Choose two or three areas of responsibility as a student that you know you have not perfected. What are you doing that causes you not to be responsible in these area(s)? How can you improve? What measures will you have to take to be more responsible? How will being more responsible in each of these areas affect your life?

Responsibilities

Posted by Brittany Stamps on October 28, 2008

One area of responsibility I have a problem with is time management.  Although I usually make the deadlines of paper and other assignments I sometimes wait until the last minute to complete them. One cause of my poor time management skills is the fact that my two best friends and I often study together and get sidetracked from our work. One day last week we were all working on papers for various courses and all seemed to be stuck. We then decided to go out to eat. We had a great time but by the time we got home it was nearly 1 o’clock and we were too tired to complete our work. One way I know I can avoid this is to practice working alone. If I can start working alone I can probably be more efficient and more effective when it comes to turning in my work.

Another problem I have when it comes to being responsible is being informed and aware about events and assignments about classes and school. For the first two outside events I did not know about them until the day of because I did not know how to access my webmail. If I would have been involved more before the school year had started I probably would have known how to access webmail and would have know about these outside events and not have missed them because of previous engagements.

Overall if I improve in these areas I will most likely improve my school work and my overall grades. This would be a huge advantage for me.

Jasmine Grant:Responsibility

Posted by Jasmine Grant on October 26, 2008

Two areas of responsibility as a student that I have not yet perfected would be study techniques and procrastination. I am not doing things in a resasonable time. I wait until the last minute to do everything. Includes homework, papers due, just about anything that has some type of importance. With study techniques I do no study like I am supposed to. I know the how and when I need to study but I never use self disipline.I can improve on the procrastionnation part by starting on things the day of. No matter if they are due a week later. The sooner it is done the more free time I would have or the more time I would have to concentrate on other subjects. I can improve my study habbits by applying self disipline. I know what I have to do i just have to make myself do it. I will have to take the measures of putting my priorortites in check. Nothing comes before my school work. Everthing else can and must wait. I need to stay focused on what type of future I am trying to bulid for myself. I can also set goals for myself and trymy best to reach these goals that I set. Being more responsible will affect my life a lot. I won’t have to worry about rushing at the last minute trying to turn in homework,I won’t have to worry about the quality of my work because of the rushing,so then I would not have to worry about the grade that I will recieve on my work. Studying habbits will improve test and quiz scores. It will also improve my gpa.

Responsibilities

Posted by Clyde Varner on October 20, 2008

There are two areas that i would like to improve before i am finished at xavier. These two ares are study skills and time management. An effective way of improving my studies skills could be through trial and error. Using new skills and research everytime that i study could show an increase in results. A good way to improve my time management skills is through preparation. if my day was more planned out i could possibly find a way around all of the random things that come up during the day. Using a calendar or daily planner would make an easy fix to this problem. trying new study skills and making them habits along with using a calendar to have my day planned out would be a very responsible way to fix the two problems i am having. Overall, fixing these problems can benefit me in the long run by helping me become a smarter person and also a prepared person. Being smart and prepared are two key points in life. Living life without these two key points can make life, which is supposed to be enjoyed, very hard and very inconvenient.

Responsibilities

Posted by NeNe Lewis on October 19, 2008

I can think of two areas of responsibility that I have not perfected as a student. One of the areas that I know I have not perfected is keeping my grades up. I have not done kept my grades up in two of my classes. But I have in my other classes. I don’t know why but its just in those two class. I know I have had a lot of pressure on me that I couldn’t handle it all at one time but, its not an excuse. Keeping my grades up is the most important responsibility that I have. I plan on going to every study session and continue going to class everyday like I have been doing. I will meet with my teacher more if I don’t understand something in class. The other responsibility that I have not perfected as a student is managing my time. I now know what people mean when they say “Time flies” because i have experienced that it moves very fast. I’m always pushing for time now. Every minute of the hour really counts. I need to manage my time wisely because I need to plan out how much time I have to study and how much time I have as free time. I plan to get some time management skills that actually works and follow them. I also plan to schedule with my proffessors and join study groups to improve my study habits and my grades. Following these skills will help me to better my life. It will improve my life because I will no longer be failing and I will know how to manage my time.

Responsibility

Posted by Ellington Taylor on October 19, 2008

The two areas of resonsibility that I need to perfect. First I need to learn better time management skills. I also need to improve on the ammount of sleep that I get. At this point these are two major responsiblities that I havent mastered. Time management is a key component to being a good student. This is one thing that I am just beginning to master. In college you have so much time off so it become very easy for you to get destracted. I believe that it all starts with the amount of rest that you get. Its very hard to be on time for anything if you dont have the proper amount of rest. Being on time allows you a chance to become a more productive student. I think that by improving in these areas this whole process will become alot easier. I will become more aware of things before time than waithing until its last minute.

Responsibilities

Posted by Terrianna Woodard on October 16, 2008

As a student there are two things that I haven’t quite mastered completely. I need to work on my study habits and the amount of sleep I receive. I don’t have a set time for studying and I feel that it needs to change abruptly. I study for classes but only when I feel it is important. Therefore instead of designating a specific time each for a subject I just study when something is coming up.  I think that I would benefit tremendously if that habit changed. When it comes to sleep I rarely get any from Sunday until Wednesday. On those days I get no more than 5 hours of sleep. I function enough on that but I would be so much more efficient if I had the amount recommended to have a healthy lifestyle. In the area of studying I am just a procrastinator who has to break what seems to be a never ending cycle. It seems like the only way I can do something early is if I lie to myself and say it is due on an earlier date. The amount of sleep I have is something I have always struggled to control. Just like my habit of procrastinating I have to break this habit. I plan on breaking both habits by setting a schedule and living by it. I will be realistic with myself while writing out my schedule I will try to always keep in mind that nothing will be done exactly as planned every time. Taking these actions to be more responsible will make my life will be a little less stressed and it can be something that will benefit me for the rest of my life.

Responsibilities!!!

Posted by Kia Wilson on October 15, 2008

I know that i have to get a lot more of my responsibilities under control before something bad happens. Two that I need to work on right now is time mangement and keeping up with my school work. These are two big responsibilities for me because my life can get very busy with taking care of my mom who is blind, my dog, and helping my yonger brother. I am always doing something for them first then I tend to my needs because I feel that they come first. Even though my mom is blind I have to do a lot of things for her in order for her to get around. That is the resason why I did not go away for college. However, in college I have to make sure that I am doing what needs to be done here as well. This one responsibility by itself is a headache at times for me.

My other responsibility is making sure that I am keeping up with my school work in every single class because I want to do good while in college like everyone else. I don’t always have a lot of work to do, but sometimes I wait until the last minute to get things done, and thats not always good. School is really important to me and in order for me to finish on time I need to get started on working towards that now. As a freshman I have these responsibilities  and a  whole lot more because things never stop coming my way. I don’t have a problem with it, it’s just at times I wish things were a little bit easier in life.

Responsibilities…we all have them

Posted by Bri Harper on October 15, 2008

Before I got to college I thought it would be a lot harder than it actually turned out to be. One of the biggest differences is that I worked during most of my time in high school. So now that I am in college and I do not have a job it has been a transition because I have to manage the money my parents give me. I am very used to going shopping and buying new clothes and shoes almost every week. Now I have cut down a lot and I find myself trying to buy the necessities. Hopefully this will help me in the long wrong and teach me how to manage my money better. If that goes well hopefully it will carry over to my adult years when I have to care for a family of my own.

A bad habit that I formed in high school was if I did not understand something in class then I would not stay after and ask the teacher for help. I was so happy for school to be over for the day that I did not want to be bothered by staying any longer. Unfortunately I have carried this with me to college. I have made some small improvement by going to chemistry tutoring last week. I was pleased by the results I saw after going because I got a perfect score on my next chemistry quiz. I just need to make a more conscious effort and I will see an improve in my grades which will boost my GPA and make my parents and me happy.

Responsibilities!!!!!

Posted by Courtney McClain on October 15, 2008

A major area that I need to perfect is my study skills and time management. I know that I can definitely do better in both areas but when it comes time for me to study and do homework I always find an excuse to put it off or find excuses for myself on why it isn’t done yet. Personally I am the biggest procrastinator I will wait and wait to do homework and study when I know in mind that I should have studied harder and did my homework days ago, then when the test results come back and the grades I’m mad at myself and blame the teacher on why I did so poorly. I set down a thought about how I can change my actions, from now on I will write an study schedule and when I found out an assignment is due in the beginning of the week or they will be a test, I wont wait to the night before to study or rush to finish the assignment. Also I deiced to start going to the math lab and biology lab for extra help instead of being shy about letting people know that I lack in those areas. If I bring my grade up and become more responsibly that will give me the opportunity to be able to receive more scholarships, study aboard and maybe even make the deans list, also even be able to bribe my father for a new car and more money in my bank account with my grades.

There are two areas which I have not perfected, and I know its part of being a freshman in college. One area which I must perfect is doing my homework and turning it on time. I know that I have a real problem trying to remember what I have for homework especially after a long weekend. I have an agenda but I never look at it. I do write everything down but when I get home I think I don’t have anything to do and don’t look to double check. I think I can improve doing my homework and not forgetting is by making sure I check what I have to do even though I think I don’t have any homework am going to double check anyways and stop being so lazy about it. Being responsible in this area will help me a lot because that way I can get better grades when they check my homework.

Another area I have not yet perfected is going on blackboard to see tests and quizzes’ or if the teacher posted anything important. I’m just not used to going on the computer everyday to check if I have work to turn in or doing a quiz online and that’s bad because I have got an F for a quiz I didn’t no I had to do because I didn’t go online to check. I have to get used to going online and checking blackboard even if there’s nothing there its better then to find out the next day that I had a quiz I forgot to do. Being responsible in that area will help me by passing my quizzes and doing any work I have to do. Its really important to do these things to make being a college freshman easier for me.

Responsibilities

Posted by Cui Wei Zhang on October 14, 2008

Responsibilities?  What freshmen entering college have responsibilities?  We are a lost class, trying to make heads and tails of college life. That alone is enough to responsibility!  Honestly, that’s not true.  I come from a culture where we take responsibility very serious.  In China , we are taught to care for our siblings and take care of the house while our parents try to make a living for us.  With this attitude, I understand that in order to learn, we as students must also take it upon ourselves to be responsible individuals.

Now, what does it mean to be a responsible student?  The answer to this question all boils down to what we want to take away with us at the end of the day.  As students, we owe it to our professor to be present in class.  The professors take time out of their busy schedule to prepare the materials for the lecture they present to us in class, thus it’s not only a courtesy for us students to be present in class, but it’s important in order to grasp the knowledge they try to impart on us.  We should take these valuable lessons and try to understand and ask question if we don’t.  By performing our homework assignments, we essentially are preparing for the big test when it comes around.  The professors have done their part, it’s important as students we do our part.  We have a responsibility not only to ourselves, but to our professors and parents to take as much out of college as possible.  In our to accomplish this, we have a responsibility to ourselves to attend class, do our homework and try our very best on each and every exams.

Responsibilities

Posted by Melita Smith on October 14, 2008

I am not responsible for my homework.  I should be but I am not.  I am really lazy.  Usually I procrastinate and eventually forget to do it.  I should get a planner so I can write down my homework but I do not really have any money at the moment.  When I get some money I will get one.  Then everyday I will look at it at a specified time to check and see if I have something to do.  I should also get my mother to remind me also.  She is really good at nagging me until I do something.  I am also not responsible with money.  It is like a drug to me.  I feel a rush when I have it and powerless when I do not.  When I have it I automatically spend it.  Because of this I try not to carry money on me so it will be less likely that I will spend it.  I am getting better at keeping money though.  I actually saved a large amount of money for two weeks.  I am very proud of myself for that also.  Another thing I am not responsible for is my health.  I eat horribly.  I should eat more regularly but I do not.  Also I only take vitamins every now and then when it should be everyday.  Also I only eat about once a day.  I never eat breakfast.  If I were more responsible with my homework I would more then likely have better grades in my classes.  Also if I took care of my money more responsibly, I would probably be able to save up for a car.  If I ate better then I would probably be healthier.

Responsibilities…

Posted by Hai Tran on October 14, 2008

One thing I have yet to perfect is time management. I occupy myself and distract myself with trivial matters such as games, sports, going out, and sleeping instead of doing my homework or studying for that quiz or test in the class the next day. Of course, I do study and I do my homework, but sometimes I just get lazy and push it until the last minute like many students. I can improve by making time for my personal life on the weekends, and focusing in school 100% during the weekdays. I have to get a new planner, although I had one the first week of school I either misplaced it or someone stole it, who knows, but once I lost it, I knew I was going to put off getting a new one. The more we focus on time management, the more time we have in general for everything we want to do such as going out, time to study for that mid-term, or just relaxing in general.

Another thing I need to improve is my money management. Five days a week I stay at school during lunch, and of those five days, I spend approximately $5.00 on fast food or eating in general. So $25 a week, estimate four weeks, so $100 a month, then about 9 months in school, I’m looking at spending $900.00 on food a year ALONE, not including my gas money and just things in general. I can improve by packing my lunch a sandwich or a salad everyday, or atleast a few days a week so I can cut back on spending money on junk food and fast food, which also makes me gain more weight, so bringing a lunch can improve my health status also. I’ll have to go to wal-mart of the grocery store more, but hey atleast I save money on eating out everyday. The better I am at saving money for food, the better I can be at saving money in general. Say if I wanted a new computer, I can organize myself to save up by not spending money on trivial things I don’t need and then get something I want/need.

Responsibilities

Posted by Marshall Collins on October 14, 2008

One of the main responsibilies that I have as a college student is that I have to stay on top of my work even though there is no true incentive other than it will affect my grade. Then it’s like I assume the role of a parent in that if I’m not doing that well then I have to answer to myself because it’s me that is informed of my performance not my mom. But I know I have the tendency to slack off and become content with whatever I may earn in any given class. One thing that I am doing to fix that is that I am trying to start working ahead of the deadline so that if I do slack a little bit then it will not hurt my grade as bad as it would if I had procrastinated from the start. There is also the responsibility of me showing up to class. Now that I have fewer 1000-level courses I have a problem with showing up to class all together. Not that I am doing bad in those classes it is just that because I do not attend some of the classes, it makes it a little more difficult for me to understand the material as best as I can. To fix this problem I make it an issue to go to class. What I do is that if I miss class that day I take away something I would normaly do that night. By doing this it at the very least reminds me to go to class. All together just by handling the two issues I was talking about, it will make me a more respondsible person for when I eventually graduate from Xavier.

Responsibilities

Posted by Courtney smith on October 13, 2008

As a college student my level of responsibiliy has increased dramatically.  Everything I do is takin care of by me. From my time spent studying to taking care of matters such as financial aid, it is all up to me. When it comes to these areas organization and procrastination are major problems. I sometimes forget deadlnes for projects by not organizing my schedule. I put off doing certain things until the last minute causing me and my work to suffer. I plan to start using an organizer. There are many softwares and plan organizers available. This will help me to keep my list of due dates. I need to start planning my schedule daily so I do not put off my resposiilities. Another thing I need to work on is my communication. If I could get better clarification on some things I would be I would be in a better postion. All these things combined would better improve the completion of my responsibilties. As a college student one of the main things to master is responsibility. The transformation from childhood to adulthood provides you with many opportunities to show how responsible you are. If you are not that responsible you also have ways to improve your responsiblity. Since I am studying to become I doctor I must learn to manage my responsibility. If I procrastinate about something as a doctor it could mean losing someones life. If you do not organize someones paperwork they could end up with the wrong medicine.  These are all thing that with a few tweaks could be managed. I plan to learn to .fix these problems early so i do not struggle later

My Responsibilities

Posted by Faith Hicks on October 13, 2008

As I have been at Xavier, there are a few responsibilities that I have not exactly perfected.  As I have moved on in life, to college, I have to get more organized and more managed, including schoolwork, finances, and work.  My time management usually gives me no problems but there’s been some loopholes.  The responsibility that is number one on my list is my schoolwork, and because of that I will put off my work or finances.  Like at work, (it is a work study job), I will do my homework, even though it says work study, I still feel a little bad when I do my homework, because I feel that I could give them more of my time.  They don’t really get bothered at it but it’s just me.   As for my finances, I have to get use to not going to the atm every time I need something, at first I wasn’t but my mom gave me the okay to.  I myself run through money like, I have to spend it as if it is burning through my hand.  Another responsibility, that was not mentioned, was my family.  Because of these responsibilities, its hard to call them, my mom, really.  I text, but  to a certain extent texting is impersonal, and I wish I could give her more of my time.

I believe that I can handle my situations better.  With my school work, and doing it at work,  I can do more of it in my room instead of not giving my full attention and work ethic to my job.  Also, I can only try to use my debit card for the necessary things, not just things that I think I need.  Finally, with my mom I can call her before I go to sleep and on the weekends when I can give her my undivided attention. When I fix these things I can better my organization of my priorities.  The important things in my life will get my equal attention, and I won’t stress about whether I’m meeting my ex[ectations of being a good student, employee, person, and ost of all a good daughter.

Responsibilites

Posted by Jamaan Kenner on October 13, 2008

As a, “grown man”, I have a plethora of new responsibilites.  The most important are managing my money and managing my time.  My dad gives me “x” amount of dollars every two weeks, and I have to make it last.  I now have the added expense of groceries with my gas expense and all of the other little things that I need to survive.  It’s getting a little hard, because I run out of food so fast and gas is so expensive. I’ve had to keep my car parked during the week because I have to save gas.  To cut my grocery expense, I will have to start eating in the caf more often and buying the store, cheaper, brand of various foods when i go to the grocery store.

Managing my time has been extremely difficult because I’m always so tired from basketball practice.  I haven’t really been studying for any of my classes, and I write all of my papers the night before they’re due.  My grades are suffering due to this.  They aren’t terrible, but they aren’t as good as they should be; they’re not as good as I’m use to.  I will have to use my time more wisely on off days, and start going to bed a little earlier.

Being a more responsible person will make my life as a student athlete so much easier.  I will not have to worry about doing so much work all at one time because my time will be more scheduled.

Responsibilities

Posted by Alexis Johnson on October 13, 2008

I realized over this past month that I have alot more responsibilities. I have more on my plate than the average student in college beacus of my multiple titles. The main three problems that I have is the time management, budgeting, and family matters. I hope that I don’t get overwhelmed, and time will tell.

I am use to balancing my time between work, play, myself, and others; however, it all changed when I left home. My position at home forces me to make arrangements to have a set schedule. Once I got here, I have to be responsible over me more.  My financial situation have to make a change due to the possibilities of hurricanes and family emergencies.  By being that far away also is causing stress because I am mother, father, sister, aunt, and etc. with my siblings and family as a whole. I help keep my little brother’s life on track, maintain my older sister’s sanity, and try to relieve the stress from my aunt. It is the fact that I have to juggle my life with a others that is making me stressful and less responsible. No one told me to take this role, yet I did. Balancing my life, as a whole, is my struggle, but I got this under control.

I have to keep my spending kept at the minimum because I know that my siblings are in school and I want them to be okay. Budgeting is a problem because I am five hours away and do not see what they need. I learned that I do not have to worry about my tuition or other expenses, due to a person I know. If I do my work during the day and early evening, I realized that I have time to gather my thoughts and spend me with a few people and myself. My family knows the time frames that I am less likely to pick up,and this is helping me get better with my responsibilities.

The procrastinating, oversleeping, and discommunicating was holding me back. Now I am moving forward!

Responsibilites

Posted by Phuong Dao on October 13, 2008

Two responsibilities that I have to myself as a student is managing time and keeping my grades up. Recently as a college student I just started learning how to manage myself with my grades in school. It was a bit difficult to keep up with my grades, test, and many homework assignment. I never knew how much of a difference it was from high school to college. Keeping up my grades wasn’t perfect in the beginning because I was so overwhelmed with the stress from the amount of assignments that I had in each class. Now that it’s been a bit of time since college had started, I’m beginning to get the hang of studying on a daily basis. Keeping up my grades would affect my future because grades reflect back on me, and I have to show a good example of myself in order to get into a great medical school.

Time management is also a big obstacle for me because college take up more of my time then I expected it to. Not knowing how to manage my time was a big effect on my grades, but now that I am starting to perfect that too my grades are getting better. If I never learned how to manage something as important as time, how can I show other people that I’m a responsible person? When college accept students into med. school they look at grades, and by that they can tell if I can manage my time correctly. This is an importance for my future because I will have more to handle in my hands and by learning it now prevent the level of stress that I’ll probably encounter.

Responsibilities

Posted by Edward Hill,III on October 13, 2008

Two of the areas I need to be more responsible in are spending money and time management. I’m always on the run to spend money somewhere when I’m bored or mad about something. During the week, I’m always bored after classes because I do a lot of my homework and studying after hours. Because of these actions I tend to go to a fast food restaurant or to a shopping center. Before entering college, I had multiple jobs that’s why my spending habits are bad. Many of times I’ve gone to the store and bought over two or three hundred dollars worth of items and didn’t care because I had a job. I don’t have a job at the moment and it is really hurting my pockets. Managing my time comes in effect when I’m always on the run also. I like to study at night when everyone’s asleep. I find it is more peaceful at this time. But I’m up long hours in the morning studying or doing homework because of this. Instead of going to stores and putting other things before doing my work during the day is one way I can improve. I know it will be hard but I have to manage my time better to do well in college. These changes will help me in the future. Time management will help me to do well in college. When I graduate college with good grades and a high paying job, I will be able to support my spending habits. Until then, I must substitute the things I want for the things I need to do.

My Responsibilities

Posted by Roseanna Desiree Jessup on October 13, 2008

As a college student here at Xavier, I have certain responsibilities that I’m supposed to adhere to. Since I’ve been here, starting with being here this summer for Howard Hughes, I’ve found that I need a lot of work. I have been slacking a bit. I am responsible for my education, for studying, for being on time. I am responsible for me. Honestly, I really don’t have that many responsibilities. Still, I have yet to perfect any of them. The only reason that I can think of for not being responsible in these areas is laziness which leads to procrastinating, which leads to being late. It frustrates me but it’s only my own fault. I really want to get better and I have been working on it. For example, I don’t reallly know how to study but, instead of continuing to let my grades suffer, I met with my advisor and came up with ways to improve my studying habits. I have actually used them, too. I’m kind of proud of myself. I have decided that I just need to take time and do what I have to do before anything else. As for managing my money, I’ve been working on that to. I don’t have a job so I still get money from my parents. They treat me well and I never have to want for anything but, I have been working on a budget. Even though my parents always make sure I have money, I don’t want to just spend it on anything. I spend it on what I need. Being more responsible in these areas will make my life less frustrating and will allow me to reach my full potential.

Responsibilities

Posted by Freddie Williams on October 12, 2008

One responsibility that I know I have not perfected is my responsibility a a student. I can say that I have not perfected this because I have not reached the ultimate level of my education yet. I must began to take my education much more seriously and start studying more if I plan on making it in medical school. If I do become more responsible in this area of my life my life will in return improve for I will demand a great future for myself. Another responsibility that I have not completely fulfilled is my responsibility as a son. I am not responsible as a son because I am sure I am not doing something that my parents really want me to be doing. Like I am sure that they would rather me be somewhere studying on sunday night instead of getting ready to out to the club or to Bourbon Street. In order to fix this I must began to prioritize and figure out what I really feel are the most important things in my life which would probably be what my parents feel are most important too. By improving on this I will be able to see that the progress of my life should speed up and this my life will be in return better than it was. This just goes to show that when one puts there responsibilities first and does what he or she needs to do first their life is just so much better.

It seems as though as for as longs as I can remember I have had trouble with study habits and time management. Being that I am a college student now I kinda have to be a pro in studying and managing my time.  If I don’t improve on these things it can only lead to failure.

There are many things that I am doing to improve and do better with these responsibilities. To help with time management I went and bought a planner.I pretty much carry my planner everywhere I go. I write down my homework, important dates, appointments, etc. It really helps me remember the things that I have to do. Without it I begin to feel lost. Another responsibility that I have trouble with is my study habits. When teachers tell me that I have a test on Friday I usually wont study until either Wednesday or Thurday. Even then if I do study it will be for about ten minutes. I usually procrasinate when it comes to studying for a quiz or a test. To improve I set time out for each subject to go over notes from the class and most time I re-write my notes to clear up all the abbreviations and reinforce what was covered in class. Also te help study I make flash cards to help me remember different definitions and formulas.

I will do alot to make sure I become successful at managing my time and to have better study habits. If I have a test Monday morning that means that I won’t go out sunday night. Or on Monday, if I’m told there is a test on Friday, then I need to begin studying on Monday and not waiting. To make sure I manage my time I always take time to reflect on the day and what’s ahead of me and make sure I write it down.  Doing well in managing my time and creating better study habits will make me more successful in many different aspects of my life. Not just school, but work as well. It will make me more organized also.

responsibilities…

Posted by Rachael Flores on October 12, 2008

My main responsibility is to complete my education so I can provide the life for my son which he deserves. To complete my education, my responsibilities are to perfect my time management and study habits, which are components of self-discipline. I am starting to realize that outside of school I really cannot have a life. Any extra time should be used to do the never-ending homework that I have, not to watch a show on television. My time-managing inabilities really take a toll on the quality of education that am receiving. I am trying to discipline myself more to make sure that I leave my house on time to make it to school a little bit early. That is my main concern; because I live in Baton Rouge, it really makes a difference at what time I leave. When I get to school late, sometimes I just don’t go in because I don’t want to interrupt the class.  Because my time-management skills are so bad, it does not matter what time I get up, I could still be late. A key part to my lack of skills is due to Procrastination ( with a capital P). In order to reverse this vicious cycle, I need to make new habits. I will start by writing down a schedule and sticking to it, not putting everything off for later. I have also learned that if I make a plan to do a few pages/sections of homework a night, it can be finished on time without rushing to do everything at the last minute and it feels good to be able to do it that way. If I do not finish school, I will spend the rest of my life wondering what it would’ve been like.

I think to be a young adult in this day and age I am pretty responsible. I didn’t always have someone to check my homework or even to make sure it was done, so in essence I have been responsible for my success or failure since I was in middle school. Not only has this made the transition from high school to college that much easier, but I think I am that much more mature for it. I don’t dare to say that I am perfect or never irresponsible, but when you ask for three areas of irresponsibility, there aren’t many that come to mind. As a young adult, I make plenty of mistakes, but I think that is a human condition. Everything that I do isn’t the right thing but I take responsibility for my mistakes because at one point they were choices. I know this isn’t what you’re asking for, but either I am misunderstanding the prompt or maybe this is just a different answer. I guess it would help if I supported my viewpoint. So let’s take three assumed areas of irresponsibility a young adult would have: not completing homework, skipping class, and time management. I always complete my homework. I haven’t ignorantly missed an assignment since I was in middle school. What do you mean by ignorantly? This would be the use of the classic excuse, “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t hear it.” If I have ever missed an assignment it was a conscious choice to do so. Even if I were to miss one, I would still take responsibility. Again, it was a choice. I don’t skip class. Whereas some of my peers may see it as “getting over,” I see it as wasting my time and money. I have no inclination whatsoever to “have fun” at the expense of my education. I don’t claim to have it all figured out, but I do have my priorities straightened in a manner that assures my success. As far as time management goes, I don’t have it down perfectly, but I think I am steadily improving. It hasn’t nor do I think it ever will get to the point where I am inclined to spend every minute of every night with my head in a book, but I do prioritize my time so that it is used wisely. I don’t know what else there is.

Week 7: Responsibilities

Posted by Mike Tran on October 12, 2008

As a college student, I have new responsibilities now than when I was in high school. In high school, I was babied by my high school teachers. Constantly reminding me to finish this or don’t forget that. Also my friends would help me do my homework, and even in some cases I would bride them. Now, that I’m in college things are way much different. I learned that one of my biggest responsibilities to improve on is to be more independent on my own work. I am also a big procrastinator. During my high school years, I would wait until the last minute to do everything. Even when I know that my day would be full of things that are due the next day.

I think because of my laziness, I am not on top of my school work. Lately, I have seen myslef improved. For the first time since elementary school, I own a planner. Time managment is a big thing in college, and a planner is the perfect thing to have. So far I have been more independent towards myslef. Sometimes I ask for help, but nomore favors coming out of me anymore.

Now that I have a planner, it made life a little easier. It helps you split your time equally and even have a break here and there. Keeps you from forgetting to do assignments, and helps you stay organize. Being independent is really exciting to me. I’m used to help, but when i figure it out by myslef  feels great like  I  won the jackpot.

So far I am improving my skills and plan on improving in more responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Posted by Kirsten Smith on October 12, 2008

As a college student I know three areas of responsibilities I need to work on: time management, study skills, and money management. Managing my time seems to be one of the biggest problems I have. I need to prioritize what is more important. I need to spend more time on my reading, homework, and studying before I try to participate in fun activities. I also need to go to bed at a decent hour so I can get up for breakfast and class on time and not have to rush. I need to improve my study skills and also work on not being a procrastinator. I will have to do my assignments before the day they are actually due so I won’t be stressing out trying to get it finished on time. When doing my work I need to have the television off and not be answering text messages and phone calls. I need to use my planner to write down all of my assignments and when things are due so I won’t have a reason to forget about something. Managing my money is also another problem. I tend to order food a lot or end up at the mall buying things I don’t even need. To solve this problem I need to set a budget for myself for how much I can spend a month before I stop getting money in my account. If I become more responsible in these areas then it will help me when I get a job. I want to be a pharmacist and having the problems I do now will not help me in the long run. I can’t show up to work late or forget an important document I might have to do. I would have to stay on top of my duties because there will be people that are depending on me to do so. I will start correcting these problems now so that they won’t even be a problem for me in the future.

Responsibilities

Posted by Bechi Okwumabua on October 12, 2008

First and foremost, I need to be more responsible with my emotions. I need to be able to focus better instead of being distracted by all the crap that comes in and out of my life. In the end, I will be the one who will suffer if I do not learn to ignore the outside distractions and focus on what I am in school for. These people around me that make me upset sometimes, they aren’t going to care whether or not I graduate. They aren’t going to care whether or not I achieve what I’m trying to do. I don’t have to make best friends with everybody I see walking around here. And if I just paid more attention to myself maybe it would be easier for me to excel. Those times when I’m in class trying to figure out how to make things better between my “new”friends and stuff… that is acutally a waist of my time. If people enjoy my company and I enjoy theirs that is all good and well. But the second that I start getting frustrated with myself and blaming myself for relationship problems between my girlfriends and my so-called boyfriend, everything else is affected. My schoolwork is affected. My temper becomes short and my whole attitude changes. It just doesn’t make sense. And it is definitely not worth it. Nobody in this world is worth me ruining my future for. I may sound selfish but I’m here on earth living for me. If I don’t get myself together there is absolutely no chance of me ever helping anyone else, and that is just the truth. I need to focus on what is the most important.

Secondly, I need to work on my time management, just like many others have already said. Time management, as a basketball player trying to keep a 4.0, is very important. Practice takes up a whole lot of time, therefore,I can’t do a whole lot of extra stuff like students that aren’t involved in others activities besides their school work. Anybody who participates on a team or a club or, some organization of that nature, know that you have to show committment to each program. I have a repsonsibilty to put forth a full effort in all programs that I’m involved in. Otherwise, I have  no point in waisting my time attending the meetings and practices. My mother always told me not to stretch myself to thin. She said that if i did this, I would never become great at anything. I would just be good at a lot, and not isn’t that significant. So, I have to manage my time in order to do everything to the best of my ability. I have to stay focused and disciplined. Or else, I’ll just be shooting myself in my own foot.

Responsibility

Posted by Lamoyne Taylor on October 12, 2008

One area that i feel that is a level of responsibilty that need to be perfected is studying.  I always have good intentions of studying and I even call a study group, but when I leave I dont remember anything.  It seem as if I learn more when i am working by myself than when I am in a study group.  The second thing I need to perfect is time mangement.  I think that my life is basically complicated.  The hours of the day never seem to be long enough to get everything done. At night, i stay up and study until my body collapse on the bed.  I wake up in the morning; go from classes to classes, take a nap, and get up and study.  When it comes to studying, I think that I could be involved in a group that i don’t know, so that maybe i can pay attention more. When it comes to my time issue, i could organize my life and go by a schedule.  To be more responsible, I as long as other have to realize what is important.  i have to realize what i really want out of life, and this along should change me.  All i know is that I will do everything that it takes to learn, cause i am desperate for knowledge.  I need to learn, and thats how I really feel.  Being more responsible will affect my life in a good way.  I am a young man now, so my parent can’t handle my situations anymore.  By being more responsible now, I am getting myself prepared for life and ready for the future ahead of me.

‘Wk 7: Responsibilities’

Posted by whochrisvu on October 12, 2008

Everybody is not perfect and that definitely includes me.  Two areas that I need some work on are time responsibility (just like every one who posted already…) and study skills.  We’re already several weeks into college, and I think that I’m in high school mode still.  In high school, I slacked off and still managed to get good grades.  I was able to procrastinate and cram at the last minute and pass.  Even if I got a B or C on a test, I knew that several more tests were to come and help raise my grade, but this is completely different in college.  In college, I may get only one or two tests and one of those may be the final exam.  If I mess up on that one test, that may be it.

My first problem, time management could use some improving.  As already said, I procrastinate… a lot.  I’ll do my homework the day it’s due, or wait until the night before to type up essays.  Even right now I procrastinated by typing this blog two hours before it’s due.  I kinda blame my schedule, since I have a three hour break almost every day, but ultimately I can only blame myself.  I know that I should take the time I have every night and work slowly and diligently on my work.  The gift of the three hour break should be used to double check my work or seek help for any unanswered questions from teachers or friends.  Learning to be more responsible with time management will help relieve a lot of the stress I have in life, and make things easier knowing that I can break down assignments and work little by little each day.

My second problem is my study habit.  I have always crammed the night before even since grade school.  It’s always worked then but now it’s just not going to cut it.  Considering college level tests may include something like eight chapter from the textbook, an all nighter may not be sufficient. Actually, I know it’s not enough considering I goofed up on one or two midterms.  I’ve always been told to study a little every day so that when it comes time for the test, studying will basically be a review.  I always ignored that piece of advice since I’ve been doing just fine cramming the material. Now is the time to change that habit.  Studying my notes every day, probably during my break, will prove to be very useful in keeping up with the college material.  This will help in the future when higher level and more demanding classes will start piling material into single classes.  I know that I can break down the studying into small sessions and be ready for anything.

Responsbilitess

Posted by Hung Le on October 12, 2008

As a freshman in college, its hard balancing all my responsibilities. The adjustment from high school to college is still very new. First and foremost, I know that I have to work on prioritizing my classes, focusing on the subject due tomorrow versus the assignment due next week. For example, I usually pick the easy assignments first and leave the hard one to the eleven hour to start but, all that has to change. Additionally, I need to develop a better studying method, I procrastinate way to often. I constantly tell myself I need to finish my essay by midnight I usually don’t start till ten. I finally came up with a solution of finding a place that is quite. In fact by simple going to the library I feel as though I can concentrate and accomplish more homework. To emphasize, the most important tactic I need to perfect is getting enough sleep. It’s extremely difficult to sleep with all the distractions. To illustrate, I regularly watch television shows such as, Spongebob Squarepants, House, and Grays Anatomy, rather than study for chemistry.

The main reason why I haven’t mastered these defects is because of the freedom I have obtain. Its not rocket science, when one lives at home they must abide the their parents rules and regulations. College is a entirely different ballpark, for once I am the adult making my own decisions. Besides, Ray Charles, can see that I’m abusing my privileges, this assignment is a wake call I desperately needed. After seeing my grades, I had a change of heart I’m going to work on all these imperfections in my studying method and hopefully, my grade will be a reflection of my efforts.

Three areas of improvement I need to work on is time management, study skills, and money management. For time management I need much improvement. Usually after class instead of going over the material I just covered I usually just go to sleep and do all the nessecary homework for the next day. For study skills, Im still in the high school phase where I just cram before the test which I found out it really doesnt help that much like it did in high school. For money management, just spending a little too much. Fast food and wings put a hole in my pockets. To improve in time management, I could make a schedule to follow daily or throughout the week to ensure im being productive. I could do alot more studying and less sleeping for study skills and not spending so much money and just save it for when I really need it would probably help me out alot. Being more responsible for time management will help me establish a long built in foundation for future purposes which will help me out greatly. For study skills, improvement would help me be more relaxed and not stressful and very prepared for any test or quizzes. Money management will help me out greatly in the future for when I have that multi-million dollar check in my hand and not spending it all in a day or two. =)) All these are important steps for the future and for med school and becoming a pediatrician one day. Ill try to change my ways the best I can to benefit me out to the fulliest

THE RESPONSIBLE ME:-)

Posted by Jacinda Whitley on October 12, 2008

The transition from high school to college has not been that hard. I think I am a pretty responsible person, but there are a few areas where I need work. For example, time-management, money-management, and taking care of business.

When it comes to time-management, I tend to procrastinate longer than I should. If I don’t do the assignment when it’s assigned or shortly after, I might forget. For example, blogging. I know it’s something I have to do every week, but I get caught up in so many other things that are due during the week I almost forget about the blog. i am not terrible with time management; I do turn in everything on time, but I stress myself the night before trying to finish sometimes. I can improve this problem by doing assignments earlier. If I break it down and do some everyday, I can finish in time, stress free. By correcting this problem I would also have time to go back, double check my work and perfect it. I am already learning how to manage my time better being that I’ve had mid-terms back to back. You have to learn how to study for everything within time given. I will do whatever it take to perfect my time-management skills. Balance is a very  important aspect of college.

Also my money-management skills can bettered. I am not a big spender but when it comes to shopping I’m not great with bargains. I know my mom is always looking at the price and comparing. I don’t do that as often as I should. I also need to adjust my priorities more when I shop. I’ll buy a new shirt and some jewelry before I buy food for my dorm room, which is not good. There are many ways I am trying to correct this problem. I am putting myself on a shopping diet and setting a budget up for my grocery spending. I also think if I get a job this problem will easily be corrected because I don’t like spending my own money.:-)

Lastly, the hardest part of the part of this transition was handling business on my own. I was always so use to my mom making flight arrangement and talking to financial aid for me. Now I am signing papers, networking, and establishing myself here on my own. Though I have been doing this for a while now, I am not perfect at it yet. My shyness gets in the way when I’m talking to someone or need information about loans, etc. This is the biggest lesson you have to learn in college. This is the breaking point from your parents; where we become adults. In order to become a better adult I try my hardest not to call my mom about every little thing and just learn from the decisions I make. I am also taking care of my own financial aid business.

All these skills that I need to work on are skills that I will have to perfect in the future in order to be on top. You can’t show up late to a job interview or forget to do a report, etc. You have to stay on top of all your responsibilities when people are counting on you. How responsible I am now will determine how responsible I will be as a doctor which is a huge responsibility. I know that within the next few years at Xavier I will have no problems wit my responsibilities because I am correcting them now.

Responsibilites!!!!!!

Posted by Ty'Sha Jarrow on October 12, 2008

Nothing or no one is ever going to be perfect, but I must say school is a major responsibility I must work on. I’ve always been on top of my school work, and now I feel like I’m shorting myself.  I have to realize I’m in a more different and complex environment now. Two things that I must say I have to work on is time management and becoming more focus. I don’t really sit down an plan out what I have to do. I just handle them as they come, which sometimes causes me to do things at the last minute because I forget. For example this blog that I’m just writing the day it’s due. I also don’t study like I should. I always made excellent grades in high school, but I never really studied. Things are different now, it doesn’t work like that and it’s time for me to realize that. I don’t focus on my work an studies like I should. I can improve and be more responsible by just taking my time on doing what I have to do, and do them ahead of time. I can’t say sit here an say i’m going to get a planner because I know I won’t look at it. To be more responsible, I think I should try a planner and things will most likely work out better. I also need to fix my attention span. I tend to get bored when things aren’t interested, and I drift off. I also need to learn to focus better so that I can take better notes and become successful. I must say I’m going to have to talk less and study more. I believe this can help my study skills, which can help my grades improve. I should also try sitting in the front of the class that way I can focus and understand better. I think being more responisible and taking action in improving these two things will better my future. Time management is an important factor in becoming successful. If you can’t mangage your time no one is going to want you to work for them, or nothing is going to ever get done in your area of study, if you can’t manage your time. Focusing is also important. You can’t function if you can’t focus. I can’t remember what medicine I have to give a patient, if I can’t focus on what their problem is. So, I believe time management and focusing are two major issues I have to work on on becoming more responsible.

Christina’s Responsibilities

Posted by Christina Houston on October 12, 2008

We have been enrolled at Xavier University for approximately seven weeks, and I have yet to perfect my study habits and my time management skills.  I believe that I will acquire these skills as time goes on, but as of now, there are not two of my strongest assets.  My study habits and time management skills are satisfactory to me right now, but I know that when I get ready to take upper level courses, I will need these skills to be perfect, especially once I enter into medical school.

Procrastination is the main reason why I am not being responsible in these areas.  I always think that I can do an assignment later even though I am not doing anything right then.  It seems as if everything is due during the same day, and I end up trying to work on my assignments the night before.  I rather play games on the computer, socialize with my friends, or watch television.

Even though I am not perfect in these areas yet, I am taking the necessary steps to better me in these areas.  I have realized by keeping a planner and writing all my assignments down, I can visually see what I need to do, so I can get those things done ahead of time.  Also, by using the planner I have noticed how much time I actually have in the day to do my assigned work.  I have realized that I waste a lot of my time doing unnecessary things.

Becoming more responsible in each of these areas is essential in my chosen career path.  I want to become a doctor, and I know that these skills are vital when attending medical school.  If these are not acquired then I could fall behind in my schoolwork and that will not be good.

Responsibilty & ME!

Posted by Erin Gardner on October 12, 2008

First and foremost, time management is a problem for me whether I’m at school or at home.  I’ve always been one to procrastinate and I never made an attempt to change because I eventually get the task done, not to mention, some of my best school work has come from last minute inspiration. J Nevertheless, that doesn’t make it right for me wait to “the last millisecond,” as my mother often puts it, to get things done.  For the most part I sit home eating or catching up on beauty sleep, so there is really no need for me to procrastinate because I have a surplus of time (I just don’t use it wisely).  Furthermore, I know that if I were to handle business ahead of time, I would have more time to relax without stressing in the back of my mind about approaching deadlines.  Besides, why be my own enemy and self-inflict stress; that can’t be too healthy.

Another area that I slack in is studying.  As far as study habits go, I have none.  I’ve never actually studied the “correct way,” well, the way the books and teachers say is correct.  I usually memorize material for the time being, instead of studying to learn, so that it sticks forever.  I’m sure that my habit of cramming before tests doesn’t exactly aid in the learning process either.

Overall, both of my problem areas work hand in hand.  If I would simply all that snacking and napping time to properly review material throughout the week, I would definitely alleviate stress and acquire more sleep which can also help to ameliorate my retention of the materials overall.  In addition to improving my personal qualities by being more responsible in these areas, I can give others confidence in my ability to be of assistance.  Although I am a reliable person, it doesn’t comfort people to know that I procrastinate.  Therefore, if I can handle my own business in a proper and timely fashion, I can lend a helping hand to others without them having a doubt about me getting the job done.

responsiblities.

Posted by Melinda Williams on October 12, 2008

I know as a student I haven’t perfected studying, time management and my social life. For me studying and time management are interrelated because I procrastinate or wait until the last minute. Therefore, I put off studying and I know that if i managed my time properly this would not happen. Time management is for me difficult though because I have so much to do. But only 24 hours to complete everything and frankly that is not enough time. I can improve this by becoming more organized and attempting to get everything done in an orderly fashion.  Also, if remain focused on my priorities, I know that I would be able to get done whatever I need to. By doing this I will become more responsible and a better student. I just have to change my ways and become more productive. For example, I would start my chemistry modules earlier instead trying to finish it the night before my drill.

I have not perfected maintaining my social life and school work because sometimes I tend to put my social life before school. I like going out with friends and enjoying myself but I realize that going out needs to take the back burner because school is my main focus. I have to use my weekends to study instead of going to parties. For me, responsibilities as a student are becoming more difficult everyday. Especially since I’m in college teachers expect more from students. I’ve learned that when you take on responsibilites in school, they help shape other areas like your family and work life.

Responsibilities

Posted by Morgan Weber on October 12, 2008

Two responsibilities I have not yet perfected as a student are starting my work early and balancing my non- academic life.  The cause of me procrastinating is my want to just relax.  Since I know there are many more years of school in my future, I want to do my school work in a calm, easy manner.  Therefore, I end up not starting my school work early enough or doing very little ahead of time.  To improve, I can plan when I will work on a certain subject, and I can force myself to start my work early.  Also, thinking positively rather than thinking negativly about the subject matter will help me improve my procrastination.  The cause of me not balancing my non academic life well is that I tend to underestimate or overestimate my school work.  Either I study too hard and tire myself out ahead of time, or I start too late and find out I need to spend a lot of time on the matter.  To help me improve, I can once again turn to planning ahead.  I have to keep in mind, that no matter how easy the work may seem to be, I must start my work early to prevent from being overwhelmed.

The measures I can take to be more responsible is to write everything down and discipline myself in doing my work early.  This includes writing in my daily planner more and setting time each day to work on school work.

To be more responsible in these areas will change my life drastically.  First, I will be less stressed and, therefore, more care free.  Second, I will be able to go dancing school more than once a week, which is a big stretch from my previous 6 days a week from previous years.  Third, I will be able to work out my arms, which I have been too tired to do these past couple of weeks.  In conclusion, I think I will have more time to spend on myself and the people around me.

My ReSpOnSiBiLiTiEs

Posted by Nia Weber on October 12, 2008

Two responsibilities that I have not perfected as a student are procrastination and independence. Procrastination has always been an issue for me. Although I tend to wait to the last minute to complete assignments, I seem to usually receive a good grade. This is good in the sense that I get the work done and receive a passing grade for the work, but I put myself under a lot of stress and pressure when doing this. Procrastination makes me stay up very late the night before the assignments are due, therefore, limiting my time for rest at night. To improve in this area I can spend a little time on my assignments, papers, homework, and/or projects each day, depending on what it is, so that I am not bogged down with too much work at one time. When I do not procrastinate I do not feel rushed or overwhelmed while doing my work and I witness how much less I am overwhelmed with stress.

Independence is also an issue I need to perfect as a student. For my entire life I have been dependent on my mother to take care of many responsibilities for me, whether they be school related or family matters such as chores.  Living on campus is definitely a good thing for me because it forces me to be more responsible for myself. Although I still call my mother to do some things for me, I am starting to hear from her, “That is your responsibility. Do it yourself.” Once again this forces me to be more responsible for things I need to be responsible for handling on my own. At times I do not always want to be responsible for myself because I get lazy sometimes and I am so used to my mother taking care of the situations for me. However, I know that I must be more responsible for myself because that is a part of growing up and a part of life itself.

Responsibilities

Posted by Sarah Wilson on October 12, 2008

As a student my responsibilities is to do good in school. To have a great point average so I can get into a awesome medicalschool in the future. I always had a responsibility. I had to keep my grades up since I can remember. To succeed in life you have to work hard and study for what you in life. Nothing is free or easy.

I feel like college is a challenge to me. I have to study more than I would regularly in my life. College is no joke it’s the real deal. I want my grades to improve more then what it is now. It’s not bad but it can be better than that. I see myself improving by studying more and going to tutoring sessions if I need them in the future.  Life is not easy college is definitely not easy. So college is not easy either.

I have to take my time to do my work and sit down and try to understand what I don’t know about the subject. I would ask my teachers more questions in class if needed help.

I would have to change my whole routine in my life to succeed in school. I would have more time to study then of doing nothing. I would study with other students. Everyone needs help in their life in college especially. I would be more focus on my work then anything else on my mind. I would succeed to get into medical school in the future and I will have a good grade point average before I graduate.
