Until I got into the second semester of freshman seminar I never knew how important our voices could be as young individuals.  Nor did i know how big of an impact blogging could have on a community.  There are several ways that I would be able to reach my goals in my personal mission statement. One of my goals in my mission statment was to become a pharmacist.  I could use my voice when I am trying to to apply for a job because just giving someone my resume and not talking about it would not get me a job.  I would have to speak upon myself to let them know what I have done in the past, what I feel I am capable of, and how I will handle certain situations.  My advice to the incoming freshamn is that just because were are young individuals our voices are still able to be heard. In the college life things are not just handed to us like in high school and in order to get what we want we have to go out and get it.  Talking to or getting to know many people will be of much help.  You are unable to meet new people without using your voice.

The most important think that I can do to make my voice be heard is to continue to work hard and  beat the odds. People are going to try and stop you from pursing your goals and aspirations all throughout your life and I’m going to be the one to ensure that I continue my journey to medical school no matter how challenging it will become.  In order to be heard and to have people listen to you, you have to look presentable. So I will ensure that when I’m in the presence of professionals, I am looking and acting professional.

If I had to advice incoming freshman, I would tell them to make sure they are staying ahead of the game. Work first and play later. I would also tell them to get used to curfew. The best lesson Ihave  learned from the upperclassmen is to get in good with your professors and teachers because you never know when you are going to need them. And most importantly, dress respectfully and respect yourself.  I would try my hardest to get them to understand that all these things,  how they present themselves and who they hang around will have an effect on how effective their voice is.

**Waukesha’s Story**: A Blog By Jacinda Whitley

Waukesha’s encounters with all of the women strengthens her ability to speak her mind and really be a survivor through the situations at hand.  Though she is a strong woman, fighting with her words to reveal the harsh realities of women and struggle, her encounter with Ms. Cecile Payne was one of the most heartfelt. Ms. Cecil was an older lady that took over a place the locals called Walter’s, after her sisters death. Her situation and  willingness to talk about the issues at hand definitely enables Waukesha to persevere. I think she realizes speaking out does not have to be painful and sad it can be relieving. I know myself how hard it is to loose loved ones. And even though I didn’t loose everything in a flood, I feel that it strengthens me in a way as well. I know that it is possible to come from nothing to something.
