Classes – The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Think about your favorite class and your least favorite class. Without naming which classes they are, tell us why you like and dislike each respectively. Is it the teacher, the work, the material, the time, your attitude, your attendance, the requirements, something else? What about each makes it good or bad? ***What could you have done to make your most disliked class better?*** What can you do in future classes that, despite the problems you may have with the class, will make it better for you to be successful in that class?

Classes

Posted by tammar williams on November 9, 2008

It’s kind of hard to determine which of my classes is my one favorite and which is my one least favorite. As of now I have a few classes that I can’t really stand and only one class that I actually like to attend. This is probably because I haven’t been much of a school kid anyway, meaning I never really liked going to school when I was younger. It’s kind of weird because I absolutely love to learn, but i just didn’t like sitting still in a classroom for nine hours of my day.

As I said previously, I have a few classes that I don’t like, but since ther prompt says one class I will just pick one. I would just tell everybody straight up which classes I don’t like, but the prompt says I can’t name which classes they are. One of the classes that I don’t like to go to is this dumb class that I have to go to on three times a week. I didn’t even want to take that class but the woman that did my schedule said it was the only class available that was required. I actually thought that i would like this class but I wrong. One reason why I don’t like this class is because no matter how many notes I take and how many times I study the book, the information just won’t stick in my mind. It just doesn’t make anny sense to me; it doesn’t help that when I ask the teacher to explain a topic a little more to help me understand and he just confuses the mess out of me even more. It would probably be a good thing to meet every other day but since I can’t process the information in my head, it feels like painless torture. The time is ok. I don’t really complain too much about the times of my classes because frankly, I’m not sure what time is the best time for me to learn. Nothing major is really required of the class but your attendance and your attention, and I’ve got that on lock because I try to go to every class and I always take notes and pay attention. Actually, I think thats the only thing that is keeping me from failing that class. As for the tests, I don’t do so well on those even though I study my but off for them. They don’t have a tutoring center for it, so that sucks. I just don’t know what to do about my situation, but try hard and pray that it works out. I just think that this class would have been a lot better if I understood the subject to even a minute extent.

This part of the blog is going to be easy. My favorite class right now is a class that I have to go to two times a week. I like it because it’s so easy for me to understand what’s going on, but only after I’ve been challenged first. A lot of people say that the only thing to the class is memorization, but I beg to differ. I think that this class takes a lot of understanding to pass and remember throughout one’s lifetime. This is because you learn about different systems that work together to be, how they work together to be efficient, how they came about, and how we can use these studies to improve our lives. I like this class basically because it challenges me, it stimulates my mind and gives me a better understanding of life.

I have come to the conclusion that if I want to prevent myself from struggling in a class in the future, I should: pick my classes carefully, do a bit of “pre-studying” on the subject, and if possible meet with the teacher before-hand and find out what the teacher will expect out of me for the class.

Classes

Posted by Bechi Okwumabua on November 9, 2008

I am taking fourteen hours. I think that is like… seven classes. My favorite class out of these seven is english with Dr. Dorris. Even though I am  biology pre-med major, biology is not my favorite subject. I believe it is because of my teachers. I love science, biology in particular. And I do like my biology teacher, but the way that my english teacher discusses the stories that we read every week and the way that he engages with the class every day is just more interesting than the way my biology teacher teaches. I had a biology teacher in high school. She was very animated and excited. I usually was able to stay up in her class unless I was just too tired. In my biology class now, I think I sleep more than I pay attention. It’s the teaching style. It just bores me out of my mind. I just manage to study the information outside of class and that has kept me in good standing grade-wise in that class. But my english class is interesting because we hve a discussion everyday. We talk to each other and comment on what we get out of the storied read. And my english teacher is funny too. He has a vibrant personality. Some people don’t like him, but I don’t mind him. And I look forwrd to going to his class everyday, escpecially when I like the story read.

The class that I am the least fond of is my histroy class. I’m not  history person. I never was entirely interested in history. That is not good… Yes I know, because my histroy is the seed to my future. But I just have not been able to get into it. Black history nd Jewish histroy are the only two areas that I seem to pay attention to when the focus is on one of the two. European history, which happens to be the majority of what teachers want to talk about when speaking of America, is just boring to me. And I get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again… But that is history, because history repeats itself. Therefore, it stands as my least favorite class.

Class- The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Posted by NeNe Lewis on November 9, 2008

Out of all my classes I really one of them. I really like this class because it is not boring, its fun while we learn, and its not a waste of my time. The class is not boring because my teacher doesn’t bore me with the explantions she gives. My teacher in this class can relate to us which makes us feel comfortable in that class. She also talks to us about different stuff that goes on in not only the world and at Xavier but what goes on in our lives. This class in particular is fun while we learn because she explains the work in ways we understand. The is also a laid back type atmosphere which makes it easy to pay attention. I feel that the class is not a waste of time because I actually learn something. I have more than one class I really dislike. these classes are boring and I feel that if when I go to the class and I don’t learn in them. I feel why should I go to these classes. I do all my work in these classes but my not learing anything. My disliking of these classes is not the work, the time, my attitude, my attendance, nor the material. I always stay postive no matter what the problem is. These classes are boring and they puts me to sleep. I try my hardest not to fall a sleep so sometimes I step out the class for a minute or two. I’m not sure if it’s the teacher or just me not intersted in the class. For my most disliked classs i really don’t think i can do anything to make it better, I just have to stick with it until the semterster is over.

Classes

Posted by Marshall Collins on November 6, 2008

After thinking about my classes, I find that I do particularly well in this one class that is not my major because I find that I am very interested in the material. I find that I am always on time to class unless I have an unexpected emergency, and I do not fall asleep in the class. The material keeps me thinking so I do not get bored therefore I find that I stay on top of the work. The teacher is good and keeps a high energy in the class. She makes sure that the class gets the material and makes herself readily available in the event that we have any questions. On the other hand, there is this class which I highly dislike. Even though the teacher has good intentions on how to go about teaching us, I still dislike the class. In the class I find that from time to time it is extremely hard to stay awake and when I do stay awake i find that I zone out and think about anything and everything that is not about the class. The problem I have with this class is that I am not interested at all with the material but I am only in the class because it is a requirement for my major. But I am making this class better is that I am engaging in the conversations that the teacher starts in the class. I find that I will only get out of the class what I put in so I am starting and will continue to put it.

MY CLASSES!!!!

Posted by Kia Wilson on November 4, 2008

I feel that some of my classes conflict with time and just who is teaching that class. On my Monday, Wednesday, and Friday classes things are just fine. I only have two classes and they are not that difficult, all except one that is but its hard to understand just what goes on in that class. Althought I had to drop a class because of personal reasons my classes have not got any easier or any harder. However I do feel comfortable with the class and teachers that I have so far. On Tuesdays and Thursdays are my longest days, sometimes I just want to go to school and then leave but not on those two days.

As I already said I don’t have that much of a problem with my classes it just all depends on if I am having a good day or a bad one. Sometimes I don’t feel like going to certain classes just because I know that theres not much to do or that the teacher will talk a hole in my head. But for the future I will know more about some teachers to take and those who will give me a hard time. I can’t really complain about the amount of work being given because I have to learn some how. I would just appreciate it if I was given some days where I didn’t have to do so much work and just have time to study and look over the information. I think that because I have such good classes this semester my attitude is always ready for something new and I hope that my teachers see that in me as a student.

Classes

Posted by Faith Hicks on November 3, 2008

My first class of the day, I enjoy. We hardly ever learn what we are supposed in that assigned class. We always go off topic and talk about real world issues. My teacher is fairly young, so he understands our point of view when we have class discussions.  We do learn in the class, don’t get me wrong, if you were to compare our work you will see how we all have improved on it in many ways.  I also like it because we work hard on papers but during discussion we joke a around.  For example: Our first paper we had to do a free write so we could express our ideas with words, sounds, and poetic devices.  I think the things that add to my enjoyment of the class is that the class is in the morning and it wakes me up and helps me to have a good day.  The requirements are also really easy, well not difficult for me, which adds  even more ease toward my attitude about the class. I sometimws have my doubts about the class but overall it’s my favorite.

My least favorite class is dreadful.  The teacher spends every class speaking in tongues, and we rarely understand what he is saying.  Sometimes he contradicts what he says because at times he gets his own words twisted.  Another thing is that he has an attitude where he doesn’t care.  That effects my attitude because I am not fond about people who do not care about my eduacation especially when thier my teacher.  Another thing is that he doesn’t really teach, he puts things on the board and makes us take notes and then take quizzes and tests as if he has actually taught us the material.  Another thing is that he calls people out all the time, to basically ridicule them beacuse he knows they do not know the answer.  There’s not a specific way to make this class better for me, I guess I can suck it up and take his attitude and just work for the grade the hardest way I can.

In the future, as far as my classes go, I will take advantage of my opportunities whether or not its a good or bad situation i will take advantage of the situation and do my best and work my hardest.

classes…

Posted by Rachael Flores on November 3, 2008

I would have to say that my favorite class is my favorite class because of the professor. It could easily be the worst class ever, but the topics and materials selected by the professor are very interesting. When I first found out about the daily participation grade for the class, I almost dropped it because of my extreme fear of public speaking. Through this class, I can explore my creative side while at the same time I am able to conquer one of my all time greatest fears. The time of the class and my attitude towards the class are great also.

I have two least favorite classes. Both of them are my least favorite because of the professors’ inabilities to teach well. My least least favorite class is at 8am, which makes it even worse. I have to wake up way too early and drive from baton rouge to new orleans to experience poor teaching skills, which leads to absences, which really cannot help my grade very much. To make that class a little better, I could have rescheduled it to a different time. I should have known that I am not very good when it comes to going to an early class.

Next semester I will try to not have any classes that are too early, especially not any classes that are not very interesting which are taught by people with poor teaching skills. I will try to do some research on the professors to see if they have what it takes or not. I will also try to have a more positive attitude.

CLASSeS

Posted by Jillique Logan on November 3, 2008

There aren’t really any classes that I absolutely hate attending. I do think that lecture classes are absolutely pointless especially those at 8 a.m. I wake up to hear someone read notes to me and then give me the same notes to take to my room and study. If I were illiterate, I could see the point but as I am not I would prefer to enjoy my sleep and teach myself at a later time. I understand that the staff or available to assist, but really? The reading has got to go if I have to attend lectures. I would much rather have classes where I am expected to teach myself (as I do anyway) and then the teacher is on hand for questions. Lecture could be optional! There aren’t any teachers in particular that I dislike. They have a job as my professor and I have one as a teacher. Personalities need not enter the equation unless I feel that my grade is threatened. I like classes that allow me to think outside of the box and are not just factually based, but involve actual perception. I like hearing different points of view and being allowed to express my own.  I love class discussions, etc. Hearing someone read and drone on and on just doesn’t do it for me..especially not at 8am. I try to adapt my habits for each class. In one class I space out and in another I actually take notes depending on how different the lecture is from the written notes which doesn’t usually vary. I think that works now and will probably work in the future. Each class has a different style and requires a different amount of work. Some just require very strong coffee and patience!

Classes…

Posted by Britney Weary on November 3, 2008

I like my favorite class simply because its the only class where I can demonstrate my academic ability and get graded for it in the same hour. Every Monday I walk into the class prepared to do my best and receive the grade I desire. I control what I get. Not like I don’t control all of my grades, its just I fell as though I have more control when the effects are immediate.

I dislike my least favorite class because it is the most boring class I have ever had to sit in my entire life. We done absolutely nothing but listen to my teacher speak for hours in monotone. He doesn’t engage us or try to get us to understand concepts. Sometimes he asks questions but we aren’t able to give him the answer he’s looking for because we never know what he wants or what he’s really asking.

The thing that makes my favorite class so enjoyable is that I always walk in the room with a positive attitude. I feel confident in all the work that I’ve done to prepare for that class. I like waiting to receive my grades and helping those who need help. After its over preparation for the next week begins.

The thing that makes my least favorite class so dreadful is that when I think about what will be going on in the class I get so tired. All I want to do is go up to my room and take a nap. The class is just so boring and we as students are completely unengaged. The only time I get the least bit excited is when we have a test, which was one time.

The class I like is good because, number one, the subject is one of my strengths, and secondly, I have absolutely no doubt in my work or the help I give others. I know the correct answers and I can deliver them. The class I dislike isn’t as good because, first of all, its a subject in which the correct answer really depends on the individual, and secondly, the concepts just make no sense to me. The subject being a science to me is ridiculous.

I think to make my most disliked class better I could have tried a bit harder to be involved in the lecture instead of just placing the entire responsibility upon the shoulders of my teacher. In the future I think that if I try to ask more questions the class will become more interesting making it more likely that not only myself but my classmates will succeed as well.

Week 10: Classes

Posted by Sarah Wilson on November 3, 2008

My favorite classes are my Tuesday and Thursday classes. At 8:00 am- 11:40 am on Tuesday. On Thursday 8:00am and 1:15 pm.  This class is fun to me. I get to participate in the class. Also talk to my neighbors about the class discussion. I get to focus on all my classes that I don’t have that day. Also the classes I do have on that day. I have time to take naps in between and I don’t have to rush to doing my work. I have more to do the assignments. My Least favorite class is a none credit course. I take that class for nothing to me. It’s a waste of time and energy to do that work for that class. I feel that it’s really a waste of my time to got to that class and do the material for that class. This class is very boring to me. I have no kind of fun at all.  I would had made the class credit hour course. Made more interesting ,andfun to learn and interact with to do the material in class. So the students try to at least come to class. Participate and do what they have to do to pass the course. I would try to look on the bright side of things and do what I have to do in that class to pass. I feel that if I was interested in the class more I would have a better attitude about the material and class. Then I would focus on the materials like I suppose too.

Classes

Posted by Nikketa Washington on November 3, 2008

My favorite class would have to be my 10:00 and my 1:00 classes. What I like mostly about those classes that they are easy and i can really focus in those classes. My teachers are very active with everything that they do and they always keep you guessing on what will they do next. Like in my ten o’clock class its not to early or anything because by the time I get in their I will be willing to work and not sleepy. Also in that class my teacher gives us all types of advantages when we do our work sometimes she will hold study session’s. If we dont pass our mastery test the first she will give us a second chance to redo it before she  gives us the test again she go’s over it once again.  And what i like about that class is that itis never boring and she always have something for us to do but it’s easy work. My one o’clock class is the same way he always have us laughing and its never a dull day with him. And with him its like we do something new everday but it is the same lesson that we learned a couple of days ago but he always makes it different. What makes it more different is when he is teaching us the lesson in different language and he talks real fast. In the end you would be than understood what he would have said. He is just a real good and funny teacher. The classes that i dislike is my 9:00 and 12:00 classes I really dont have to much to say about those classes. Is that I wish I could i have better teachers in my nine o’clock my teacher goes striaght through the lesson like you just suppose to catch it right then and their. And when you ask him to redo the problem again sometimes he acts like he dont want to redo it but even though he’s like that I’am not going to give up on anything. In my twvele o’clock me jus talks you to death and the only type of work that we do is just essays and read our book and their is just no excitement in that class at all but like I said I’am not going to let any of that discourage me and I’m going to stride to do my best.

CLASSES

Posted by Courtney McClain on November 3, 2008

My favorite classes that I have now are my hands on classes and my classes where we have open discussions. I’m a hand on learner and I love to share my opinion. Having an open conversations and hands on learning in classes is exciting it keeps me woke and expands my mind on different topics and things in the world. I love the teacher that I have in my class where we have open discussions, I believe that the teacher makes the class if the teacher is boring then the material will be. The teacher that teaches my hands on class is kind of boring but what we do in class is what makes it exciting and makes me want to learn more. The class that I dropped was a lecture class, I hate sitting and listing to someone talk I understand that’s basically what the classes in college is made of I know what I need to work on. The teacher that taught the class was amazing it was just me, the student. I know that I wasn’t studying how I should have nor was I paying attention as much as I could. Even though I said earlier the teacher makes the class, the student should also be able to learn and pass a class regardless of the teacher. There is noting wrong with the attendance, scheduling or requirements for any of the classes I have. I believe all of them are legit; it just depends on what kind of person you are.

Classes

Posted by Alexis Johnson on November 3, 2008

As of now, the only class I do not like is this one. I do not like the fact that we have to take this class; however, we do not receive and hours for the time spent. The other reason why this class is my least favorite because we hardly in class to discuss anything. Outside of the reasons stated, this is the only class that I dislike.

As for class I like and/or love, I can say Biology Lab, English, and sometimes Math! I believe that I like these classes more because my professors are more laid back, give us more freedom, and trying to guide us, as students, into the right directions without being offensive. Biology Lab is fun because just for the fact that its a hands on learning experience! It can be confusing at times, but it is fun. English is fun just because she stresses on the fact that we have to expand our thoughts for our essays. Sometimes, the thoughts can come across random, but they usually advance your writing skills. “It’s so simple once you know the formula!” I only here that in Math. She can explain the hardest problem known to man  making it complicated, and that why I think we, as her math class, love her. These professors are the best I heard compare to my other classmates. I hope I can get them again next semester.

My attendance have been perfect until lately! I have not missed a day of class unless I had to go home or a conflict of scheduling. I do like to be late so I try my best to avoid it. Attendance is not a problem, but the timing of the professors could be better.

Classes

Posted by whochrisvu on November 3, 2008

I’ll admit that I’m a bit of a nerd.  I was looking forward to seeing what college life and classes were all about.  As we are near the end of the first semester, I can say that I’m impressed with some professors and upset with the others.  The class that I look forward to going to is on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  In this class, it pretty much is a group discussion about the texts we were assigned to read.  I like the class because it has a comfortable atmosphere, and you can say whatever is on your mind.  The class frequently gets off topic, but it’s always about something interesting or funny.  Another plus for the class is that there are no tests or quizzes because everything is based on essays.  I find that in this particular class, the essay isn’t as demanding compared to other classes.

The class I dislike the most unfortunately meets four times a week.  FOUR!  It’s an 8:00 class that lasts for fifty minutes, but more recently the teacher likes to make class longer to finish explaining a problem or to go over another one.  The teacher is what I find to be the problem, or more specifically the teaching style.  It’s kinda hard for me to explain.  I had a similar class in high school and learned it more efficiently.  The way the current teacher does it… it’s different and in not a good way.  The teacher would often spend most of the class reviewing homework (which can be a good thing), but would cram a lesson in the remaining 5-10 minutes.  There is only so much you can do in a fifty minute time period.  There really isn’t anything I can do to make the class better.  It’s the other students in class that bombard the teacher with homework questions which he takes the time to answer.  I’m not struggling at all in the class, so I don’t need to make any changes.  It’s just a class that I’m not too happy with and am looking forward to finishing in December.

Classes

Posted by Edward Hill,III on November 3, 2008

In high school, my intended major was psychology. My current major is accounting with a minor in finance. I really enjoy dealing with other people’s problems and behaviors. Helping people get through their problems without counteracting with other problems interests me. I changed my major to accounting because I like managing money. With a degree in accounting, I can manage my family’s business. Being a certified accountant will benefit my family and I. Paying someone to do something I am interested in and enjoy doing wouldn’t be a smart decision. The cause of me changing my major was a long term decision. If a family member was to take care of the business, all information would be known without going through some other business that would charge outrageous prices to give information that is needed. Now I’m saving money and knowing what is going on if there is a problem I can fix it myself. I won’t change my major because I’m enjoying it. Even though I’m just beginning the process to becoming an accountant, I feel like I’m comfortable with the decision I have made. Later in life, I see myself as a personal accountant to a large number of people. I would like to start my on accounting firm in Atlanta or New York. The thought of moving that far to pursue my career has came across my mind but I have to do what it takes to provide for my bad spending habits when shopping. No one will give you anything in life, you have to work for it.

You Love Some, You Hate Some (CLASSES).

Posted by Angelia Sprott on November 3, 2008

I am currently enrolled in five classes here at Xavier. It seems odd to me because the class that I like the least is something that I am very good at, and the class that I like the most is a class that I hated in high school. The class that I like the most here at Xavier is my favorite because, my professor takes the time to explain the theories and different beliefs of whatever person we are studying for that week. It is exciting to compare the views of people who shaped modern thinking. Being in this class makes you question almost everything you have been told, and what we have come to believe. I really don’t understand why I don’t enjoy what I consider my least favorite class. Because I have always been good at speaking in front of crowds and giving presentations; its almost as if it comes natural. Its just that the assignments don’t challenge me that much . So I become content with turning in work that is mediocre. I guess I could give more input in class on what subjects interest me, more so than the topics that are given to us in class. Even though I like the class the least out of all my classes, I don’t completely hate it. It has its interesting moments every blue moon. I think that I can learn something from this experience of been in this class. I know that I’m not going to like all my classes here, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t worth taking.

Classes!

Posted by Freddie Williams on November 3, 2008

I like my favorite class more so than I do my least favorite class because in my favorite class things are stable. Stable meaning that I know when I am going to have a test or quiz, I know exactly how much it will be worth in my overall grade, and I know how long before I will get my grade back. Also, because of the stability of my favorite class I notice a much higher understanding of what I am doing, which my higher grades in my favorite class reflects. I guess one could say that this is a problem caused by the teacher for if he/she would set dates for everything thats due and the percentage that it will be worth then the class would seem so much more easy. The work itself is not hard it is just that when the work is assigned days before it is due and one is not really well informed on what to do it seems as though the work is impossible to complete efficiently. When it comes to attendance I honestly put more effort into attending my more favorite classes. It is logical that I do so because in my favorite class I am always interested and never put in bad spirits by the class’ structure. Maybe if I would have took the time to talk individually with my least favorite class’ teacher my attitude towards that class wold be totally different. If I would have taken the time to talk one-on-one with my teacher this class might seem more structured altogether, making it less of my least favorite class. In the future I know now that it is very important for one to communicate with their professors. I know that maybe teachers are not always the most perfect people on Earth, yet they still can tell you exactly what they want you to do and exactly how they want you to do it, even if it does take a little extra work on our parts as students.

Classes

Posted by Corneisha McCorkle on November 3, 2008

My favorite class is hilarious every time I go. I try not to miss any of my classes and so far I haven’t. For my favorite class I try to be at least five minutes early so I don’t miss anything. I don’t just enjoy the class because I think its funny. Every time I go to that class I learn something new or see something from a completely different view than my own. I go to that class and it makes me think outside the box and I love that. Another reason why it is my favorite class is it challenges me. I have to work for my grades in that class and that makes me appreciate it the subject matter all the more. You could say that this particular class had an advantage, because I loved the subject matter before I was in the class. My professor just sealed the deal. I enjoy this class so much that I plan on taking that professor’s upper level class next semester.

My least favorite class is so boring it is ridiculous. Every day I fight to stay awake, but I usually don’t win that battle. I am not exaggerating in the least, everyday I have to go stand up in the back of the room to stop myself from falling asleep. Another reason this particular class is at the bottom of my list is its easy. I enjoy being challenged and actually learning. Everytime I turn in a paper or take a quiz or exam I don’t try my hardest by far. Despite that I do consistently well, the lowest score I have ever received in the class was a “B”. I do well and don’t try and that equals boring in my book. To improve this class I could try to actively participate in discussions. That may help me stay awake and establish a positive relationship with my professor. In future classes I can try to find someway to further challenge myself and therefore stay interested. I could try to earn perfect scores on everything.

Favorite Classes

Posted by Lamoyne Taylor on November 3, 2008

In my favorite class, I like it because it gives us time to talk.  Its like finally being heard. I mean we actually have a voice in the matter.  THis is an open class so there is really no set fundamental and that is what makes it fun.  In my least favorite class, everything is taught so fast that we do not have time to grasp the knowledge that is taught.  Not only that, this is my worse subject anyway and I feel so rushed when I am in class.  The material in the class is entirely too long, with the respect of being in college.  We are not computers and therefore we can not just calculate things.  We have to be taught and just not showed.  Honestly, I try my best in all classes. I never made a C on anything but yet I have now.  THis makes everything so complicated when it dont have to be.  Then I say that sometimes the lessons do not be clear and everything be clattered together.  We are taught as if that is our only class, but i respect it because it is time for us to show that we actually want to learn.  Whether its my favorite class or my least favorite, I promise to give my all and do whatever it takes to past.  My integrity will not allow nothing less.  Understanding these basics you have to consider my thoughts.  Maybe, if my schedule was not so hectic I sould manage. I do feel as there could be more things done to help the students as well as me manage in this class. One more thing that I do not like is the attendance.  I feel as if it should be the student choice  to come to class, because if a student don’t want to be there than he/she will stop the rest of us from learning.

College Classes…What Else Can I Say?

Posted by Joi Martin on November 3, 2008

In my favorite class, our professor welcomes us in everyday and always sincerely inquires about our time outside of class.  We do not have many students so we do get a lot of one on one time with the professor.  In this class, we often read excerpts from out books and engage in open discusses with our classmates.  The classroom environment is comfortable and everyone feels as if they can be themselves.  We converse about everyday topics, things that we are most concerned about, and just about anything that will allow our peers to explore different ways of viewing the world.  The work is not necessarily difficult but it involves a deep thought process.  Accepting different views, searching our minds for various ways to express ourselves, and thinking outside of the box are common in this class.  It keeps everyone actively involved in the dialogue and the class is always interesting.  Hands down to the professor, the class is incredibly fun to be a part of.

In my least favorite class, we do not receive personal attention because this class is relatively large.  The professor talks for fifty minutes and we leave when class is over.  The atmosphere in this class is stressful, the work is hard, and studying for the class is time consuming.  I dread to wake up in the morning because of think class and maybe my grade is a reflection of my attitude towards the class.  However, I have turned over a new leaf and began to take the class with a more positive outlook.  I started attending tutoring and receiving additional help from friends.  Hopefully I can bring my grade up to my satisfactory and remain optimistic for the future related classes.

I realize that I cannot let my classes and the workloads I carry stress me out.  I have to remain calm, ask for help, and study as much as possible without overworking myself.  The transition has been the hardest thing for me…but now that I have the jest of college, I can better prepare for my classes and manage my time better.  Everything has definitely been a learning process for me and I use all experiences as opportunity to improve.

Class

Posted by Brittany Stamps on November 3, 2008

My favorite class is only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My grade as of right now is a strong B. My professor believes once our final assignment is turned in I will have an A. Although that class tends to be long, the information is very much interesting and so is the material that we read. Most of the students in the class participate. My professor is very laid back and he has a strong accent that I find hard to block out or ignore. He is also modern and up to date when it comes to our pop culture. This is the only class I have not missed any days in . I am very  to receive my final grade in this class.

My least favorite class is also on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In that class I have a C average. This class is not only in a dull environment but the material, work, and requirements are all uninteresting. I force myself to stay awake every week and try to jam all the information into my mind. One of our requirements is to read about twenty pages about things that I cannot remotely relate to. This is one reason why I cannot fully apply myself to the class or the work. One way I plan on making this course better is to read sections at a time and make sure that I fully understand them and can comprehend the concept of the chapter. Maybe then I can start participating in the class and make it easier to stay awake.

Classes

Posted by Phuong Dao on November 3, 2008

My favorite classes right now are the classes that mainly applies to my major and career. My least favorite classes are the one that’s not very important to my major. For some of my favorite classes, the teachers sometimes make it unfavorable. Their attitude sometime bothers me because I had such high expectation for all the teachers at Xavier to be more professional than high school teachers. The materials for my favorites classes are just great with me, I’m learning even without listening to the teachers. The timing for my favorable classes are pretty fair and I enjoy it, I sometimes wish I can take fewer classes though. My unfavorable classes for some odd reasons are schedule at times that doesn’t appeal to me and the teachers are ok. Actually, for the classes I don’t like it’s not the teachers I don’t like it’s more of the work. The materials are easy for me but it’s just the amount of work that is pushed on to me in such a short amount of time. For me to like to my unfavorable classes better maybe I can schedule them at a different time. In the future, despite any problems, I should just try and concentrate to do my work. Even if I don’t like it I still have to take the class and complete the assignments.

CLASSES

Posted by Roseanna Desiree Jessup on November 3, 2008

My favorite class…??? I honestly have to say that, this semester, I don’t have a class that really strikes me as a favorite. There is one that might be better than the rest. I like it because there is constantly new material and it is delivered in an interactive way. Notes are given but the material is practiced as well. I think it is the type of class it is which makes it my favorite. There are formulas and rules to follow rather than just memorization. This is much better than just being bombarded with loads of notes,  which brings me to my least favorite class. I can’t stand this class. Although it is only 50 minutes, it seems like forever. The professor is very monotonous and puts me to sleep. The class is just very  boring. I’ve tried different things to make this class better. I try to take a nap during my break before this class so that I’ll be well rested and possibly manage to stay awake. I also try to read and study the material being covered beforehand so that I will have a better understanding. It works, somewhat. I still find myself very bored. Sometimes I still catch myself dosing off.

In the future I can continue taking these steps to deal with classes I dislike. For classes like that, sometimes it takes a bit more to be successful at them. Sometimes I might have to study more and get extra, EXTRA sleep. Whatever it takes, it has to be done.

Week 10: Classes

Posted by Mike Tran on November 2, 2008

My favorite classes right now are the classes that I had trouble in since high school. Even though I came into college not looking forward to these classes, but my professors changed my attitude. They broken down the subjects to ease and focused on one point. They also broke it down step by step so I wouldn’t be afraid to run away from the problem. Even though I am making below average grades in these courses, but that does not matter because I am finally learning.

One of my least favorite classes is terrible in every direction. First, it does not hurt my grade, but it takes up most of my time. Second, the class is very unorganized and packed for a small room. The assignments are pretty boring and long for a class that does not count. And I do not like how the professor teaches or talk. My other least favorite subject is a very boring class. Maybe because it is a lecture class? The main reason why I dislike this class is because the professor does not do a very good job teaching and the materials for studying is just notes that are discussed in the classroom. The teacher talks all period and the room is so big that it seems like we all are siting in an opera theater.

To makes everything better for me is to just suck it up because in life there will be things that we are disgusted by, but we have to deal with it. Everybody has a different way of teaching styles, and one way to help is to adjust to the environment. Who knows, maybe in a couple of months those classes might be my favorite class.

Classes.

Posted by Mychelle Williams on November 2, 2008

I currently have 8 classes. i generally have three a day except on mondays I have drill which makes it four.

I really the class that is specific to my major. The environment makes all the difference; which includes the instructor, the room temperature, the class size and the location. My instructor shows us how the material directly related to us. That connection makes the material easier to retain. My instructor also presents the material in an interesting manner. The whole experience I look forward to each and every week. I never dread going to this class and I even arrive early. For the record unless absolutely imperative, I never miss a class and I am rarely late.

I also like my class that somehow corresponds to what I learn in the class that is specific to my major. My instructor is a very friendly and personable person. The relationship is warm and not uneasy. The class temperature although cold sometimes is comfortable and the lecture is interactive. The students are constantly engaged and once again he shows us how to relate the material directly to our life so that we will remember more easily. The class although rigorous is  a fun rigorous and I also look forward to the class discussions.

Now the classes that don’t necessarily “tickle my fancy” are the ones that I have to take. I mean the classes that are requirements but not necessarily my choice. It takes away from my  attitude for the class because if I attended the class because it sparked my interest I would be more inclined to look forward to the class. But the “core classes” I don’t really like that much.

Its really cold and in most of them and uncomfortable. If I cannot be comforatble in the classroom environment then the chances of me liking or even retaining the information are pretty slim. The material is either boring me  to tears or is too complex for me to see the connection to me. My instructors aren’t the reason why these classes are bad, its just what they teach. Sometimes they may joke or try to engage us but the material is so intense that it is a loss cause.

I would really dislike those classes if the teacher was mean and angry and dry (like the dry eyes commercial). If the environment could get any colder that definitely would ruin my experience and also if the class size was bigger. In my more personal classes, I feel that I like them more.

To be successful in the classes both good and bad I know that I just have to work hard. Whether or not I like the class makes no difference because I know that at the end of the day I have to take and pass it or spend more money. Also I don’t like to waste money, and that’s why I try to succeed in each class. Getting to know the teachers makes the experience better. For instance when I didn’t know my instructors, it was easy to say “he is a jerk” or “she is so mean”. But when a relationship was formed I got to see that the bad was all apart of my imagination (most times). =]

Classes…

Posted by Erin Gardner on November 2, 2008

One of my favorite classes now was actually my most dreaded when I first received my schedule.  I was very uneasy about the class in the beginning because it requires a great deal of public speaking, presentation, and class participation in order to pass.  In reality, I was even more concerned about the teacher and his/her grading style; considering the course’s material, I automatically assumed the grading would be harsh.  Nevertheless, after the first week of class, the professor had created such a free and relaxed atmosphere that I began to look forward to participating in class.  As the semester moved along, I wished that I could have had the class more than just twice per week.  In addition, I found myself going to class early and staying after it had ended so that I could listen to other classmates’ presentations or to continue participating in debates that may have taken place during that period.

On the other hand, my least favorite class has earned its status strictly because of my professor’s teaching style.  In addition, the professor has a thick foreign accent which can be very frustrating at times. I find myself spending most of the class putting forth extra effort to comprehend what he/she says while consequently falling behind on the notes. The professor does have a sufficient amount of preparation materials for tests and quizzes and even gives reviews before the tests; however, all the preparation is a bit irrelevant when the test does not have the slightest similarity to the review notes or preceding practice test.  All in all, the class can become a real aggravation and as a student I must continuously “suck it up” and hope that the semester passes quickly.  Perhaps, if all the classmates would come to an organized consensus and have an open discussion with the professor on a well-deserved change, then we may be able to take a step in the right direction altogether.  Therefore, the students would have less stress during class time and the professor would have less apprehension due to students’ grades and complaints.

[[My Classes]]

Posted by Jacinda Whitley on November 2, 2008

My current favorite class is Pre-Calculus. I actually find this strange because I hated math class before I got to Xavier. But I do have a good teacher(Mrs. Jones) who was a Xavier student, which may be why I like the class. The class is also challenging and when I do well in a challenging class I tend to continue to do well. Though this class is at 8 o’clock in the morning, I still wake up energized and ready to go to class in the morning. Even though I didn’t do so well on the last exam, I know why I messed up and how to fix. My teacher was able to help understand my mistakes and fix them. My least favorite class at the moment is Biology Lab, which is bad because Biology is my major. I think I don’t like this class as much because it’s late in the day and I have to get refocused before I go. I also find it hard to understand my teacher. Being that the class is only one hour a week and there’s a quiz every week, I don’t get excited to go to that class. I like biology lecture way more which is weird because I would think the class that’s more hands on would be better for me. This class is also longer than any other I have. I think I could make biology lab be better if I had a better attitude towards the class. I could also go to the tutorials to get whatever it is I didn’t quite understand in class. Though I like other classes, I feel that the classes I don’t like so much will improve.

Classes – The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Posted by Trang Tran on November 2, 2008

My favorite class is on the subject of my least favorite which is also the hardest subject for me. Even though I dislike the subject, my professor makes it seem so easy. I can sit all day in class to listen to my professor’s when she teaches. She also makes me want to learn more about the materials and looking forward for the next lesson. I am having A’s on the subject that I dislike for years, can you believe it? Now, it had become my favorite class. This is an incredible class because my professor’s unique ways of teaching. She delivers the hard lessons into the easiest lessons by giving the class the most common examples to help the class observe the materials in the lesson. On the other hand, the easiest class that I have on my schedule is my least favorite class.

My least favorite class is killing me right now. Even though it is an easy class, but it takes up a lot of my time. I dislike this class because of the classroom environment and the work. For some reason, the classroom is not bringing my class together as a class, perhaps the arrangement, which leads us into no interaction and participation. If there is no interaction and participation, most likely we are going to get bored of it and lose interest, and I did. This is a really easy class but my professor gives us a lot of work to do. I guess to make this class better; I have to try to talk to my professor about the room arrangement and hopefully lesser work to do, so I can have more time to study on my hard classes. I mean this is not going to affect my grade but I would like to want to go to class rather than crying every time I enter the class.

Classes

Posted by Hung Le on November 2, 2008

The most memorial class I had in high school was world literature. The reason I like it so much was because of all the creative projects, I had the opportunity to work with such as paintings, power points and skits. I felt as though the material was presented in a entertaining way which made very interesting to learn. It also gives the students to the opportunity express themselves individually, which I rarely see today. I can sympathize with teachers who just started teaching, because it very hard to teach and be interesting at the same time. The fact still remains, if the teacher is not relevant and somewhat interesting. The student will just simply go to sleep or occupy themselves with other distractions such as texting. Which brings me to the worst class I ever had in my high school career. The class was world history, I thought my teacher was a robot for the first semester. The reason being he read all his lectures from a computer, that class seem light it lasted for eternity. I believe it all depends, on what teacher, what class and sometimes the material as well. All this depends on what situation the student is in but for the most part, I believe the student should know that they are responsible. The deciding factor on whether I class is bad or good is simple, interest. I know I’m going to have classes that is going to be boring but I still feel if there interest, I will learn a great deal more. I believe I could have try to pay attention more in history class, at least my doing that I could have made better grades. I need to practice patience, whether it interesting or not.

Hmmm…my favorite class. My favorite class I like because of my teacher. He is a really down to earth and cool person. He explains things very well. The work is okay, not to bad. We have papers to write EVERY week, but he makes the topics so that we can relate and it makes them easier to write. The material isn’t to bad either, its just alot of stuff to remember. I attend every class period. The requirements are not that bad either. As for my attitude towards the class its okay, but I dislike the time the class starts. By the time I get to this class all my friends just got out of their last class. As for my least favorite class I completly dislike it. It’s almost two hours long and the professor’s voice is so annoying. His voice is so monotone and gets on my nerves. Sometimes I wish I could just fall asleep, but I know I can’t do that. The class is just really boring. The work, nor the material isn’t really that hard, but the teacher just makes it bad. I have good attendance, but its hard to get up and go to this class some days. My good part about my favorite class is just the class itself and the teacher. My worst class is bad because of EVERYTHING! The teacher, notes, and the tests. There is absolutly nothing I can do to make this class better. Maybe I will bring a book and read, actually I should bring markers so I can color. To be more sucessfull I need to study my notes and the textbook more so I can do better on the tests.

Classes

Posted by Cherise Steib on November 2, 2008

It is so crazy because my favorite class is my hardest class. It is my favorite class because the teacher has such a great personality. Even though the class is difficult, my teacher makes it fun. The class gets a laugh all of the time. When things are extra tough, my teacher encourages the whole class. He also has great teaching methods that allow the class to understand the material. My least favorite class is one of the easiest classes. The reason the class is my least favorite is solely because of the professor. I must admit, my professor is very intelligent but this semester is the first semester that he is teaching this particular subject. He cannot teach at all! We are always behind and I have to go to another lecture on Thursdays during my break to try to catch up. That is very miserable to go to an extra class. I also go to another teacher during office hours to get help. I have to put forth a lot of extra effort to stay on track. It’s weird because I have an A in that class, but it’s the worst class.

I don’t think that there is really anything I could do to make my least favorite class any better. All I can do is just hang in there until the end of the semester. If in the future I have another class that is not so successful, I will just do the same thing I did this semester. I’m sure there are other lectures that would be available for me to attend.

Classes

Posted by Jamaan Kenner on November 2, 2008

I don’t have a “favorite” class, but I do have two that I prefer over the rest.  I prefer one of the classes because of the discussions that we engage in.  They aren’t boring or annoying. Instead, they are interesting and are about topics that I can relate to; and they teach and inform me of what I need to know for the class.  I think its the teacher that makes this class so good because its one of my least favorite subjects.  The other class that I prefer is my most laid back class.  I get all the information that I need, while being able to be “loose” in class and not have the worries that your traditional classes come with.  I think I prefer this class because of the teacher too because I hate the lecture portion of that subject.  I have one class that I extremely dislike.  I think that it is purposeless.  First, we don’t get a credit for it.  Another reason is that we have to go to different presentations outside of class that don’t interest me at all, despite all of the other work that we have.  The main reason is that we don’t talk about anything meaningful in class.  I don’t learn anything, and I feel like it is a waste of 50 minutes for me to go.  To make that class better, I guess I could be more open to some of the things that we have to do; but I hate it when I’m forced to do things by giving a penalty that I cannot afford.  In the future, I could learn about the teachers before I take the course so that I can know what to expect.

Classes – The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly:

Posted by Latasha Smith on November 2, 2008

My favorite class world have to be Sociology because that is my major and every day that I have that have that class I learn so much everyday about the social world, and my least favorite class would have to be Math pre-algebra when I was in high school I use to the math I was the best in the class I took 4 half year of math why its change think its because I was so use the same teacher for four year a lot he him be a lot through my work I went from failing the class to a B+ student an there is nobody to push me to become a 3.00 student after being around positive people and my family & friends but I had to learn that this what am doing with my life and I understand my grades is not good but I will be improve myself and I had to tell my self that I can do this. This is what keep me going Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

The Good, Bad, and Ugly

Posted by Jasmine Wise on November 2, 2008

Well I have three favorite classes and I like for different reasons. One of my classes I love because its my favorite subject and the teacher is great. He really knows how to break down the subject matter to you level. He repeats himself many times and is funny also which is a plus.  I think that fact that I’m good at this subject also makes me like it more.

The second I like because the class is fun and the teacher is fun also. I don’t have a fantastic grade in that class but I still love going to it. The subject matter is made entertaining while your learning. It’s my procrastination that has given me my poor score.  We also have to do a service learning project in this class and I think that is another reason that I like it we get to learn outside of the classroom.

I like the last class because of the teacher only; I enjoy going to class just because they are a wonderful teacher. I actually hate this subject but the time that I am within the class makes it enjoyable.

My least favorite class occurs at eight o’clock in the morning and the teacher is very boring. Boring and early in the morning do not sit well with me.  Its a lab so therefore we only meet once a week and I can’t skip. (not saying that I do) There really is nothing that can be done to change this course because it is required and I can’t change the teachers that are at Xavier.  The material in the class isn’t hard its just, I don’t know what it is.

in the future I know that I am going to have to go to class whether I like the class or not. I do that now so I think in the future it won’t be hard. Until senior-itis kicks in. Thats when your senior year comes around and you don’t want to do anything at all but graduate.

classes.

Posted by Melinda Williams on November 2, 2008

My favorite class is my favorite because it is very laid back and chill, which are two characteristics that I really like. I’ve taken the class in high school and I enjoyed it then because the class requires you to be open minded. And in college, the class is even better because the people in the class are of different ages and backgrounds which leads to interesting conversations, ideas and debates. The material is interesting because it relates to everyday society and you can apply it to your everyday life which is cool. I find myself able to pay attention simply because the class is relevant to me. Also, the professor who teaches it makes the class more interesting by bringing in group activities and outside readings that makes you think.

My least favorite class is a class that I dread to go to everyday that I have it. The teacher is ridiculous and off the wall. And I dislike her even more because she reminds me of my old dance moderator, whom I did not get along with. Overall the class frustrates me because I know that I cannot receive an A due to how the teacher grades. And in my opinion it is completely unfair because I want to earn a good grade but the grade I have now, I do not think it reflects the work I have given her. I am not sure what will make the class better for me besides knowing that I only have about 4 weeks of it left. But I just completed a big project that is due, so I am grateful that it’s finished. I worked really hard on it but I know that I won’t receive an A so that made me not want to put my all into it. The class gives me a feeling of defeat, and I have never had a defeatist attitude before.

ClAsSeS!!

Posted by Kirsten Smith on November 2, 2008

My favorite class is the first class that I have everyday of the week except Thursdays. I like this class because I understand all of the material and it is very easy to me. Even though I feel that I did not need to be in the class I got over it and just accepted the fact that I had to take it. My ACT score was not high enough in the subject so I had to take this class even though I already know how to do all of the material. The professor is a good teacher even though she does make a lot of mistakes. She does try to help students if they are struggling in the class so they can pass it at the end of the semester. My least favorite class is a subject that I thought would be easy because all you have to do is study. The reason I do not like the class is because the professor is not very interesting. She has a monotone voice and the class is at a late time so that makes it worse. I have a three hour break before the class so sometimes I will take a nap so I will not be tempted to fall asleep in the class. To make the class that I think is the most boring better, I will just have to focus on what I am here for and just study. I will also just have to try to make the best of the class for the rest of the semester.

Classes

Posted by Angelica Wilson on November 2, 2008

The class that I like the most is mainly because of the professor’s teaching style.  This is my favorite class because we get to interact with one another and do hands-on projects.  I love that because, if it was a lecture I would probably get bored or distracted.  I’am a type of person that likes to get involved, so I have to actually do the work to see any progress.  As for any class there are pros and cons, the only thing that I don’t like about my favorite class is its time.  The class is from 2:00pm until 4:50pm, by that time I’am usually tired and ready to go home.  The class is on a Monday and for me I be at school all day from 8am-4:50. But once I get in there Iam ready for whatever that comes my way.

As for my least favorite class, it would have to be because of my professor and his heavy accent.  I really enjoy the subject, but I can not understand it.  It also has has alot to do with the way he explains the material.  Because everything that I was taught in high school, he does if different and that confuses me.  The class is very easy but very hard at the smae time. What I can do to be successful in this class is to talk to the teacher during his office hours and also use the tutorial sessions that are offered.  I think that this would be a really big help in picking up my grades for the class.  I just have to stop being so shy and go talk to the teacher, like an adult when I have a problem about the material.

My favorite class is different. It is different in a good way.Our professor is strict on the way we write certain things but it is for the better. He makes class interesting and fun.He makes us laugh and really cares about how well we perform in the class room.He is big on African American literature and how us as African Americans need to take advantage of the opportunity that we have.Use all of our resources to the best of our ability and to understand what we are doing. He asks for our opinions on stories we have read or movies we have just watched. He doesn’t care if they are good or bad comments he just enjoys listening to our opinions as students. We are able to talk about any and everything in this class wether its about the class subject or not…he says that we are all a family we can and should be able to talk about things with one another. The class that I like the least it more because of the students than the professor. The professor has some reason to do with my resons for not liking the class but not all.The students are rude and the professor really doesn’t have time to teach. There are interruptions after interruptions and there is really nothing another student can do about it.So when it comes to the test we are unable to know whats going on because what we dont go over in class we have to read or find out on our own.I do not think it is fair that we have to suffer because of other students rude actions.

Classes- The Good? the bad! and the ugly!!

Posted by Hai Tran on November 2, 2008

Well in school, we all have our favorite classes and our least favorite classes. Be it the teacher or the material itself, EVERYONE has one.

My favorite is because of my teacher. He is really funny and at the same time very laid back. He’s pretty bad at teaching though I must say, but he’s a genius at another subject I found out, so I guess I’ll take him for that class when I have a chance. My least favorite subject is because I feel it is a waste of my time. Personally, I shouldn’t even be taking that class, but they forced me to take it due to some weird reasons like “They never got my ACT score” which I find unreasonable since I send my ACT and SAT score here three times and all of them exceed the needed limit for me to bypass the class in the first place, so tell me they never received it three times? Personally, all my classes are perfectly fine, I like them all, even though some of them aren’t my forte. I enjoy all my classes and put forth effort into everything I do in those classes, but I need to keep up the mentality before I mess up. Mess up and it might be game over.

What I could do to make the class I least like more enjoyable is just suck it up and take it. I mean I’m stuck, I might as well learn something new right? Its not like complaining can do me any good. For me to be better in this class, I would say next time make sure things get done properly, and just make sure everything I need to do is done and everything that is done is correct. That way if I don’t have the correct things, I can change it before its too late.
