Xavier and Me

Posted by maj0615 on October 31, 2008

First, I am a member of the Xavier University community. We all have something in common which is trying to better ourselves by continuing our education. We’re all determined beings or we wouldn’t be facing the obstacles that we do in college. Our school is one big community, whether we know all of our peers or not. I am on the newspaper staff, so that is also my community. Although it is slightly smaller, we all are out to accomplish the same goal. My department, the Communications Department, would be considered a community. We all have an interest in learning about public relations, speech, print journalism, and the rest of the parts of communication.

My Mass Communication community has to be one of my favorite communities. Although I’m still young and new to all of this, I feel that I’m learning quickly. I chose to be part of this particular community because of my love for writing. Instead of playing with dolls or sitting in front of the television as a child, I would be in my own world reading and writing. I had my mind made up at the age of twelve that I would become a journalist. I became interested in sports writing and I honestly believe that I will become a very successful sports journalist.

This community is important because we take care of each other. There are many opportunities offered to us and networking, in my opinion, has been great. I’ve met a lot of people that can get me on the right track. It’s definitely a very important community.

I am currently just apart of New Orleans and an Xavier student right now. The rules that I follow is with my friends and with them there are no rules the skys the limit. We basically just hang out and chill the most we do is might get involed wit the community every now and again. The values we take out of everyday life is dont get stuck on small things just keep moving forward. Or if someone is down talking you then prove them wrong, dont ever let someone get you down thats what we like to call a hater. A hater is someone that doesnt like what you do they always want to see you fall on your face. They never want to see you go far so we step on them by proving them wrong. Another thing is we respect the people that was put her before us they’re the ones that we respect. mainly becuase they know the ropes the ups and downs. We set our own path with whatever we do we must stand out in a crowd. The thing we value is the things we usually cant get to often like oppurtunity’s we make the best of them at all times. Even through the good and the bad we smile and keep the real in us and fakes could take a walk off a cliff for all we care.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Famous Washington on October 5, 2008

There are several communities which I belong to. First off I belong to the Xavier community which i became a part of when i decided to attend Xavier. Within the Xavier community i also belong to the freshmen community, the St. Michael dorm community, and the chemistry pre-pharmacy community. Beiing a part of these communities makes me feel like I am not alone I feel as if i am a part of a larger group of individuals who look out for one anothers well-being.  I feel that being a part of these communities is one of the main advantages that college gives you. While in college you form bonds and friendships that last you a lifetime and can benfit you throughout life and your professional career.

I am currently apart of the KD Dorm 6th floor chapter, and I am also apart of the pom squad. I plan on becoming a voluteer with the grandparents. I tried out to become apart of the Xavier University Pom Squad. Try outs consisted of strecthes and learning a few routines. I stay in the KD Dorm on the 6th floor. I love to dance and thats why I was interested in the pom sqaud also. Another thing that interested me was the fact that it is a different type of dance. I wanted to do something new. KD Dorm is a community I am apart of because thats where i currently reside. Therefore it required no intrest. It is just somewhere to temporarily call home. A major value of the pom squad is to promote school sprit. Its just like a family. You have to be able to dance and have technique. KD Dorm is like a family but it is really just a place to stay. I wouldn’t say there were any values. I just remembered that my friends and I are a family of our own. We are there for one another that can be considered a value that we have. Its so nice to have somebody to go to when you are feeling down and out. Its great to have a few people to depend on when you need some body to talk to and conifide in. Being apart of something helps me ajust better to new things.

Xavier And Me

Posted by tammar williams on September 28, 2008

I am a part of many different communities, and there are probably to many to even list. Some examples of communities that I am a member of is that I am a member of the African American community, I am a member of the high school ’08 graduates, I am a member of the female community, and recently I became a member of the Xavier freshman community. I guess there are some communities that I would like to be a part of. I would like to be a part of the straight A’s community ( hey, I like good grades. So sue me). I would like to be apart of Xavier’s graduating class of 2012 meaning I wanna graduate on time, and eventually I would like to be a part of the community of successful physicians. These communities are of particular interest to me because they are my goals. They are what I’ve been wanting to do for most of my life, and I feel that if I finally become a part of those communities that I have reached some of my most important goals in life. In that I feel that I would reach a higher level of pride in myself, but still keep my humility remembering all that I had to go through to finally get to where I want to be. I think that the guidelines, rules, values, etc. of the communities that I would like to enter into can be summed up in a few words: Work hard, of course, be honest, be true to others and yourself, and finally be humble.

I belong to several communities, and probably am not aware of some things that could be considered a community. The communitites that I recently became a part of are the freshman and Xavier communities. I am a part of the African-American community. Also all of the pre-pharmacy students are a part of a community. I am a part of my neighborhood and church community. I would like to become a part of the tennis community, but I would have to practice a lot more before I could play at the college level. I was a cheerleader my junior and senior years of high school so I might try to be a part of the cheerleading community. I would also like to be a part of the chemistry club community because I am a pre-pharmacy major. I would like to become a member of the community that helps children in community service projects that we have throughout the year. I may try to join a sorority next year because I have always dreamed of pledging. In order to become a part of these communities I would have to work hard in school and keep my grades up to get into pharmacy school so I can become a pharmaist one day. I would have to believe in myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. I have four years to think about what communities I would like to be a part of and it may be some that I never even thought about and might find interesting to join.

IAM A PART OF THE FRESHMAN COMMUNITY. I JUST STARTED XAVIER UNIVERSITY AND RIGHT NOW IAM JUST ADJUSTING TO THE COMMUNITY. BUT AS ME BEING APART OF THE FRESHMAN COMMUNITY I REALLY LIKE IT. WHEN I FIRST CAME TO XAVIER I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE KIND OF BORING BUT AS I SEE ALL OF THE FRESHMAN COMMUNITY IS OKAY SO FAR. BEING APART OF A COMMUNITY INQUIRES INTELLIGENCE, MORALS, AND ENTHUSE. I WANT TO BECOME APART OF THE COMMUNITY WHO IS LEADING ME RIGHT. I WANT TO BECOME MORE ADVANCED THEN WHAT IAM ALREADY IN. I WANT TO OVERCOME THE OBSTACLES OF SAYING I CANT DO IT, AND IT IS HARD WORK. I WANT SOMEONE TO HELP ME BE MORE MINDFUL IN WHAT IAM DOING. XAVIER IS A CHALLENGE BUT I WANT SOMEONE TO HELP MAKE ME BETTER MY OWN PERSONAL COMMUNITY OF NOT LACKING IN SCHOOL AND MAKE GOOD GRADES. TO ENTER THIS COMMUNITY I PLAN TO STUDY BETTER, I PLAN TO PUT MY WORK FIRST AND ALL THAT OTHER STUFF ASIDE SO I CAN ACHIEVE AND HAVE A GOOD GRADE POINT AVERAGE TO CONTINUE AS A XAVIERITE. IT INTEREST ME BECAUSE IT WILL SHOW ME THE WAY TO BE A HARDWORKING PERSON IN THE FUTURE. IT WILL SHOW ME NOT TO GIVE UP AND TAKE PART OF EVERYTHING THAT I WILL DO IN LIFE AS BECOMING A PEDIATRICIAN. THE RULE OF THESE GROUPS ARE TO INTAKE THE SUCCESS OF PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO WHAT I DO, AND TO BE MORE MINDFUL OF WHAT IAM GETTING INTO RATHER NOT WORRYING ABOUT IT. HAVING THIS GROUP WILL SHOW ME THE DO’S AND OUTS.

When I first came to Xavier it was going to be a new experince for me. I had in my mind that it was not going to be nothing like high school. When I first came to orientation I seen people that I went to elementary school with. I am orginal from New Orleans LA. l lived in the eastern community for fifthteen years until, I  was displaced in Columbia Ms of 2005 because of hurricane Katrina. And now I am back home, so coming to Xavier was a big and new experince for me. I have always wanted to attend Xavier because of the culture, hertiage and the community cause i can relate to this type of enviroment. When I started school things were kind of crazy. I have never seen so many people that are interested in getting an good ecucation like me. Everyone that you pass always have a smile on there face and it is like they always have good day at school. Xavier has alot to offer me like being in any type of organizations and a education. Also by being a Catholic school and making that, I am Catholic it pushes me to get involve in the Catholic community and become more active and go to church more often than I do. Xavier has also improved my people and teamwork skills because in the beginning I didnt know how to come and ask people for help i always thought that I can do it by myself. In the end I jus swalloed my pride and got help and till this day that is how I got all my friends. So Xavier showed me that they are here to help and not put me down. I’m proud to say that I am XULA student.

The communities that I am currently involved with are the alumni community of my high school which is Mc Donogh35 Sr. High School, the freshmen community at Xavier, the pre- vet club, and my local neighborhood. I am involved with the alumni community with my high school because I still attend events that the school have and I also help to improve and better the school.  I am still a local resident of New Orleans which makes it easy for me to give back to the school that set the foundation for me. I am also a part of the freshmen community at Xavier University. The entire freshmen class is a community within a community because we come together as one and make major decisions about our future. The pre- vet club is another community I belong to because we share our ideas, decisions and thoughts about animals and the of veterinary medicine. We meet up as a group in particular place  and discuss our plans to help animals. We decide on different fund raisers we should have to help us help the animals in need. The last community I am in is my local nneighborhood. The community I live in helps each other. We fought with the city of New Orleans to allow us to come back to our homes. We stood together as one. The community I will love to be a part of is the art club. I chose the art club because I love to express my feeling and thoughts. What I would do to enter this community is find out what I need to know, have and do to enter. I would find out who is the person in charge and find out the process.

Being a part of a community doesn’t unnecessarily means to be a apart of a club. Being a part of a community can mean being a part of a group of people with the same interest, race, school, religion and so on. With that said, I am apart of the Vietnamese community. I am also apart of the Xavier University community and the pre-med major community. The type of community I want to be in is the Xavier alumni community and the pre-pharm. I’m willing to work hard and break my habits of procrastination to enter into these communities. Being a part of the Xavier alumni to me is a great importance because it’s an honor and a great achievement. Being a part of the Xavier alumni isn’t like being a part of another university alumni, you achieved something other than education. I want to be apart of the pre-pharm community because their way of life suits my personality better than the pre-med. Having a major in pre-pharm I can interact more personally with the patients and handle less stress than pre-med field. With pre-pharm I can live my life a little bit easier. Also, having a job providing medicine to help people around your community is a great feeling to have. The guidelines of being an Xavier alumni is to not just have an education but to build your character. You have to have do good for others and learning more than just education. For pre-pharm the guidelines is to care for you patients and have a passion for it. You have to be well educated and a well rounded person.

I am apart of many diffenent communities.  One particular commuinty that I am apart of is the African Americn community. Being apart of the African American has its negative and positive points. Now this is a very critical time for not only blacks but for people of all races. For the first time in Presidential history an African American male is the has a great chance to become the president of the U.S. I think that Senator Obama serves as a huge insparation for young African American males like myself. This is a huge accomplishment for the entire race. Another community that i belong to is the xavier community. I feel that Xavier is a big family. Everyone here has respect for themselves and others. Just being apart of this community has changed my life.

Me and Xavier

Posted by Rachael Flores on September 23, 2008

I have come to realize that I am a member of many different communites, some of which I may not have thought of yet. Obviously one of those communities would be the Xavier freshman community. Also, I do belong to a church community; it is a spanish/bilingual pentecostal church. I do not agree with the dress-code, though…so maybe I belong to a different church community that I haven’t found yet. Another community I belong to is the community of parents. If you are not a member of that community, you really have noo idea what goes on in there. The community that I live in is Baton Rouge, if you can call Baton Rouge a community.

I am aiming to become a member of the Pharmacy School community. I am willing to work hard and do whatever it takes to get in. It is of interest to me because I plan to become a pharmacist someday, at which time I will become a member of the pharmacist community. To get into this particular community, you have to work hard and get good grades throughout two years of pre-pharmacy courses.

I am also hoping to make my way, eventually, into a community of other Baton Rougean Xavierites. I am not sure how that will happen, but I am sure that God will provide a way. I am interested in joining this prospective community so I will not have to make this killer drive everyday by myself. The criteria for joining this community would be to be from Baton Rouge, to be really sick of gas prices and the travel time and to want to ride together sometimes to help each other out.

The End.

Xavier & Me

Until I actually looked up communities in the dictionary, I didn’t realize exactly how many I was apart of nor how many were inadvertently affecting me. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary a community is defined as “any group living in the same area or having interests, work, etc in common”. By that definition, Xavier is my community. All Biology Premed majors, even those not attending Xavier, form a community of which I am a member. All the women in the world, all the women in my dorm, all the women on my floor, we all form different communities. The people in my hometown, who went to my high school, everyone in college, everyone in Louisiana makes up different communities. Communities are everywhere, and everyone, whether they know it or not, is apart of at least a dozen. There are numerous communities of which I’m apart of, but I still want more. Xavier alumni, physician, homeowner, wife, mother, and who knows what other goals I’ll come up with between now and graduation. Ever since I was younger I’ve dreamed of becoming a member of those communities.  These communities speak to me. I don’t know if I can adequately explain my reasons. They are things I’ve always wanted, always dreamed of. In the future, every time I become a member of those communities I’ll have accomplished another of my life goals. In order to accomplish these goals I’ll have to stay focused and put my all into the things I want out of life. If I don’t give my all how will I ever know if it was meant to be. These communities demand dedication, strength, humor, and a love for what you’re doing. If there is more, I’ll figure that out along the way.

The only community I am currently in is pre-med community I consider this a community because it’s a major that a lot of individuals are currently taken a Xavier, we all have meetings together and social groups on face book. A community that I most defiantly would like to join is a sorority I love everything about it. In a sorority they have secret meetings, codes, signs and sounds that only the members know. as we all know your not supposed to say the sorority that your planning on pledging for but I will let you know that its the best out there and very hard to get into. To enter a lot of sororities the first step is to pledge into them, but before you are even aloud to pledge there are certain credentials they look at such as; academics, community service hours and other social groups. Before you are aloud to become a member after you are aloud to pledge some sororities make you memorize the Greek alphabet or even some paddle there members (which is against the law). There are a lot of chemistry and biology clubs at Xavier even these clubs have guidelines and rules such as a certain GPA, what course you’re taking and how well you’re doing in those courses. In clubs like biology or chemistry they offer scholarship and if you study for them over the summer there are certain programs that will actually pay you for doing something you love. In sororities it’s a life long family you can go any here in the United States and find others who are members of the same sorority or club as you, communities are life long families, goals and priorities.

XAVIER & ME!!

Posted by Erin Gardner on September 21, 2008

I belong to several communities, most of which I don’t consciously think about, such as my family, the female and African-American communities.  I can also break down my membership to neighborhood, religion and heritage.  However, I am fully aware daily of my involvement in the Xavier community and its class of 2014, more specifically, its Chemistry Pre-pharmacy section.

I would like to be involved in more communities voluntarily.  I am currently trying to become an employee at Walgreens in their pharmacy section.  From personal experience, I know that Walgreens considers the customer’s happiness to be top priority and they highly value employee-customer relationship.  I feel that by becoming a member of the Walgreens community, I can enhance my knowledge in my future career, as well as improve my personal skills through customer satisfaction and employee teamwork.  I have been updating my employee application and speaking with Walgreens’ section managers on a regular basis so that I may, hopefully, become a member of their team and community in the near future.

I am also putting forth an extra effort to become more active in the Catholic community by regularly attending a church.  Being an active member of a church can be very fulfilling.  The church is a foundation of support and moral values.  Within the church, I may form closer connections with individuals that have similar interests in other areas of life which can help me to bring that faith and support outside of the church doors.  I have visited several Sunday masses at local churches near my neighborhood so that I may find one in particular that I am comfortable with and enjoy.  Being a member of one (or more) communities gives you a sense of belonging and acceptance and I think that everyone should be able to experience those feelings and be able to give and receive support with a community.

Xavier and Me

Communities groups of people with a common ground. They can range from housing location and ethnicity to clubs and organizations. People belong to varies communities and I belong to many myself. I belong to the black community, the Xavier community, and New Orleans community, as well as many more. But looking towards the future, there are some other communities that I hope to become a member of, like the Xavier Alumni community and the black orthodontis communtiy. To become a member of those two communities I have to be able to work hard no matter how I feel at any given moment and I have to graduate with the grades good enough to get me to that next goal in my life. The values that are associated with the Xavier Alumni community are simple. Really of all you need to do is graduate from Xavier. But to graduate for Xavier there are a couple of thing we all know that you need to do first. You have to complete freshman seminar, graduate with roughly 125 hours, and manage to stay in school all together. For me to become a successful black orthodontist, I have to become a Xavier Alumni, get into a dental school and stay there for four years, then take another threes years of orthodontics, and finally getting a fellowship to begin practicing. The one thing that most communities like these have in common is that they both call for the best effort that the individual can give. Which shows how communities start to overlap and hold a large variety of people.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Bechi Okwumabua on September 21, 2008

First and foremost, I am part of the African-American community. Also, I’m a part of the female community, as well as the Christian community. These are general communities in which I belong to. More specifically, I am recognized as part of the Xavier, class of 2012 community. I’m a biology-premed major, meaning that I can be included with other students of the same major. I’m not from New Orleans, therefore I’m not a part of the New Orleans community, but I am from Memphis, TN. With other Memphians that attend Xavier, a community can be formed. Hopefully, in due time I will be inducted into the medical physician community, andt hen from there, I would like to become part the base of plastic surgeons. I know that this is a task that is not easy to achieve. Many students ahve similar dreams of indulging in the medical field. However, ever dreamer does not end up exactly where they imagined. As for me, I’m going to do my best to achieve my goal to the point exactly where I want to be. I know it is going to take hard work and dedication, late nights of studying and projects, and weekends at home instead of in the streets or with my friends. There are going to be those times when I cry, when I’m tired of working, tired of studying, and tired of going to class, not to mention the moments of pure frustration and temptation of giving up. But I’m going to have to develop tough skin, and strong mind, and persistence with determination. I’m going to have to continue to push forward and do my best. This is the only way that I will make it to that point where I want to be; that is a part of the surgeon community. My interest in this community originated just recently, probably around the eleventh grade. Before then I could have sworn I was going to be a singer!! But my senses kicked in and I decided to sing on the side and focus on a real career rather than the fast life of glitter and fame. So now, my focal point is towards the medicl community, where I know I will have to display my intelligence and collaborative skills. I will have to be creative, spontaneous, and highly informed of the biology of the human body. This is all possible to me. So I’m going to do my best to get it done.

Xavier & Me

Posted by Roseanna Desiree Jessup on September 21, 2008

I am currently a member of many communities. I am a member of many very large communities, the African American community, the United States community and the female community. Despite the fact that I am new to New Orleans, I have already been implanted into a number of different communities. The Xavier community, the student community, and the freshman community among others.

Even so, I want to become a member of other communities. Actually, I have already become a member of one: the NAACP here at Xavier. I am I lifetime member in El Paso and I want to participate here as well. I went to the meeting on Tuesday. To be a part of the NAACP you have to get involved. They want you to know what is going on with our race and take an active role. Whether it be through community service, political action, or healthcare they want you to take action. At the meeting a signed up for the community service committe. I want to become a part of a church community here. I’m working on that but I haven’t found the right one.

There are also communities that I would like to be a part of but I wont be. I would love to be a part of the tennis community here at Xavier but I know that I am  not advanced enough to play at the college level. I would even love to be a part of the basketball community but even though I love the sport, I would NEVER be able to play. I tried lol. I would also like to be a part of the SGA community. That is something that I could POSSIBLY do but it isn’t very likely. I have always wanted to be a part of student government, even in high school, but it just never happened. I just don’t think I fit the role.

I know that I have four years to find out what communities are right for me. I’m staying open to anything. I want to see what else I might be interested in becoming a part of.

Loving to Be Involved at Xavier

Posted by Joi Martin on September 21, 2008

As of now, I am involved in the liturgical dance team at the on-campus church.  Our first performance was on September 14, 2008 and it was exciting!  I was really nervous but as usual, I worry a lot about nothing.  We did really well and the next performance is in October…I can’t wait!

I plan to be as actively involved in various organizations as possible.  Next on my list of joining is the yearbook committee.  I do not know if it is exactly what I want to do but it does not hurt to try and they are known for modeling! YAY! I also want to pledge Delta next year.  I will be the first Delta in the family because I am the first to attend a traditional four year college.  I look forward to seeing my younger family members follow in my footsteps.  However, I am not anticipating hell week.  Being completely clueless about what I might go through is building the suspense but I think I can handle anything thrown my way.  This last aspiration may be unexpected but I actually want to become a R.A.  Private room, my own bathroom, and free room and board…sounds like paradise to me!  Besides the highlights of the job, I will have the responsibilities of managing my floor.  I will have to be in my room most of the time, at Xavier on weekends, and maybe even writing up the residents (the worst aspect).

I can prepare now by attending meetings, talking to the students who currently hold the positions, showing up at practice, and basically researching the organizations.  The main reason for being involved so much is because I want to meet everyone here.  I feel more at home when I am surrounded by friends.  I want to make my Xavier experience the best it could be.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Morgan Weber on September 21, 2008

The communities I am currently involved in are my home town community, the Xavier community and  my church community.  My home town community is where I live and where I interact with others who live in the community.  Sometimes I see the same ones often, like in my neighborhood, or a very few, like in Walmart.  My Xavier community is where I go to school, and it includes those who also attend Xavier University as students, faculty and staff.  I interact with them on a daily basis.  My church community includes those who I go to church with.  I see them almost every Sunday, and we praise the Lord together.

Other communities I wish to be a part of are the chemistry club community, my freshman community and the New Orleans community.  To become a part of the chemistry club community, I must become an official member by paying dues and also attending events that are required.  Some examples include attending a dinner where a speaker comes and talk about his scientific discoveries, doing community projects with the chemistry club members and participating in a social event to get to know members of the chemistry club better.  I plan on becoming a part of my freshman community by taking  part in the events designated for freshman and by getting to know other freshman.  Plus, I plan to become a part of the New Orleans community by doing community service.  To do this, I have joined “Teaching Young Children” which tutors children in the New Orleans community.

These communities interest me because I am interested in chemistry, meeting new people, and helping around the city in which my school lies.  First of all, chemistry is my major, and because I want to become a doctor, I want to make sure the medical school of my choice knows I am interested in the sciences.  Second of all, I want to get to know my freshman class, because I am going to be with them for four years, and I want to make sure those years are as pleasant as possible.  Lastly, I want to make sure I take part in helping to influence others in New Orleans because I believe I have something to offer the city.

Each community also have some requirements. The guidelines for chemistry club community include what I have mentioned previously and having the love for chemistry.  It does not matter if one is not a chemistry major, but one must be dedicated and willing to work hard.  As for the freshman community, one must be a freshman at Xavier University and take part in the events for Freshman.  However, others can interact with those in the freshman community.  To be part of the New Orleans community, all anyone has to do is live there, but to make a difference, I think, one must try to better the community.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Freddie Williams on September 21, 2008

Currently, I am a member of many communities. From the African American community to the Xavier community and the list goes on and on. So one could see that I am in many different types of communities: race, family, academics and even gender related ones. Eventually, I would like to become a part of other communities, such as the healthcare professional community and the millionaire community. In order to become a member in the healthcare professions community I must first began by insuring my entrance into medical school and going on to become a doctor. I can insure this by working hard in school now and by also getting involved with many of my other communities. This in turn will also help me get into the millionaire community. Happiness equals money, money and money, and more money! The healthcare professions community exists as one of interest to me because I love helping others in their time of need, I know that no matter what I will always be needed and I know that the field is very lucrative and I will be able to live comfortably and provide well for my family. The reason why I would like to be a member of the millionaire community is because (even though many might disagree) money makes the world go round. Without money, or even a lack there of, people often fail at their passions a lose sight of all the goodness around them. Although it can cause some to give in to other evils, most of the time a surplus of money makes people’s lives so much easier, thus so much better. There are often specific guidelines to such communities, some just simply being black, other as simple as only working somewhere in the healthcare field, but these simple ones are only those that allow one to be considered a member. There are many others that dictate one being an active member, such as serving the community for its benefit or helping out those in the community.

Xavier and me!

One communty that i belong to is Xaviers Community while i am attending Xavier I am apart of the community also in the Xavier community the are individual communities like majors. I would be apart of the chemistry community because my major is chemistry pre-pharmacy. Another community i want to become apart of is the Hollester co. community when i start working there. The things i will do to enter this community is first i have to apply. I also need to go to an interview and an orintation. The rules of this community is you need good customer services you also need to be nice to your fellow employers. Also you cant steal and you have to make sure you look out for people who do steal. There are many kinds of Communties to be involved in. There is school communities, church communities, neiborhoods, states, and cities. One community I am involved in is my dance club communtiy. In my dance club we work together like a family we go to compietions together and have to make sure we have good communication. A club is aslo a good community because there is rules to be in a club and values. Im also apart of a reading club and thats also another communtiy in its self. When you pick your communtiy you have to make sure you get in to one that you know you will get along with the people in your communtiy. I know when i join communtiys i make sure i get along with the people in there and im intrested in the things there interasted in.

Xavier and ME…

Posted by Brittany Tripp on September 21, 2008

Well I am apart of many different communities. To start off, I am apart of the New Orleans Community, since I have now made New Orleans my home. Im a member of the Xavier University Community. Since I am a student here at Xavier, that very well much makes me part of its community. I wish I could be apart of the other communities within the school, ie staying on campus, but it just so happens that I do not live on campus. I hope to be apart of the Xavier College of Pharmacy community in a couple of years from now. But there are many different communities here at Xavier, such as athletics, student government, social clubs, and I would like to be apart of at least two or more. I am interested in joining a sorority, Ive always wanted to. I wouldnt also mind playing basketball or tennis for Xavier. I also have always wanted to join SGA but I havent gotten around to it yet, but hopefully I will be apart of the SGA community sometime while being a Xavierite. Lastly, I would love to be apart of a community service project, helping others in the city, making the city of New Orleans a better place. Im apart of a couple of communities, but there are alot more that I hope to soon be apart of.

Currently I am a member of the freshmen community at Xavier.  Also I am apart of the Xavier Activities Board community.  I am apart of the Pre-med community also.  I am apart of the Biology Club community as well.  my friends and I are a community as well.  I am apart of the Katherine Drexel Hall community too.  I was thinking of becoming apart of the Delta Sigma Theta community.  That communtiy seems really interesting to me.  I was also thinking of becoming apart of the student government community.  To enter the sorority I will have to attend an interest meeting and have to go through the process of hazing.  To become apart of the student government I would just have to start going to their meetings.  The sorority is interesting to me because the women that are apart of that are more likely to het the best jobs.  Also they help the community with volunteering.  They seem very respectable and welcoming to me.  The student government is appealing to me because they control what happens for the student body.  Their decisions seriously affect what goes on on campus.  Delta Sigma Theta’s ideologies are economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and development.  The goals are to strengthen and recognize all theree branches of the association, constitutional revisions, to work efficiently and to address student concerns, Go Green and health Disparities Campaigns, to adopt a local school, and to revive the mission of the student government.

Xaiver and Me

Posted by whochrisvu on September 21, 2008

A community is not just a large group of people like in a city or town.  A community is a group of people sharing common interests or traits.  Being Vietnamese, I am apart of the Vietnamese community.  Religion influences what community you associate yourself with; I’m Catholic, so I’m apart of that community.  Being in the work force also makes you apart of another community; I guess that makes me apart of the Winn-Dixie community.  The list can go on and on as one can be apart of a multitude of communities.

Which community do I want to be apart of?  My main goal right now is to enter the community of Pharmacists and also the Xavier Alumni.  To do this, all I have to do is work hard and study diligently.  I guess it’s in my interest because everyone who is apart of this community always share the common goal of wanting to help their community through medicine.  To me, that is an awesome thought and it makes me want to strive hard so that I can one day be apart of that community.  As far as being a Xavier Alumni, being apart of that community shows others that you have worked hard, put effort in everything that you did, and that you are successful.  It just helps others think that if they, the graduates, can work hard for the four or how many years, then so can I.

What’s the criteria of being apart of that community?  The values and ideologies reflect the community.  Pharmacists have principles of helping others through their own occupations whether it is behind a store counter or in a lab developing new medicines.  The Xavier Alumni should have values of promoting a more and just humane society as that is the mission of the school they attended for so many years.  The most important thing to know about a community is that you are not alone.  They is someone who is always next to you, with the same interests and goals, helping you push forward and succeed.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Edward Hill,III on September 21, 2008

I am currently a member of several communities. The most important community I’m a member in is Xavier University. Being a member of Xavier, I’m proud to say I’m part of the many asset communities it offers. I’m a member of the St. Michael Hall and freshmen community. These aren’t the only communities I’m involved in. This past year I became part of the St. James High Alumni community which includes the St. James High football community. At Xavier I’ve heard of a lot of interesting clubs I would like to join. The SGA board is what I’m interested in the most. Being that I’m a freshman I don’t know too much about being on the board. To get on the SGA board, I must participate in all the activities it offers.

These particular communities interest me because they represent me fully. I like to be a leader not a follower. In this position, I would be setting examples for others. They also have a positive vibe that attracts my attention. My opinion on how I feel about my school, communities, and the feelings of others  would be heard. The SGA board is known for having a positive effect on society, Xavier, and the surrounding areas. By being a member of the SGA board I would feel complete knowing I’m helping make a difference. As of now this is the only club that has all my interest. I hope there are more that will gain my interest because I want to make a difference. I will accomplish this goal by any means.

Xavier and Me! :o)

Posted by Shannon Taylor on September 21, 2008

Since the day I became a student at Xavierite I also became a student involved in a lot of communities. As of today I can say that I am involved in the following communities: The Xavier Pharmacy student community, the female community at Xavier, the African American community, the commuter student community, and the New Orleans community. All of these communities are very important as I complete my college years.

Being a pre-pharmacy student at Xavier I need to become close friends who are in the same field as i am. It would help me if I had any questions or concerns regarding the meeting or guild line of the pharmacy major. In this particular community we have close relations because of how competitive it s. knowing everything we need to know about upcoming events. Being in this community you are able to help other out when important things come around.

The Xavier community and the New Orleans community are also very important to each other. Being a student at Xavier you have to be aware of the surrounding city. So, getting to know New Orleans as a city is extremely important. Learning where stores are located and where important buildings are.

The African American community reflects upon the accomplishments we have made as a group. I feel as an African American community member it’s a responsibility to do my best in school. We have the responsibility to prove certain stereotypes wrong and achieve the best opportunities we can.

I am a female commuter student at Xavier. It is good to know other students who commute back and forth from other homes. It’s good to know other commuters in case school is canceled and you wouldn’t need to commute that day. Being a female at Xavier it’s good to know other females so you can have someone to hang out with or study with or in case a female meeting is taking place on campus.

Being involved in communities is rewarding because it helps everyone learn from each other and help each other.

Xavier and Me!

Posted by Hai Tran on September 21, 2008

In a society, everyone is part of some form or type of community even though it may not seem like it. We are constantly misled that a community has to be a great large group of people, but in reality it can be a simple community of 10 people.

For me, I am in many different communities. I’m a Catholic, so I’m in a community of Catholics, a vietnamese church, I am in the community of Xavier Pre-med Biology students, I am also part of a community in New Orleans, and the list can go on and on.

I want to be in a community where I share similar or unique bonds or thoughts with a group of people or possibly even same religion or race, for instance a group of Vietnamese-Americans share the same race and can be diverse in a sense of how they’ve been raised. Being part of a group makes you feel at home, so for me any community that makes me feel warm and at peace or at rest/home I’d be glad to be a part of.

For me, to enter a certain community, you should try to understand and get along with the members of that community. For instance, the Xavier community of Pre-Med Biology students, we should all help each other out, work together to achieve our common goal of becoming Med school students one day.  Another prime example is in our own neighborhoods, an easy way to enter that community is well as simple as moving into that neighborhood, but more importantly, get along with our neighbors, lend each other a hand when times get rough, and most importantly get to know them.

Certain communities attract me because it feels like we are achieving a goal that refers back to the Xavier Mission to promote a more just and humane society. As a community, we strive to work together, help each other, and become an overall better group of people in a community. Becoming a community in itself is like one big step towards becoming a better society, because we are gathering together and working together in a sense of getting along, helping one another, and most importantly not leaving anyone out.

In a community, there are no rules, no regulations, no ideals that we should follow as a set interest, but instead we should all bring something unique to the community. Everyone’s ideas, their beliefs, and their thoughts blend together to make something unique in the sense of a bond that everyone shares, not just based on one thing. A Vietnamese catholic church for example is a community, but in it is made of Vietnamese people that can be from any place in Vietnam, can be any age, have a strong belief, or a mild one, but we are not all the same and that is what makes us unique, not everyone is the same.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Chris Le on September 21, 2008

I am apart of many communities such as the Xavier community, sports, neighborhood, church, key club, and many others.  There isn’t any particular community that i want to be a part of because there’s so many to choose from and once you join something you’re automatically considered to be a part of that community.  If there’s a certain participation activity that i have to do in order to be apart of that community and depending on what it is then i would do it because me being in different communities will show how well my interactions with other people are and how well we all get along with each other and it gives an opportunity for new friendships to develop.  There’s many communities that interest me in many different ways.  It could be because of helping others, fundraising, and just giving back to what you want to help develop into a better surrounding and/or society.  The ideas of the communities always have to be on the positive side because no one wants to be apart of a community who was a bad reputation because they too will be looked down upon. The rules of all communities would be the key one of treating everyone around you as an equal because why would someone want to join a community if they’re going to be looked down upon because of their race or background.  The values of the community, such as sports, academics, and neighborhoods, should be cherished because who would want to join a community but show no pride and no enjoyment in that particular community?  Take pride in your sports teams, take pride in your acacdemic achievements because others will envy and then that envy will turn into motivation and determination for that person to strive and push themselves for the same achievement.

As of the moment I am a member of a few communities. Im a member of the St. Mikes community which is pretty much all the new freshman Xavierites, part of the Bio HOnor Corps community that meets up often throughout the month to discuss preparations about various objective on getting into MEd School successfull and to help you do well at Xavier. Also, im a member of the African American community among XAvier which is a very big community =P. I would like to become a member of one or a few of the many volunteer programs at Xavier because it is always good to get involved and to get into MEd school you must have community service and it always looks good on a resume. I always wanted to join a faternity but Im not a big fan of the initiation process so I doubt I would ever join one. Ive heard that joining a faternity is very huge for your future and it can help you out in the long run. Even for interviews it is very impressive to be part of a faternity and can easily get you the job with the right connections. The general guidelines of each of these communites is generally to be a good person and hopefully to become well rounded. Also, if you are part of any club or organization im pretty sure that you will have to be involved to stay in the program and not just sign up for it and just say your a part of it even though you dont help out.

A community is different groups and organizations that I am apart of. Being in a community you all share the same types of intrest. For example I live in a freshman, all girls dorm; this would make me apart of the St. Katherine Drexel Community. Another example, I live on the 3rd floor St. Katerine Drexel this also makes me apart of the 3rd floor Community. Being that I attend Xavier University I am also apart of the Xavier Community. Back home I go to a Christian Church, Faith Community; this another community that I am in. My major at Xavier University is Chemisty/Pre-med, that is another community that I participate in. Back at home, me and my friends have this group called the quatro, I am apart of this community. I am apart of the New Orleans community. I love my family to death and they are a HUGE support sytem in my life, along with many others I am apart of this community.

Although I am apart of these communities, there are still communities that I would like to join. I would like to join the SGA community . I would also like to be apart of the east coast club community. To be in some of these communities there are many different rules and guidelines that you must follow. To be in these communities I will find out their different interest and from there I will see if it is something I would like to be interested in. If not there are many other communites that i can be apart of.

Xavier and Me

Posted by Cherise Steib on September 21, 2008

The most current and obvious community that I am a part of is, of course, Xavier University. Within the university I am also a part of the St. Katherine Drexel Hall and freshmen community. Other communities I am a part of outside of Xavier include Communi Street (my hometown street), St. James High Alumni, and St. James Catholic Church. I am in many others, but those are just a few key communities.

I would love to be a member of Xavier’s Activity Board, Xavier’s volunteer group, SGA, and the chemistry club. To become a part of those communities I will simply sign up, but there are some things I must do to remain a member. For the chemistry club, I have to do two community service events, two social events, and I must be a National ACS member. For the other clubs, I must participate in the activities.

The communities I would like to become a member of interest me because they represent many positive things. Each club is involved in community service which is important in my life. I love to contribute to the community. It makes me feel complete to know that I positively affected some else’s life.  Each club is also known for their great achievements. The chemistry club has been nationally recognized by ACS, SGA has been “ the voice” for XU students, and XAB has put on fun activities. Another great thing about these communities is that they have a good reputation. If I were to become a part of any one of them, I would be known for only great things.

Like many others here at Xavier, I am part of many communities. By going to this university, you are a part of a community in general. Second of all, I am a resident of the St Katharine Drexel Hall; therefore I am part of an all girl community. My floor and side makes me more in a impact community. I also have a closer bond to those who are from Memphis because we came from similar backgrounds and relateble actions. Do that make since? Anywho, I am a Biology/Pre-Med major. This make my community more defined and complex. The students, who are blogging for this class, are consider as a community. We are expressing our Freshmen experiences. Like many communities, we are have common goals and interests….

I am looking forward of looking to be part of the yearbook, Homing committee, Biology club, and maybe a sorority. I have a true goal of being part of Xavier’s Alumni community. Commitment is going to drive me to take part of these communities. I have to do my research first. All of these communities can help me grow ass a person, and I get excited for many more communities that will approach me! This school year is going to place and/or present us to new organizations, clubs, and committees that can change our college experiences. The best part is that we are getting a once in a life style that many get jealous of.

I am being adventurous and going to try everthing that can help me gro as a person. Let the new phrase begin!

Xavier and Me

I am currently a member of New Orleans Community, Vietnamese Community, and Xavier University Community. New Orleans is a really unique city where you can discover great foods, great people, and great places to have fun, which became my one of a kind Community. As you all know, I am Vietnamese; I am living in this town call Versailles. This is where many Vietnamese people have resided. My Vietnamese Community had grown over time and I believe it will grow further. If you want to try great Vietnamese food, you should stop by Versailles and try it. I recently joined Xavier University Community. This is the Community I chose to be in and I am not regretting. I am proud to be in this Community, they have great programs, fantastic professors, and friendly people. This is where I want and will continue my education to become what I want to be, a dentist.

I would like to be a part of many other communities such as different ethnics, biology premed, and yoga. I want to join in a community that has different ethnic. I want to know about their culture and learn good things that I have not heard before. I think it is great to have friends in different ethnic, because we can exchange different ideas and feelings toward things. I am a part of Biology Premed community, but I have not had a chance to participate any activity or meeting. Therefore, I will try my best to attend meetings and observe things from it. It is a community I need and want to be in. Biology premed is my major and I would like to learn more things from this community; it will help me toward my education at Xavier. Sport is my least favorite thing to do but I am now wanted to join. As everyone knows that sport can relieve stresses and get fit but sports are not my interest. That is why I want to join yoga. Yoga can relieve my stresses which I will have often about school and expenses. Most of all it will get me fit and healthy.

I believe most of the communities have their own guidelines. I don’t mind follow it as long as it doesn’t go against my will. The communities I wanted to join are completely new to me. Therefore, I don’t really know their guidelines until I join it. But whatever it is I am willing to learn and try new things.

Xavier and Cui Wei

Posted by Cui Wei Zhang on September 20, 2008

I am in two communities which are Xavier and the pre-pharmacy program corrently. I am not the original American student, that means study in English should be a little bit hard for me. Therefore, being in the pharmacy school is a only major goal for me right now. Unluckly, the first day of school I found there was nobody whom I knew from high school or China in my classes. I was feel lonely at that time, and I was thinking about that I should be individual in college, and I should solve all of my problems by myself. But the activities what my classmates did for me had changed my mind. I still remember I did not know how to sign up the blackboard in class on the first day of school. I was nerves at that time. Luckly, the guy who sat next to me had discovered my problem, and used his computer showed me how to sign up the balckboard. His also showed me how to find out the answers of the quizzes of chemistry. Furthermore, they will let me know if there is any meeting in scholl. At that time, I found that I am not alone in Xavier. I have friends, I am in the friend community, Xavier.

Finally, I am proud that I am a member of pre-pharmacy program in Xavier University of Louisiana. I want to be in the pharmacy group because I know I would be the pharamicist after six year if I did not give up during these years. I hope I could try my best to help the poor people in my future!!!!

Xavier & Mychelle

Posted by Mychelle Williams on September 20, 2008

Currently I am a within the Xavier University community. More specifcally I am apart of the graduating class of 2012. Within that class I belong to the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Scholars communtiy which connects me to older Howard Hughes members; which on a larger scale connects me with all of the “premed” majors. My major is psychology/premed, so I associate myself wuth the pyschology and pyschology premed majors as well. We have a East Coast club which I hope to join so that I can meet people from up North and maybe even my home town. The next meeting I plan on attending. I also one day hope to join the psycholgy premed honors fraterinty, “Alpha Epsilon Delta”. I will work very hard to reach and maintain a stable but high gpa to get in. I am interested in the honor frat. because it is pretigious and I consider myself prestigious, also I would gain many important connections that will serve a great deal of value in the future. I am apart of the KD, communtiy, specifically the fourth floor. I was interested in dorm council but since hurricane Gustav I haven’t  heard too much about it. I wanted to be VP. But I’ll try againg next year. Mostly the fun communities I wish to join just require you to show up and be committed. But the more serious ones I have to maintain a certain gpa. and I must have a nice record of community service, also I need reccommendations from prestigious people. As I continue in my college career, I hope to join a greek besides the honor ones and maybe cheerleading.

Xavier and Kristin!!!

Posted by Kristin Williams on September 20, 2008

I’m a part of various communities. Some are the Williams community, my neighborhood, the Xavier community, SMA alumni, my friend’s community, African-American, and clubs. There are a lot of communities that I could join. The one I’m most concerned about is the community at Xavier. I’ve recently became part of the college transition community as a new freshman. I hope to become more acquainted to the Xavier community now that I have entered. I want to make myself known in this community because I will be attending this institution for a long time. I also recently signed up to be apart of the chemistry and the Xavier Activities Board community. To be apart of these communities you have to have drive, motivation, and keep your academic status up. I want to maintain all these qualities in my years here at Xavier. I’m interested in these communities because it will demonstrate the abilities I have and show how much I care about being apart of their community for that’s what our mission is. One last community but not the least is getting into the College of Pharmacy. This will the biggest goal for me to achieve while here at Xavier. I’m interested in this community because it will show that I have succeeded and help me obtain my goal in becoming a pharmacist. The main guideline for getting into the College of Pharmacy is your “transcript” as many of my teachers are telling me. All of these clubs I’ve listed have great reputations they uphold and I want to be apart of this for my future. ~ Kristin

Xavier and Me

Posted by Jamaan Kenner on September 20, 2008

I am currently involved in a plethora of communities.  My family, my race, Xavier University, Xavier Gold Rush basketball team, are included along with dozens of others.  I am proud to say that I am a member of each of these wonderful communities.  I want to eventually become a part of the Xavier Alumni community and especially a part of the Xavier grads that go to medical school and become doctors.  To enter these, I will keep my grades high while competing at the highest level on the basketball court.  To me, juggling basketball and my pre-med major will be extremely beneficial and will help me to attain my goal of joining these elite communities.  These interest me because I’ve wanted to become a doctor for the majority of my life, and I now have the best chance possible of attaining this goal because I attend Xavier University.  In order to join, I have to keep up with my work and continue my pursuits of being a doctor.  In order to stay in the Xavier Gold Rush community, I must not settle for success, but achieve excellence, as coach would say.  I believe that this will be the most challenging to keep because of the physical and mental demands that come with it.  These harsh demands, however, will make me a better person and will help prepare me for life as an adult, post-college.

Overall, I must say that i couldn’t be involved in better communities than what I am in now.  Most males my age aren’t even in school, so I have already begun to beat the odds.  These communities will define me as a person, and I am extremely proud to be a part of each.

I’m proud to say that I’am part of the Wilson’s Community first, I’m currently in the Xavierite Community, my home town community New Orleans, and other communities. I’m also part of the Biomedical Scholar Community, Premed/Biology community, and  St. Katharine Drexel Dorm Community. I love the communites that I’m currently in at the moment. These communties are the greatest in my life right now.

These are some communities that I would like to join. The Pom Pom Squad, Volleyball Team, Biology Club, Pear Dean, and also a sorority.  To join the communities I listed above. I would have to try out for most of the positionsto join their communities. Like for insists Pom Pom Squad I would have to try out for two days straight to be on the team and in their community.

The reason I would love to join those communities they are very active and exciting.  I would feel like I fit into something I would love to do for college extra activities.  The guidelines of these communities stay focus, practice, make sure you do your school work. That’s the most important part in your life and why you are at Xavier and at college.

I feel like if I’m going to be a part of these communities that it would be so important to me to join these clubs and communties in my college career.  Most of all being a Xavierite is the best communtiy of all besides my Wilson community my family.  Communties can be the best things in your life if you let it.

Week 4: Xavier and Me

Posted by Mike Tran on September 20, 2008

First, I am proudly to say that I am part of the Tran family community. I am also part of West Jefferson Highschool alumni community. And last but not least, I am currently part of Xavier University community. One day I hope I can be a part of The Pharmacy community too. I also been trying to sign up for Chemistry Club. I hope I can try to be more involved in Xavier’s community because in the next six or seven years this will be my second home. I would also love to be involved in more communities, but for right now I will have to settle for the ones that I have time for. For fun, I would also like to be in a community that has to do with sports. To keep up with all the communites that I plan to be in, I will try to attend all the meetings and  participate in most of the events.

Why does these particular communities interest me? Well, one day I would hope to be a Pharmacist and being in the chemistry community will help me achieve my goals. As for sports, to me, it is like a stress releiver because you are not thinking of anything besides what would be your next move.

As for guidelines, I will not put anything before school. If I am really busy on a day and there is a meeting I would have to stay home because school is my number pirotiy. I hope I can make many friends out of this value because some people might have connections and one day I might need it.
