Introduction!

Posted by maj0615 on October 31, 2008

Hello everyone!

My name is Maya Angela Jones and I’m from New Orleans. I attended St. Mary’s Academy for freshman year of high school and after Hurricane Katrina I moved to Dallas and graduated from a high school out there. I’m now a freshman at XU and very excited to be! My major is Mass Communication, minor is Psychology. I chose Xavier because truthfully, almost my whole family graduated from this school. I figured I’d continue our family legacy and become the next graduate of XU. As I stated earlier, I’m from New Orleans but moved to Dallas after Katrina. It really opened my eyes to the fact that I had been taking my city for granted. Dallas was extremely nice, but there’s really no place like home. I missed everything about my city. I was even missing my Saints games, and anyone who knows me knows that I bleed black and gold. That’s what was hurting me the most. I love my city!

As far as my personality goes, I’m very shy, at least in the beginning. Once you get to know me I warm up and I’m very, very outgoing. I love meeting new people and I love to have fun! I’m smart about it though. I’m not going to go out of my way to have fun knowing that it will hurt me in the long run. There’s a lot more about me a lot of people may not know. I love sports! Most guys find that surprising, I guess because most girls aren’t into those. My favorite sport is football. I’d love to become a sports journalist and sideline reporter. I’d be able to tie my favorite hobbies together: watching sports and writing.

Again, I love to meet new people and that has been one of the best parts of Xavier so far. So if you see me around campus don’t be afraid to say hi!

Introduction

Posted by Famous Washington on October 4, 2008

Hello my name is Famous Washington I live in San Antonio, Texas but i was born in New Orleans. Much of my family lives in New Orleans so my life was very much affected by hurricane Katrina. After evacuating from the hurricane alot of my family member came to stay at my house because we were the closet relatives they had to stay with. At one point there was up to 15 people living in my house at one time. This made me realize how hurricanes affect every aspect of a person’s life and the people  around them. I deceided to attend Xavier because it is a good school for pharmacy and i want to be a pharmacist. While in New Orleans I am looking forward to attending the Bayou Classic and Mardi Gras.

Posted by Ellington Taylor on September 30, 2008

My nameis Ellington Taylor. I was born and raised in New Orleans Lousiana. I never really was much of a traveler so New Orleans is the only place I consider home. My freshmen year before the storm I attend St. Augustine High School.  On August 29,2005 Hurricane Katrina forced me to relocate. A short while later I realized that I had lost everything and was now forced to make Lafayette La. my new place of residence. A year later my family made a decision that there was no place like home and it was now time to restate our lives in New Orleans. After rebuilding my home I returned for my junior and senior year. I later made the decision that i wanted to one day become a doctor. Xavier was my first choice for college because of their medical program. Throught my time here at Xavier i hope to get a quality education and meet new people.

I am apart of many diffenent communities.  One particular commuinty that I am apart of is the African Americn community. Being apart of the African American has its negative and positive points. Now this is a very critical time for not only blacks but for people of all races. For the first time in Presidential history an African American male is the has a great chance to become the president of the U.S. I think that Senator Obama serves as a huge insparation for young African American males like myself. This is a huge accomplishment for the entire race. Another community that i belong to is the xavier community. I feel that Xavier is a big family. Everyone here has respect for themselves and others. Just being apart of this community has changed my life.

Living My Life!

Posted by Shannon Taylor on September 21, 2008

Hello All,

I would like to introduce myself to the blog world! My name is Shannon Taylor and I was born in New Orleans Louisiana!! I am attending Xavier University! I choose Xavier as my college choice because as I grew up in the city I was exposed to the wonders of learning about Xavier. Ever since I was around 10 years old I would hear my family member talking about how they went to Xavier and the reasons why. I was able to listen in and hear them talk about how its a small community and how much its a blessing to have teachers who actually know you as a student and not just a number. So, as I got older and went to high school I understood more on how you want to go to a school that is small and you are treated like a individual and not a number. But with all that on the side…I truly choose Xavier because of my major. I am majoring in Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy! Xavier over the years was able to steal the title for the number one school for getting African Americans into medical school and Pharmacy school! I think that is such an amazing accomplishment to have under your belt! So that’s when Xavier beat its way to the top of my list of colleges!

…Thats enough about school..

I also ENJOY spending time with my family, boyfriend, and friends! Having fun I believe allows you to relax and achieve the best you can in school. I try to manage my time as best as I can so I can allow myself to actually enjoy the whole college experience.

I love watching movies and discussing the upcoming presidential election! Traveling for me is a must! Its so much fun to get out and learn about other places!

I have a dog named Belle! I love her! I have two sister (one being my sister-in- law) and a brother! I love my mom!

Thanks for reading!

Shannon :o)

My dad then got stationed to El Paso, Texas and we lived there from the time I was in first grade up to seventh grade. My parents then divorced and my mother and I moved back to Shreveport with family. Things that I would consider odd about me would be the fact that my favoritve drink is apple juice but i don’t like the actual fruit apples, my favorite fruit is oranges but I do not like orange juice. I do not drink purified water, and I do not eat McDonalds. I chose to come to Xavier because I heard many great things about their pharmacy program. It’s a historiclly black college and I enjoyed my visits to come and watch the women’s basketball team play. I am a member of the women’s basketball team one of nine freshman. I’m extremly excited about this year’s season. My major is pharmacy. I chose this major because i really enjoy math and chemistry. Being a pharmacy major I deal with a lot of chemistry and math. It is challenging but I feel that something worth having, doesn’t come easy. Things that I am looking foward on doing in New Orleans is basketball. Traveling to different places, and playing in the one of the best games, Dillard verus Xavier. I have heard so many good things about this game and I am super excited to experience it for myself.

Introducing Smoove

Posted by Smoove Haskins on September 19, 2008

What’s up everybody! My name is Smoove, also known as Smoove the dude. I am a freshman at Xavier university majoring in Biology for Pre-med studies. I initially wanted to have a double major in Biology and Chemistry with a minor in Physics…but Dr. Carmichael killed those dreams (just kidding!). However, I have not given up on acheiving my life long dream and I continue to educate myself each day with the aspiration of one day becoming a Cardiovascular surgeon…(so that I may hold every girls heart in my hand). Just kidding again! Some people on this blog may already know me from one place or the other but to introduce the rest of the world to me Smoove da Dude, allow me to describe myself and my interest. I am an avid athlete I love football and basketball, but basketball is my favorite sport. I was born and raised in Central California (92nd boulevard and South Central Avenue) but I have lived in Houston, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia as well. I have participated in varsity basketball (point guard #17), football (runningback/fullback #53) and track(sprints 4×1) all through high school but I always kept in mind my goals for the future and although I was involve in plenty of recreational activities I was able to maintain my academic dexterity. Along with numerous athletic acknowledgments i was blessed to also receive scholastic accolades and now that I am in the collegiate arena I plan to replicate my high school success. I am here at Xavier University of Louisiana to prepare myself for no less than success in the real world, and failure is not an option.

Introducing Myself.

Posted by Phuong Dao on September 18, 2008

Hello everybody, my name is Phuong Dao. As you can tell by my name I am totally all asian and was born and raised in New Orleans. New Orleans is the best place I can ever live in, the food, people, culture, and just everything that lives within’ this place is just great. I’ve been to a few other places, but New Orleans is home. Currently my major is pre-med, I’ve chose this major to achieve a great future but now I’m starting to question if this the right major for me. What I don’t know about New Orleans is probably how to get around the city. I know it’s a big laugh but I am direction challenged. It’s a shame, I know. What I’m interested in doing in New Orleans is maybe visit the art museum, I’ve never had the chance to see it.

I’m interested in many things from webpage designs to sports like soccer. My favorite thing to do is sleep, sleep, and sleep! Exercising is starting to become a hobby for me and I want to start yoga class soon. What you probably don’t know about me is that I am a very sarcastic person. I came to realize not very many people understand sarcasm, oh well.

I decided to come to Xavier University because I like the very moral of it. I love the fact that our classes are classrooms that we can interact with our teachers. I feel that I’m learning on a personal level and not such a distant as other university. Xavier is great in their techniques of learning and helping everybody learn. The university staff alone tries to make sure that everybody is on point on the same level all at the same time. Freshman seminar is something you won’t see many other colleges having. For Xavier to have such a class as a mandatory is showing that the college cares for their students. I love that they involve everyone. If I could choose another college to go to, I wouldn’t.

So anyways, I hope that everyone in this class would be able to get to know each other better soon. Thanks for reading my blog everyone!

With <3,

Phuong :]

Introduction

Posted by Maryam Kanj on September 18, 2008

My name is Maryam Kanj I was born in New York City on April, 28, 1990 I lived in New York for most of my childhood and  moved to Florida in 2003, I stayed there 5 years, there I  completed my high school  career and planned for my future. I decided I want to become a pharmacist, so I decided to researched this major and found a lot of interesting things on being a pharmacist from that point I fell in love with it.

My father found a great job opportunity in Louisiana, so he planned on moving there. I was going to stay in Florida because all my friends were there and I already got used to living there, but one day I when I was talking to my cousin from Louisiana he told me all about Xavier and the good reputation it has so I went online and look at the Xavier website and found what I great opportunity I might have attending Xavier and I thought that it would be a tremendous idea to move here.

The beginning to reach my future plans started when I got accepted in Xavier university of Louisiana. That’s an encouraging step for me to accomplish my goals. Becoming an excellent pharmacist, is my main goal which leads to all my other dreams because this job lets you have a good financial status so you could provide your children with everything they need for them to be successful in future.

Now I’m here in this class in Xavier trying to get the most that I can get out of this class of becoming a better reader, good listener and a great thinker, so I can achieve my priorities in life of becoming a successful pharmacist with lots of knowledge.

Im not from New Orleans but I found it really nice here i would like to learn more about it and want to see the rich culture New Orleans really has. Im looking forward to Jazz feast and Mardigra because i never really went to anything like that in Florida so i think it would be very interasting.

All About Ty’Sha

Posted by Ty'Sha Jarrow on September 17, 2008

My name is Ty’Sha Jarrow some people get it confused with different other names, so to prevent that I rather just be called Sha. Now about Sha, Some people may think I’m shy, but I’m very outgoing It just take a little time for people to see because I have to get to know folks first. I love talking and getting to know others. I love to hang out and do fun things. I’m from New Orleans and there’s alot of things fun to do out here, as long as you know what things to get into. There aren’t alot of things that I don’t like really like. I’m very easy to please. Sometimes I may get aggravated and disgusted fast, but it have to really bother me for me to get that way. I love playing ball, In high school I was active on the volleyball, basketball, softball, and track team. College is much more complicated, so my ball days are over. I don’t tell many people this but since we are all are becoming a family my only odditie would probably be that I suck my thumb. Yes, I am a college female who sucks my thumb, but I only do it around people I know. So, now that it’s public you may see me in action sitting in class when I don’t have anything else to do. My pet peeves would have to be TAPPING me. I prefer people to call me and wait for me to answer instead of constantly tapping me to get my attention, that drives me. Another pet peeve would be just making annoying noise just for no reason, that’s aggravating. As I said earlier on in my blog I’m from New Orleans. I love an enjoy everything about it the only thing I would love to more about is the history. I know some facts but just a little. Especially with getting to know out of town friends. If they ask me something I might be just as curious as they are. As I said earlier I’m a very outgoing girl, I love to meet new friendly people, hanging out, learning new things, and just “chillin”. That’s all about Sha so being stuck with you guys for an entire year, hopefully I get to know more about my fellow Xavierites.

intro

Posted by Brittany Stamps on September 16, 2008

I have been a honor student all of my life and that is one of the things I am very proud of. Outside of academics I am a very fun and outgoing person. Although I would rather keep my circle of friends at a maximum of four I am a fairly sociable person. I enjoy hanging out with my best friends, dancing, watching Law and Order marathons, spending time with my family, and just enjoying my life.

I am a Film Crew Supervisor at AMC Theaters, a bank teller at ASI  Federal Credit Union, and now a student at Xavier University. Majoring in psychology has been my plan since 2004 when I began watching the network series Law and Order. Since this series has been introduced to the world the field of psychology and the major as a whole has grown tremendously.

While in high school I managed to maintain a strong 3.8 GPA. I worked two part time jobs, one as a customer service representative at The Sports Authority, and the other at AMC  Theaters. Throughout my high school career I participated in the Student Council, Leadership, Black History Club, Christian Club, marching band, majorette team, choir, and acted as the Public Relations Director of the GPA Club. Outside of school I sponsored/choreographed a dance team and embarked on community services. By taking on so many activities I learned the value of organization, responsibility, and I believe my experiences have matured, humbled, and molded the young women I am today.

My Introduction

Posted by Edward Hill,III on September 15, 2008

My name is Edward Hill III, and I’m not a resident of New Orleans but I live very close to New Orleans. I’m from a very small place called Vacherie. Vacherie is about 45 minutes away from Xavier University. I attended St. James High in St. James, La.. I love New Orleans because of many things but the food is for the most part absolutely delicious. My hobbies are playing football, shopping, hanging out family, and talking on the phone. Before making the decision to attend Xavier, I visited the campus numerous times. When making a decision about attending college Xavier was my first choice. Xavier University has had my interest for a very long time. The opportunities, good reputation, and Xavier’s atmosphere played a big part in the interest I have for Xavier. Another influence I had about attending Xavier was my cousin, Shawn Dumas. Shawn is my role model. He is Xavier’s basketball star but always is on top of his school work even though he’s involved in a lot of things. That inspired me tremendously. At the moment my major is still not stable. I’m a finance major with a minor in accounting. When I applied to Xavier, my intended major was psychology pre-med. I’ve always enjoyed dealing with people’s emotions and problems. But I also like to deal with money and numbers. That’s why I’m still undecided. My interests are learning about the world’s biggest stock markets, reading investment books, and the history of how businesses go down because of financial problems.

Introduction

Posted by Mike Tran on September 13, 2008

Hello, Everyone! I am new at this Word Press thing that’s why it took me so long to write in it. May I introduce myself? My name is Mike Tran. I am Vietnamese and  was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. I love everything about New Orleans our culture, food, sports, languages and etc. I love my city so much sometimes it gets personal. My pet peeves are when i get stressed out by school work and I tend to quit easily but I am working on controlling it since I am in college now. I love cars, clothes, money, music, and going to places outside New Orleans. I can be a little shy at first but if I see you more often I will eventually open up to new friends.

The reason why I chose Xavier was to go into Pre-Pharm and I have noticed many pharmacy graduates coming out of Xavier University. So i knew it was the best choice! I chose to be Pharmacist because it is hard working in the beginning, but it will be worth it in the end. All my life I seen and worked with my parents in their retail store. It was hard work! Seven days, twelve hours a week throughout the whole year. My parents told me to go to school and get you a better job because you have the opportunity’s to have a better life.

Xavier so far is going pretty well. All my teachers are very unique in their own little ways but all of them have one thing in common. They reach out and gives us a hand when we need them to. The environment is like a huge park with friendly people waiting to be known.

love,

Mike Tran

My Introduction! By Kia Wilson

Posted by Kia Wilson on September 12, 2008

Ok I am like so not used to blogging but my name is Kia A. Wilson. I am a freshman this year and my current major is Chemistry Pre-Med. I was born and raised in New Orleans; I love everything about my city, culture, and life. I decided to attend Xavier University because it is well known for placing African Americans into Medical School. Xavier is just a good school all around because it is located in the best city in the entire world and has the best things to offer. I always looked at Xavier for college because I attended Xavier Prep, which was where Xavier originally came from, and it always stood out to me. My major also plays a role in why i decided to attend Xavier, hopefully I will become a doctor soon. I see myself helping children with special needs whenever I make it that far. However, my city of New Orleans is one of a kind.

There is no other place in the world like New Orleans. The things that are found in New Orleans have been here for a very long time like the French Quarters. I have a very special love for my city and the citizens who live here. Those who visit New Orleans leave with an experince like no other. Although, I would like to do more in order to give back to my city all that it has given me would be impossibe. I am proud to call New Orleans my home. Some other stuff about myself is that i played the saxophone in high school and was drum major my senior year. That experience was one that I will never forget, it was fun marching in front of the band. Pet peeves is something that doesn’t really bother me. But that’s just a little about myself!

 Hello everyone,

My name is Freddie Williams. I’m from Memphis, TN. One word that describes me would be outgoing. I love having fun while achieving my goals I have set for myself. I have two brothers and a sister. I played football in high school and I hate the fact that Xavier does not have a football program! Nevertheless, I choose Xavier University because I really want be a Doctor, Cardiovascular surgeon to be exact and as you know Xavier is number one in placing african-americans into medical school. I did not have the best grades in high school but i certainly plan on making all As here. I hope to go to medical school at Vanderbilt University because they have one of the worlds best cardiovascular departments and the experience would be great. I love spend time with my friends, and if you ever see me around campus it will probably be with these five guys: Daniel, Perry, Justin, Garret , and/or Louis! We meet over the summer in the Howard Hughes and since we been inseparable. Howard Hughes was the best way possible to start my Xavier experience.  I also love the opposite sex. Girls are what Freddie’s life revolves around. I work in the pre-med office which is very exciting, especially Dr. Carmichael-very entertaining man! But besides all of this I hope these next four years at Xavier will prove to be the best years of my life, and I’m sure they will. Go Obama!

Posted by Brittany Tripp on September 11, 2008

Well what’s there to know about me? Well to start off, Im Brittany Tripp. I was born in Greensboro Ga, on April 30 1990. I just moved here from Buford Georgia, about 30 miles outside of Atlanta.I graduated from North Gwinnett High School last may so  obviously i am a freshman at Xavier University. Im majoring in Chemistry Pre- Pharmacy. But about me, Im easy to get along with, I love people, im very easygoing, outgoing, im really chill and laid back. I am currently staying at my grandparents home in marrero. My family on my moms side lives here so I’m already familiar with the city of New orleans. So far I love living here, the people here are great and really friendly. Ive always loved New Orleans and I still do. So far my experience at Xavier has been a good one. I’ve met quite a few friends already, my proffesors are pretty nice and easy to talk to, so everything is going great right now.

Some of my pet peeaves would include, lying, people being really immature, and smacking on food…i hate that. But yea, i think you can never go wrong with being honest…but thats a different story.

Ok, so one of the reasons why I picked Xavier, is because my aunt, uncle and cousin graduated from here, so I already knew that this was a great school, and since Im majoring in Pharmacy I knew this would be a great opportunity for me, so I applied and of course got accepted. I hate the fact that im going to be in school for six years but it pays off in the end. But I guess thats about it… Im looking forward to meeting everyone and I hope to see you guys around 🙂

I’m a freshman like many of you. I have lived in New Orleans all my life and love my city. I love our culture, traditions, foods, language, and the people. Everyone is like family here. So, I would like to say welcome to the New Orleans family to those who aren’t from here. You will love New Orleans. It has a lot for you to experience and do. Even though we are in rough times right now, you will never get tired of being in the city. My intended major is Chemistry (Pre-Pharmacy). I wanted to come to XAVIER because of my major. It was a plus when I heard that it has the number one college of Pharmacy. I’ve visited Xavier many times so I’m used to the campus. Xavier wasn’t my first choice, but it was definitely on my list. I just love the atmosphere that Xavier offers. Xavier is not your typical college where it sits off in an area by itself. Instead Xavier sits in the heart of the city and community. So I’m very proud to be attending such a prestigious school. I wanted to become a pharmacist because I love to help others out. I care for our elderly/sick and think health is very important. So many people in my family and in the world are suffering because of illnesses. I love to see smiles on my elder’s faces when I’m doing something good for their cause. It makes me want to work harder and develop more into my career. Some pet peeves I have are liars and people who try to used you. I’m a very nice person but can’t tolerate distrustful friends and people who use you. I’m interested in doing a lot of things, especially travel later on in my life. Right now, I want to get more acquainted with my city and learn more about our culture and traditions than I already know. I am shy when I first me people but after awhile become more comfortable around them. I have being working on my social skills for awhile now and trying my best not to let my nerves over power me. I’m out-going and optimistic. No one tells me “I can’t” because I will do.  I have a weird outlook for exotic/unique things and places. Thanks for listening to Krissy!!!

A Little about Bri

Posted by Bri Harper on September 9, 2008

My name is Brittany but everybody calls me Bri for short. I am from Chicago, Illinois where I live with my younger sister, mother and stepfather. I have an older sister but she has her own condo in Stickney, Illinois. I love Chicago despite its snowy cold winters and occasional hot summers. I went to a relatively small high school where everybody knew each other and their business! My high school is considered to be a “nerdy” school, whatever that means. Every time I would tell someone what school I went to they would reply, “Oh you must be smart.” I was the first person in my entire family who traveled so far away to go to college. I chose to attend Xavier because of their unique pharmacy program. I chose to go into pharmacy because my mother is in the medical field and it has always interested me.

I feel like I was very fortunate because I came to Xavier with four of my really good friends from high school, one of which is my roommate. My biggest pet peeve in the entire world is when someone’s nose is running and instead of blowing their nose they just sit there and sniff and sniff and sniff some more. I know I may sound a little crazy but its just one of those things that annoys me to no end. But enough about that, I consider myself to be a very friendly and an overall good person who loves to laugh and have a good time once you get to really get to know me. While in New Orleans I look forward to getting to know my cousins who live here that I haven’t had a chance to communicate a lot with over the years.

HOWDY!!!

Posted by tammar williams on September 9, 2008

Hey everyone! my name is Tammar Williams and I am here in New Orleans from Little Rock, Arkansas. It’s also known as the Natural State if anybody cares. I know that when a lot of people hear Arkansas they either think of the country, like cows and stuff, or they may think of Bill Clinton. Well, I would have to say that both of those initial thoughts would be correct. The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville mascot is a razorback. It’s basically a wild hog, and if you go up there you’ll probably hear someone calling the hogs at least 15 times (especially during football season). There are a lot of farms, forests, lakes, and natural things like that in Arkansas. Hence the name “the natural state”. It’s a really cool place though. If you like the outdoors, or just want to try something different I would recommened that you visit Arkansas at least once. I am an ok person I guess. I turned 18 on the 8th of February(AQUARIUS BABY!!). I’m just being me because…that’s who I want to be. I like to meet people, so I guess if you know what I look like, say howdy. People tell me that I am a really good listener, so I guess if anybody needs somebody to talk to or to listen to them, I won’t mind.

About my pet peeves… I would like for people to be honest with others and themselves. I just think that life would be easier that way. I don’t cuss (or curse, what ever you want to call it), and generally I don’t like a lot of cussing around me, but I can’t really control that so i just sit there, I guess. The only other thing I can think of is that I like for people to be courteous and polite. Like if you see somebody struggling with something give them a helping hand (think of the song “lean on me”), and if they don’t want help then hey at least you offered.

Ok now for the hobbies. I like to do a lot of stuff. I like to sleep, eat, I like to excercise, I like to read, I like hanging out with family and friends. Back in the day when I was a young’en in high school I participated in like a gazzillion organizations. I played sports: volleyball, I hooped, participated in track (but of course from eating, sleeping, working, and partying all summer long I am a bit out of practice). My favorite colors are orange and green ( not necessarily together), but I still like all the colors of the rainbow and beyond. I just really like colorful things; they are hypnotic to me haha.

I’m just going to say this- Xavior was NOT my first choice in universities. In fact, I didnt even know that it was an HBCU until like January of this year. I wasn’t going to apply and i wouldn’t have applied if my daddy hadn’t have told me to try it out. I wanted to go to Spelman, and my daddy said that if I tried Xavier out for the first semester then he would get me a new car, so here I am. The funny thing is that i was planning to transfer at the end of this semester, but I love this place so much now that I want to stay through the whole sha-bang (til graduation); my parents on the other hand want me to transfer, so i guess we switched outlooks on everything.

I guess I’m done now… OH if you ever here somebody yelling WOOO PIG SOUIEEEE!!!! Its probably me calling the hogs.

k, bye

Christina’s Introduction

Posted by Christina Houston on September 9, 2008

Hello Everyone!!!

As you can see, my name is Christina Houston and I turned eighteen years old yesterday, September 8, 2008.  Yes, I am a Virgo! I’m usually the youngest person in my class but upon arriving at Xavier, I have found numerous people who are younger than me, and that makes me happy!!  My favorite colors are blue and green.

I am a very cool, laid back person, but people tend to think I am mean.  However, I’m actually one of the most hilarious people you could ever meet.  Most of the time, I walk around looking mad at the world, but that’s not the case at all.  I’m usually in deep thought.  One of my pet peeves is lying.  It takes so much more effort to lie than to just tell the truth.  A common cliché is the truth shall set you free, and I’m an advocate of this saying.  I have so much respect for those who are honest about the things they do.

For the first thirteen years of my life, I lived in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia.  I then spent next four years in a small town called Estill, South Carolina with my mother, father, and little brother.  Now, I am in New Orleans. As you can tell, South Carolina is not exactly close to New Orleans, so you are probably wondering how I ended up here.  Honestly, until about a year ago, I did not even know of Xavier and did not imagine that I would obtain my bachelor’s degree from here.  I learned of it through a counselor in a summer program that I attended during the summer after my junior year. After learning about Xavier’s excellent pre-med program, I decided to visit in November.  Once I visited the campus, I fell in love!!  I loved the family environment, and though I’m far from home, I have a home away from home here on campus!

My major is currently biology pre-med. I love Xavier University and especially those I have met!!  I look forward to experiencing the New Orleans culture and food! I love great food!

Well, this is enough about me for now!!  Thanks for taking the time out to read my blog!!

Posted by Danielle Kennebrew on September 9, 2008

Hello everyone out there my name is Danielle Kennebrew, I am from the Sunshine State which is Florida Miami to be exact. If you have not visited Miami you need to. There are beautiful beaches, houses, and lots do, its kind of hard to become bored in such a city. I have an older sister, we are six years apart and we have the same birthday how ironic is that. She also attended a Historically Black College(Hampton University) . To be perfectly honest I really don’t have any pet peeves just respect yourself and others I would have to say. I am on the Women’s Basketball Team (Gold Nuggets) at Xavier my position is small forward/power forward. I enjoy writing poetry, reading interesting books, listening to just about all types of genes of music, spending time with family and playing basketball. I choose to attend Xavier University of Louisiana because of the high quality spiritual, academic, and athletic standards this institution is known to have and uphold. My major is Biology Pre-Med, in the future years to come I plan to attend Medical School and become a Pediatrician I may specialize in a certain area of Pediatrics. I have always enjoyed the sciences and helping people especially young children so these two qualities of mine go hand and hand. Introduction

Posted by Mychelle Williams on September 9, 2008

Hi my name is Mychelle Williams and I am a Pisces. I am from both California and Philadelphia. My favorite colors are green and turquoise. my favorite number is 15 because my birthday is march the 15. Everyday at 315 I sing happy birthday to myself and get excited when i see the numbers 3 1 and  5 in any arrangement. A random fact that added intensity to my love for 315 is that one year University of Alabama won 315 consecutive games and i saw a man with a college ring with a giant 315 to represent it. I found that out when we had to evacuate. I don’t like cold weather but ironically my middle name is Wynter. A cool fact about my family is that all of my Dad’s daughters have the initials MWW.
Xavier was attractive to me for numerous reasons one being their tremendous record of students accepted into medicals. My mentor and big sister graduated from Xavier and is now a doctor. She had nothing but praises about Xavier and all that it has to offer. Another thing is that Xavier in a HBCU and I always wanted to be apart of the historically black college experience. Honestly besides that I knew nothing else about the school. When I came down here for the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honors program this summer I was made aware that this school had no football team or band; that was discouraging for me because that was apart of my ” HBCU dream”. But, I feel that everything happens for a reason and if it wasn’t meant for me to be a student here I wouldn’t be.
I earned an A in General Chemistry 1010 and made many friends during the course of the summer. I learned a lot about myself this summer, and one of the things was that I enjoy being an individual because that is what sets me apart from the other people. People wanted me to conform but I’m a rebel and refused to be put into a category or group.
weird about me or things that i love about my self: I don’t like girlie girl things but I am not a “tom boy”, I get around 4 mosquito bites a day, I am 4’11 and pigeoned toed( not to be confused with being “bow legged”, my ring size is 4 and i can never find rings in stores.

My Introduction

Posted by Bechi Okwumabua on September 8, 2008

Well… my name is Ebubechi Okwumabua. I’m from Memphis, TN. I decided to come to Xavier for numerous reasons. First and foremost, Xavier’s reputation played the biggest role in my decision. My parents encouraged me to apply here because of my medical interests, and also because Xavier is a prestigious historically black university. With intentions of becoming a plastic surgeon, I agreed with their recommendations and made Xavier my first-choice university. Secondly, I was presented with the opportunity to play basketball. I’ve always had an athletic ability, resulting in my success in high school sports. I ran track, played basketball, and soccer for the White Station Lady Spartans. I was one of the main players on my soccer team at my school. It was originally my best sport, but after I tore my acl last year, I had to give up soccer. Also, as a Tennessee state finalist in the 300 hurdles and triple jump, track, although it was my second option for college sports, had to be put aside due to my injury. Considering the circumstances, basketball, my worst of my best three sports, became my only option to play in college. The Gold Nugget’s coach also previously showed an interest in me following my surgery, so i was encouraged to attend Xavier because they were really the only school still willing to give me a chance playing ball after the incident. These ar the top two reasons that i am now here. Lastly, New Orleans is a city of magic and mystery. I’ve heard so much about the food and festivities that define New Orleans culture. This place is different, not only because of the people and those funny-sounding accents. The smell in the air and the structural build of New Orleans assures any being of elsewhere that this place is one like no other. I wanted to experience the culture because it is by far different from Memphis, TN, which I’ve had enough of after eighteen years. I’m looking forward to indulging in this experience of living in New Orleans for the next four years.

Introductions

Posted by Morgan Weber on September 8, 2008

Hello everyone, my name is Morgan Elizabeth Weber.  I do find it a little weird to be introducing myself over the Internet, but I will do my best.

I am eighteen years old who is about 5’10, and though I was born in Houston, Texas, I lived in the surrounding New Orleans area for the past fourteen years with my mother, father, and older brother.  My life here has been very enriching, and I have also enjoyed the diversity that New Orleans has to offer. From the food to the people, New Orleans is one of a kind.  I especially love the beignets and the jambalaya.  The people are also completely unique because of the way they dance, sing, speak, and act.  However, I would like to learn more about the history and architecture of the city, since I have only tasted a little of it from the few museums I have gone to.

Additionally, I have also grown as a person who has goals likes and dislikes.  One of my goals is to become more of a woman of God, and another goal of mine is to find a career that I am passionate about and allows me to support myself and, if their is one in my future, a family.  My likes include learning how to become a better person and modifying that perception if need be, reading books, watching T.V., dancing, surfing the Internet and doing anything that deals with art.  To expand on the dancing part, I have been dancing for twelve years, been on my high school dance team for 4 years,  was captain my senior year, and earned my teaching license for dance this past year.  So, it is safe to say that I really like dancing.  My dislikes include those who refrain from giving others a chance, those who pressure people or make fun of them and those who interupt me while I am talking.  Some others are sicknesses and loud noises.

The reason why I came to Xavier as chemistry premedical student is to get an education that better prepares myself in becoming a pediatrician, especially after I had heard of Xavier’s reputation with getting African-American students into medical school.  Secondly, it was close to home and to the people I knew.

To tell you a little bit more about myself, my oddities, which also fall under what people may not know about me, are: I sneeze at least ten times a day, I hiccup every day at random and the only conclusion I know for why is because I do not breathe well,  and the last three toes on my left foot are about the same height.

Well, that about sums up me and I am signing off for now.

Intro

Posted by Hung Le on September 8, 2008

Hello everybody, my name is Hung Le, I just recently moved from Miami, fl, where I went to school at St. Thomas Aquinas High. As everybody knows Florida is known for their beaches, so on a typical day you can find me snorkeling, wakeboarding or fishing. I would definitely characterize myself as being adventurous; I’m always willing to try new and exciting things. One of the reasons I choose to go to Xavier was just to see my family more often. I have a sister who goes to University of Louisiana in Lafayette, which I regularly visit. I always felt that, when you’re with family it’s a certain comfort level that you feel.

I am majoring in accounting because it has a wide range of career options, not only that but I commonly felt great managing money. I truly believe in whatever profession you choose to pursue, you first have to learn how to manage your finances. New Orleans is such a great city; I look forward to meeting new friends and experiencing the college life. The only thing that I’m not going to get used to is hurricanes. I am a believer in whatever doesn’t kills you makes you stronger. I just hope Hurricane Ike doesn’t make contact with Louisiana.

introduction?

Posted by Hai Tran on September 8, 2008

So, I guess I can start out by introducing myself. I’m Hai Tran from New Orleans and I’m a pre-med biology major. Before Xavier, I went to Benjamin Franklin High School and I’m happy to be out because now I actually have free time from not having homework until midnight! I was able to make Varsity on the soccer team freshman year, but I bailed out because of too much home work and practice. In my senior year I decided to play football, where I got yelled at by the coaches more than appraised because I didn’t come out freshman year because I was pretty good for a “rookie” on a football team[Although I have played football outside of school].

What annoys me the most is when people from here find out that I go to Ben Franklin and they see me as some genius. I mean really its flattering, but it gets annoying a lot. Another thing is I hate sharing my grades and standardized tests because they go you’re so smart and stuff like that, to me seriously I just work really hard, I’m not a genius, nor do I try to be. I have a mentality along with a friend of mine, its “Work hard and play harder”. The way it works is if we work hard now, make a pathway for our future and success, we can “play” harder when we’re successful and wealthy and have at least something to fall back on.

I’ve always wanted to become a doctor, ever since I was a kid, I had an inspiration. Although he passed away, I swore to myself I’d always become someone like him, if not better. Being a pre-med Biology student at Xavier, it gives me a GREAT opportunity to succeed and fulfill my dreams. The reason I chose Xavier was because of its renowned reputation in helping many students get into med-school and Tulane costed a lot more than you’d think.

One thing about being from New Orleans is that, you will never get sick of home. Although Katrina tore us apart a few years ago, everywhere I went be it Albequerque, New Mexico or even San Diego. No place was close to home as New Orleans is. The city is one thing, but the people that make up the city is the major thing. The smiling faces you see when you drive down the street, the many faces you see during Mardi Gras, and especially the food…you can’t get any better than here. You got to admit, we KNOW how to eat.

Its random, but there is one thing you have to know about me is that I am very arrogant and cocky. Although I may not show it at first, the person closest to me points this out all the time. I mean everyone’s cocky at times, but I’m beyond normal…its frustrating because you can’t change instantly, but I try hard. Thats another thing, I rarely ever give up these days, I keep going and going and I won’t give up.

I guess i wrote enough? Back to studying for chemistry.

Intro to Jamaan Kenner aka The G.O.A.T

Posted by Jamaan Kenner on September 8, 2008

Hello all! My name is Jamaan Kenner.  Im from LaPlace, La but currently reside in Baton Rouge, La.  I’ve moved several times in my life and I’ve never been at one school for longer than three years.  I began my high school career at Jesuit High School, which is maybe two minutes from Xavier’s campus.  There I played basketball and I started on the Varsity team as a freshman.  During my sophomore year, Hurricane Katrina hit and I moved to a school that was closer to my home, East Saint John High in Reserve, La.  I also played basketball there and also ran track as a high jumper.  I graduated fourth in my class with a 3.84 GPA.

What’s there to know about me? I may look mean, but I’m actually a nice individual if you get to know me.  I am probably one of the goofiest people you will ever meet.  I like to joke and laugh as often as I can.  I go by the alias “The G.O.A.T”, which is an acronymn for Greatest of All Time.  I don’t believe that I’m cocky or full of myself, I’m just confident in my basketball abilities. So, if you see me and you can’t remember my real name, you can call me “The G.O.A.T”.  If i had to sum myself up in one sentence, it would be: I’m a tall, dark, and handsome member of the Xavier Gold Rush basketball team that loves to make people laugh!

Why did I choose Xavier? I chose it because of its tradition as a historical black college and because of its great repuation for sending blacks to medical school.  I also chose XU because I was offered a full basketball scholarship.

That’s about all I could think of for now, but if you want to know more, you can add a comment to this or look me up on Facebook. Be cool bloggers!

I’m just me =)

Posted by Corinne Williams on September 8, 2008

Hi everyone!

My name is Corinne Williams and I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. I’m the baby of three kids and now I’m trying to be independent for the first time in my life! I can’t lie it’s only been three weeks and it is hard to get used to, but I am pulling through. The best thing about college is that it’ll challenge me to be something great! I’m a very motivated person and I always push myself especially with my education. Since I could remember I have always taken pride in my school work. I have a love for the sciences, which is why I chose Chemistry/Pre-Pharmacy as a major. I knew I wanted to go into the medical field so by combining my love for science and healthcare into one is the perfect career for me.

While a senior in high school, I debated on what would be the right university for me. When I was younger, I knew I wanted to go to a HBCU because they embrace their students a lot more versus a big Ivy League school. I applied to many schools, but for some reason Xavier stuck out to me. Plus, the scholarship they gave helped also =). But it’s not only about the money; it’s about the gut feeling I had to come here. The culture in New Orleans is like no other, the music, the food, just the way of life out here is way different than what I am used to in Chicago. I wanted to see a different way of life and break out the normal city life I was used to and New Orleans could give me a different perspective.

There’s no way to describe me in words. I’m just Corinne! I can say that I am a very passionate person and I love life. I’m probably one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and I always try my best to smile. All I can say is that one day I’ll be somebody important in my community, maybe I’ll be your pharmacist. Who knows?

MY INTRO

Posted by Angelica Wilson on September 8, 2008

Hi everyone, My name is Angelica Jessica Wilson, but everyone calls me Jelly.  Iam the only child, so yea I’m spoiled (don’t be jealous).  I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana.  I attented Warren Easton High School my freshman year until Katrina came and messed that up.  I was relocated to South Bend, Indiana and I went to Washington High, three months later we came back home and moved on the westbank. My home in the 9th ward was completely destroyed.  I then went to Helen Cox High School where I graduated Cum Laude with an 3.5 GPA.

Now Iam here at Xavier University, where I thought I would always be.  In fact Xavier was the only University I applied for.  Luckily they accepted me huh?  I didn’t want to go far anyway because its just me and my mother and I don’t want to leave her just yet.  Also New Orleans is just home for me, when I so out of town somewhere i usually get home sick. I don’t know why I guess this is where I want to be.  Enough about that,  but anyway Iam a chemistry pre-pharmacy major and I plan on making big bucks in the near future. One odd thing about me is that I like to be alone, but for me its a good thing because it keeps me out of trouble. But any who it was good while it lasted…I’ll talk to you all next time. See u soon!

INTRO TO ERIN G.!!

Posted by Erin Gardner on September 8, 2008

Hello all!!  My name is Erin Sian Gardner; I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana.  I attended Eleanor McMain Secondary School my freshmen year of high school.  However in 2005, my family and I relocated to Tallahassee, Florida.  While in Tallahassee, I attended Chiles High School and managed to complete my sophomore year before we moved again (this time to another area in Tallahssee).  It was then that my parents found stability; I enrolled into Leon High School, where I completed my junior and senior years. Finally being able to focus on my education, I maintained a 4.3 weighted GPA and graduated Cum Laude in May 2008. With no time to waste, I quickly moved back home to New Orleans in July and I am now a Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy major with possible intentions of transferring to a college in Florida during my junior year.

I made the decision to pursue a career as a retail pharmacist in second grade.  Shortly after entering Marian Central Catholic Middle School, I decided that I would begin the pursuit of that goal at Xavier University of Louisiana.  I applied to several colleges during my senior year of high school and was elated to have received acceptance and a partial scholarship from Xavier before any other universities replied.  However, although I have always wanted to be a Xavierite, certain financial circumstances will allow the expenses of higher education to be drastically reduced if I return to a Florida university.  Nevertheless, I am excited to be a member of the Xavier community and I am looking forward to my next two years .  I hope to meet new people and make new connections that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Enough about me…

Posted by Joi Martin on September 8, 2008

Greetings fellow Xavierites and bloggers,

I am Joi Martin, Biology pre-med and future pediatrician, coming to Xavier to continue pursuing my goals.  Along time ago I decided to devote my life to blessing others, even outside my career.  Although I am originally from the New Orleans metro area, I am as new to Xavier as everyone else in my class.  The world around us is constantly changing but I embrace the challenge of learning all there is to know.  The best aspect of the Xavier community is its diversity; drawing students from around the country (and maybe the world) together as one family.  My decision to come to Xavier is based upon more than just its reputation…experience was my main influence.

What can I say about me?  Well…I am a rather timid soul who loves to smile, laugh, read, write in my journal, and chill with my friends. Not much of a talker, I prefer to listen to others and express myself nonverbally. I grew up in a small town, stayed inside most of the time, and learned to enjoy the simple things in life. Fancy name brands do not impress me because I consider myself to be very frugal.  Latest fashion, technology, cars, music, or any fads are not my concern.  I am pretty much laid back and go wherever life takes me.  To take a break from reality, I love to draw, write poetry, play the piano, or just play music while I sit and think. I am very intelligent, goofy at times, soft-hearted, sweet, friendly, and giving.  Unlike many girls, I do not care for activities such as shopping, getting my hair and nails done, or dressing in cute clothes.  I am not afraid to get dirty, enjoy sports, feel comfortable in baggy clothing, and absolutely love anything gory.

Enough about me…I would rather hear about you! Looking forward to this exciting journey we will share!

Hey all the bloggers out there, my name is Nathaniel Cox, im a freshman at Xavier University and i am the son of Daniel and Veronica Cox. I have three brothers, two older, one youger, and lucky for me in stuck in the middle of them. I Played football basketball and did track.  LEts see something weird about me. Im not really a soda fan or an ice cream fan at all. The only soda I really drink is Fanta Orange =)) and the only time I eat ice cream is when me and the moms goes to Sams and we usually get a berry sundae. Im usually always laughing or smiling I dont know why its just a habit. PEt peeves…Uhmm , I dont really care too much for people who act like someone they arent just to impress someone or to fit in with a certain group. I think people should just be theirselves and not worry what other people think of them. Also, people who lie, we arent kids anymore just be real. Something about me that no one would know..I love watching movies. I could just sit down in front of the tv and watch movies all day as long as I have some snacks and have a bathroom break every now and then. =P I dont really have enemies or have any beef with anyone so im easy to get along with. I jam slow jams 24/7, well maybe not that much but if im listening to something more than likely its a slow song, just that type of guy i guess. For collge I never really thought of attending Xavier period but every other school in New Orleans. My cousin and I always wanted to attend the same college so we applied to all of the same school. First it was a school in Calli, then a school in NOrthern Louisiana and finally UNO. Well I told my mom about UNO and she asked why not XAvier if I want to attend college in New Orleans. Well of course my cousin didnt really like the idea but he got my other cousin to go to UNO with him and im stuck at Xavier. Not saying its a bad thing but just wanted to go to the same school with my cousins. My major is pre med biology, my goal is becoming a pediatrician. I always had a thing for medicine ever since I was a kid. IF anyone has ever played the Sims the only job I would ever take is the medical feild choice.  I like kids so i figure if I help them out and they make me smile then ill have the best job I could ever ask for. Im not from New Orleans but just three hours away from a little small town called Lake Charles. Im looking forward to the New Orleans life, the food which is the best in the world might I add, MArdi Gras which Im looking forward too and parties and clubs. =))

It’s is only the fact if you know what i say you know nothing about my life at all.

Hi Guys!:-)

Posted by Jacinda Whitley on September 6, 2008

Hi Everyone!!

My name is Jacinda (like cindarella with a “ja” minus the ella.:-)haha) Marie Whitley (as in Whitley from a Different World) and i reside in Houston,Texas. Im originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, where I was raised with my two older brothers. I moved to Texas when I was 10 years old and fell in love with the city life:-)

I love Louisiana with a passion. The culture and traditions that this state upholds is truly remarkable to me.  New Orleans is a wonderful get away to let your worries go and enjoy life. My favorite part of this culture is the extremely welcoming spirit you feel in the city. With every city comes some bad people, but the hospitality here is relieving. Since I’ve been here since the summer and I’ve lived here in the state, my favorite traditon is the “second line dancing.” I never knew dancing in the street could be so fun! The parades, food and music speaks for itself. I am already in love with the city. But I can neveer forget home…

I attended Hightower High School’s Medical Science Academy, where I was an intern for 2 years, in Houston Texas. In internship I went to the hospital half of the school day and was able to do everything, well almost everything the nurses could do (i.e. glucose test, vital signs, bed changes, baths). It was the summer of my junior year that I decided I wanted to attented Xavier University of Louisiana where I would work towards medical school.

I am a  very affectionate person who is willing to help the world if I could. But I know that’s not possible, so I decided to start with one baby at a time. If I make sure healthy babies come into this world, who knows what they will become and how they could change the world. This is why I’m inspiring to be a Neonatologist.

In my spare time I LOVE to spend time with my family (I love you mama!), listening to music, watching movies and anything thats fun pretty much! I listen to all types of music. I’m real diverse. I also love to work out and children. I hate wasteing time and yellow skittles.(haha:-)). For the most part I believe that life is too short too let the little things hold you back from anything you are trying to do in life. I know that no matter what I’m going through, it could always be worst…

On that note, I’ll talk about the most important person in my life. My whole reason for being where I am today. Jesus Christ himself. I’ve learned that the only way I can make is by trusting in him and having faith. I go to church, read my bible, pray and try to live a good Christian life. But even though I fall short at times, I know he still loves me:-)

As I close I want you guys to know one special thing about me………listening???……..I LOVE SHOES AND JEWELERY!! So if there’s anything that ses me apart from the rest (besides my killer smile and my clown phobia.haha:-)) it’s my shoe and jewelery collection. That’s all folks. Love Ya!!
