Majors & Careers: What major did you start school with? How did you come to the decision to major in that field? Has anything caused you to reconsider your major? If so, why? Will you change majors? What do you see yourself doing as a career with your chosen major?

Majors and Careers

Posted by Kirsten Smith on November 17, 2008

I started school at Xavier University as a chemistry/pre-pharmacy major. I chose this major because I like math and science. Pharmacy has a lot to do with these two subjects. In high school, chemistry was not my favorite subject, but I did pretty well in it. I will take chemistry next semester, and depending on how I do in it will determine if I want to stick with this major. I always wanted to do something in the medical field so that is another reason why I chose it. If I were to switch majors it would still have to do with the medical field. I used to want to be a pediatrician because I love children. this could still be an option for me if pharmacy does not work out. I also chose a chemistry major because there is a lot you can do with a chemistry degree. I want to work as a pharmacist in a hospital with my chosen major.

major…

Posted by Rachael Flores on November 14, 2008

I started this journey as a chemistry/pre-pharmacy major and I intend to keep it that way. I have been a pharmacy technician for six looong years and I felt like I needed to take the next step. Somehow I feel like too much is involved when it comes to the education one needs to become a retail pharmacist. At this point, all of the technology does the work for you. The pharmacists these days really do not rely on knowledge they have gained in college most of the time. They press buttons on the computer, the computer flags them when there is a problem. When people need consultations, the pharmacist can always look on the computer if they do not know the answers. However, there are rare occasions when they are forced to dig deep into their brain reserves to answer some of the craziest questions that people come up with. In this first semester, I’m not doing as well as I should be in chemistry, which leads some people to believe that I should change majors since the whole six years will be mostly focused on chemistry. If I cannot become a pharmacist, there is really nothing else that I would be interested in at this point. Who knows? Maybe something will spark and light a fire inside of me to do something totally different. I am open to change….but it would have to be something totally awesome and in the same pay category as being a pharmacist. I was thinking to minor in Spanish, but I’ve been told that it will be extremely difficult to do both. At this point, it’s too early to tell. I’ve got my whole life ahead of me.

Majors and Careers

Posted by maj0615 on November 12, 2008

I began my college career with high expectations in Mass Communication with a concentration in broadcast journalism. I chose this major because I’ve had a love for writing/reporting for a very long time. I began taking my writing seriously around the age of 12, and my mind has not been changed. I don’t think I’ve ever considered changing my major.

I had given up writing after Hurricane Katrina, and came to the realization that the old saying is true: if you don’t use it, you lose it. I started writing again and found that it was a big stress reliever. Another reason why I am so motivated is to prove others wrong. Last year, my senior year of high school, my teacher would not let me write for our school’s newspaper. I figured that my writing “wasn’t her standard”. Through all the red marks and corrections on my paper, I finally gave into her negative thoughts. Her thoughts had almost convinced me that I wasn’t good enough. Almost. I couldn’t allow myself to be that weak, so I kept writing no matter what she said.

Today, I am writing for the Xavier Herald, a place where my stories are actually appreciated. I’m learning more than I did last year and my writing is truly improving. I still want to concentrate on broadcast journalism, but it’s always best to be prepared in every aspect of journalism rather than staying in one area. I plan to remain focused and become a sports journalist, possibly sideline reporting and writing my own stories in the future.

My Majors is Sociology  & Careers is become a Social Worker working with Children or the jails or where ever I locate my self after college .The major I start school with was Sociology. I came to the decision to major in Sociology field because when I was a middle schoool I was a trouble young teenager because I didn’t really have a family to have the support of a family should of had an my mother was a single parent I did know my father I only seen my father on the weekend because while I was in school he was at home and he worked 2 shift so my parents was never really there and at that time the only people that was there for me was my teacher an mentor because everybody know I loves playing basketball and I was the kind of girl in school that was cool with everybody in the school but why the teacher was always on my back because I was short and had longest hair in school so the young boys was always on me. But as I got older I learn that girl don’t really have a role mode in there life and I love working children and my freshman year I looking it up and I enjoy it. Nothing made me reconsider my major I love what I do. If I was to change majors it would be Photography I love taking pictures. I see myself helping young teenager boys and girls most girl to help them become women an men help them with college an getting on the right track in life as  a career.

CAReeRS && MAJ0RS

Posted by Jillique Logan on November 11, 2008

I started my Xavier career as a bio-premed major. I decided to major in biology because I did really well in it in the 9th grade and because I am intrigued by learning how the body works. I am majoring in the premedical field because I want to be a doctor. Why do I want to be a doctor? I just really like to help people. I have a passion for it and I figured what better way to do that than to team my passion with something I enjoy learning about, the body. Right now I am reconsidering my major. I am thinking about changing it to psychology-premed. Although I like biology well enough, it doesn’t interest me the way that learning about the human brain does. I took psychology in high school and it definitely interested me more than cell functions. I also feel that psychology will make me a better doctor as it has been proven that some illnesses can be tied to the psychological more so than physiological. I am also thinking that in the event that I do not become a doctor, I would much rather do something in the field of psychology than biology. I am very much a people person and as such whatever I do will have to involve me working with people. I feel like biology will have me in the back of a lab somewhere. I have enrolled in psychology 1010 for next semester to make sure it is what I will do and hopefully by the time sophomore year comes around I will be a psych-premed major. I want to be a pediatrician.

majors.

Posted by Melinda Williams on November 11, 2008

The major I entered Xavier with is the same major that I hold now, Chemistry/Pre Pharmacy. I came to decision that I would pursue this career through my love for science and math, specifically Physics and Algebra. Majoring in pre Pharmacy does not really involve my love for Physics because Pharmacy is Chemistry based. Through majoring in Physics I would have to be some sort of engineer and I did not want to do that. Therefore I concluded that pharmacy may be the closest step. Now being here at Xavier, I have realized that maybe I should rethink my decision. Mainly because being a Pharmacist is not a profession I am truly passionate about. If anything I would use my pre Pharmacy degree and pursue a study in pharmacology or the study of natural medicines specifically for the treatment of cancer. So my interests in Pharmacy are more researched based rather that having a doctorate, which is what I originally came to Xavier for.

I’m not sure if I will change majors, but my plan is to finish this year with Chemistry/Pre Pharmacy and then work from there. If I do change I may change to Chemistry/Pre Med or something more drastic like Psychology/Pre Med. Being a psychologist is something I really like the thought of because I like listening to people and helping them with their problems. It is something I do everyday so doing it professionally should be enjoyable and fulfilling. The only aspect that deters me from studying it, is the classes because they study how people think, how the mind works etc and I just want to help people. I’m just going to see what happens because as a freshman, obviously I am still undecided. I just detest the idea of planning out my future that the age of 18.

Majors and Careers

Posted by Nikketa Washington on November 11, 2008

The major that I started with in school was chemistry/pre-med. I came up with this major when I was in the eleven grade when I had my first chemistry class. And that is when i discovered, that when I graduate from high school and when i go to college I want to major in chemistry.  I came to a decision when i graduated and was looking for the right college to go to and somewhere I knew that I was going to get a good education. That is when I picked out Xavier University. I have always heard people say how they had so many college students graduate from there and go on to a good graduate school. And how so many of them went on to medical school and become what they have always wanted to be. Yes there were a couple of things that wanted me to change my major to pharmacy. Because it was like that I can go to school for six years and work behind a counter in Wal-Greens or even at a Hospital. Just by giving people medicine and telling them when to take them and getting paid a lot of money just by making someones health better. In the end i decide that I do not want to change my major because it might get boring after awhile. So I decide to keep my major the same because with me studying chemistry I can go into Forensic Science. That is something I have always wanted to do just by wacthing it on t.v. and I know that job would not be boring. I can see myself discovering someones killer and helping the police solve the crime and making someones family happy knowing that the murder is behind bars.

Mi Major

Posted by Courtney smith on November 11, 2008

My major is Biology-Premed. It is the major I entered into Xavier with. I decided to be a biology major a few years ago after i realized I loved science. I loved learning how the body worked and what was involved in health. I took a lot of health classes during high school and I realized I liked that kind of stuff. I have wondered what it would be like to be a different major. I have other intrests besides health. I would like to learn about computers, business, or political science. I plan to take some politcal science classes during the summer.  This will give me the chance to explore other majors and fufill my major requirement. I do not believe i will change my major however. I plan on becoming a Emergency Room doctor or a Pediatrician.  When I receive my MD, I plan on traveling abroad. I would like to travel to underpriviledged countries and helping with their care. This would help me fufill my desire to travel abroad and at the same time I would be helping people. The major place I would like to visit is Africa. I would like to see the beauty of the continent as well help solve some of the problems it faces. Eventually I would like to come home and serve a community in the United States. I would like to my hometown and do so eventually. I choose an ER or pediatrician because I like the fast pace of the er and I like children. I do not yet know which one I would like to be.

Biology/Pre-Med

Posted by Alexis Johnson on November 11, 2008

“What is your major?” It is heard very often here that other scholar here at Xavier University have majors as Biology/Pre-med, Chemistry/Pre-med, or Chemistry/Pre-Pharm. Like the majority of the Freshman class, I am a Biology/Pre-med major with hopes of being in the medical field. This major choose me because that I believed that Biology major could help me pursue my dreams of being a Physical Therapist. Many sources clearly stated that Biology and Chemistry are good choices to become doctors, nurses, or any part of the medical field, but they want more diverse majors than science majors. After talking to many doctors and reading a lot of articles, I reconsidered Biology/Pre-med as a major. With this thought in mind, I am seriously thinking of changing my major to Art, Education, or History with a Pre-med attachment. If I take the medical school’s required classes, I would be able to take part of the Rehabilitation programs. The only downfall I may have is the career choices I may have after Xavier University. I want to be so much; however I do not understand what is the best thing to do. I believed that if I go to the Counseling Center to figure out what is best for me and my future goals. I hope I do not have to change my career goals, but if I have to, than I will.

If anyone has any ideas, comments, or advice for what they think I should do next, please let me know.

Majors And Careers

Posted by Freddie Williams on November 10, 2008

I started Xavier as a biology-premed student. I have always known that I loved helping people and in the tenth grade I realized that becoming a doctor would be the easiest and most effective way to reach my goal. At my high school we had the Health Sciences and Technology Program that offers students preparation for many careers in many different fields, healthcare being one. I took many healthcare related classes and there I learned that I really wanted to someday become a cardiovascular surgeon. Here at Xavier there is one thing that has caused me to consider changing my major, but not from premed to something else only from biology to chemistry and it is the biology department’s structure. Our biology department is by far not the worst place on campus (that title goes to the financial aid department), but relative to the chemistry department it is not all that great. Over the last semester I have realized that the chemistry department is very more so organized and efficient in getting their jobs done rather than the faculty in the biology department, but considering that the two majors require that their students take the majority of the same courses with only a few upper-level differences I probably will not change it. As stated before I hope to eventually get into a great medical school and to go on to become a successful heart surgeon and be able to save the lives of many. With the degree of my choice I know that there will be many options for me to choose from and the road I choose will take me exactly where I need to be.

My Major

Posted by Shannon Taylor on November 10, 2008

The major I have chosen as my career path is Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy. I choose this as my major for a few reasons. I love science, I have a good history in the pharmacy field, and Xavier has one of the best pharmacy program in the country. When I started school I had to decide if I was majoring in this major for the right reasons. I had to think of my life in the future and how the major I did choose would fit my life’s plans. Pharmacist’s do get paid well…And money will help me in the future to have a wonderful family. Even though money is helpful in life, I didn’t want it to determine my career path. So, I told myself I would stick with pharmacy for the time being, but if any other majors caught my eye I could always change.

When I started Xavier this semester I took a biology class. Being in this class has made me realize how much I love biology. I love studying how life took place and all the steps to it. Realizing how exciting biology was..I almost change my major to Biology Pre-Medicine. The reason for me sticking to my first choice as a Pre-Pharmacy major is because I think I would prefer the work schedule of a pharmacist compared to the vigorous work schedule of a doctor. My plans of having a family wouldn’t really sit well with the late hours a doctor works.

Pharmacy seems to be the best major for me to be able to have a well paying job, and great family, and all the wonderful material things life has to offer. So, I will be working really hard as a pharmacy major to make the grades I need to help me sculpt the future I have always dreamed of. Hopefully as a pharmacist I will be able to help a lot of patients receive the medicine they need to live a healthier life.

Week:11 Majors and Careers

Posted by Sarah Wilson on November 10, 2008

My major I started with Xavier is Premed/Biology. That’s the only major I will be doing at this school. The reason why I wanted to major in premed/Biology because I love to help people with they are hurt or in need. This has been my passion since I was eight years of age.  I always wanted to help people in that type of way.  I will never change my major because this is my field I wanted to succeed in to do to help people that are injury or hurt. Also watching different television shows had me convenience to really join that field. I love the rush to help people that are seriously hurt and need of help in their condition. The shows are: Er, House, Discovery Health channel, and etc. This list of shows can go on and on.

I see myself in the (ER) Emergency Room help people in need like if someone come with a broken ankle I would help to put and cast on his ankle and give him crutches. Another one can be a person just got stab in the stomach and I would had to see how much blood the person had lost also how I would stich his wound. To me I will feel complete because I wanted this career since  I was a child I always believe I will do it. I just feel accomplished and Happy with my life because I achieve my goal and that’s all that matters.

Majors

Posted by Lamoyne Taylor on November 10, 2008

I started school with a Biology Pre-med major. I decided to major in this specific area so that maybe I can find a cure for many diseases out there in the world today.  If I do not find a cure, atleast I can treat people and make the world healthier. I was born with chronic asthma, and a lot of people do not have an idea of how bad it feel to not be able to breathe.  I survived all my life being on the edge; not knowing when an asthma attack will occur. Most of my life was taken from me because I could not engage in activities that required excess exercise.  By going through this condition, I did not want any other child to go through this.  I decided to become either a medical scientist or medical doctor, to rid the world of this nuissance.  I know that having asthma made my childhood not as pleasurable as others but I am glad that I survived. At first I was going to change my major because these classes are hard, but I realized that I am no quitter.  To be a medical doctor is my dream, and I am a dream chaser.  There is nothing that can stop me, cause if I fail I will only get back up and try it again.  I say its my determination, but others say its my ego; glad to have whichever one it is.  When it come to my career, I see my self doing a lot of things, from operations to experimenting.  THe one thing that has not or will not change is my vision to work in the field of medicine.

Majors & Careers

Posted by Trang Tran on November 10, 2008

When I was a little girl, I always hear my brother and sister complained about going a dentist. However, I loved going to the dentist for some reason or maybe I just liked his sense of humor. My dentist motivated me to become like him one day. Whenever I get my teeth pulled out or filled cavities, I always think that I am only doing this for good, and it only hurts for a moment. From there on, becoming a dentist is my goal no matter how hard it is going to be. I am currently majoring in biology pre-med and I still will be in this field for now. To be honest, I have many times thought of changing my major to pre pharmacy because of most of my friends are in that field and it less complicated then becoming a dentist. But then again, I don’t or wouldn’t want to become a pharmacist because I never wanted to be one and to me it is a boring job. So I chose to keep my major for now. However, I am not 100% sure that I am going for dentist because of anatomy. I have been doing research how to become a dentist, and it grosses me out knowing that I will have to do human anatomy. This is another reason why I want to change my major to pre pharmacy. For pharmacy, there is no need for anatomy. As I was saying, I will keep my major until I find some other reason or trouble for not become what I want to be. A good thing for majoring in biology pre-med is I can have variety of choices of career to choose from. I am pretty sure I will see myself in some kind of medical school in the future but not necessary dentistry school.

journey

Posted by Mychelle Williams on November 10, 2008

I came into college with the major of Psychology pre med. I knew I wanted to major in psychology when I took psychology in high school.  It was not about the grades I made, but the fulfillment that I gained from the class. I learned so much and it was not a forced learned, it was voluntary because the information was interesting. I felt like I had gained a new perspective on the world with every new topic. I loved that class. Of course, the instructor had a major part in my enjoyment. He made it so that we had no choice but to enjoy learning. He offered different ways for us to study like games and mnemonic devices.

I considered changing my major to just psychology so that I could be able to take more psychology classes in place of the required science courses. I do not really like chemistry and the second semester of chemistry is hard. No one likes organic chemistry and I have a sneaky suspicion that I will not either.

I definitely am not changing it. I need the premed for the Philadelphia school of Osteopathic medicine. I want to go there instead of Medical school so that I can be prepared to be a more holistic doctor. I want to treat a patient according to how it would affect their whole life. I want a relationship with my patients. The after I am prepared to do that. I want to be a psychiatrist, pediatrician, counselor or something of that sort.

Majors & Careers

Posted by Melita Smith on November 10, 2008

This year at school I started with the major biology pre-medical.  I decided to get into that major because I love the medical field.  To be more specific I love what surgeons do.  It fascinates me.   I love helping people.  Also I love giving other people joy and making them smile.  Because of these things I really want to be an OBGYN, or to put it in lame man’s terms, I want to deliver babies.  The amount of time that it takes to become a doctor caused me to seriously think if I really wanted to be in this field.  Also the fact that other peoples lives would be in my hands also made me think very hard on it.  There willbe a lot of stress with this job.  Also there will be a joy from it.  Making people have healthy babies is a gift.  I know for a fact that this job will keep me satisfied and happy.  Also I know that I will be fulfilled from this job.  I am happy with where I am.  I feel as if this is where I am supposed to be.  I do not plan on changing my major.  A lot of people change their major because they feel that it is too hard but I do not think that it has been so far.  Actually to me I am not that motivated to that well because I feel the material is not that challenging.  Hopefully next semester it will be.  So even though it might be easier in other majors such as business I do not think that I will change my major.

Majors

Posted by Brittany Stamps on November 10, 2008

My major preference was psychology in the begging of the school year. Since I spend most of my free time watching crime, law, and justice based television these topics get most of my attention. During my senior year in high school I researched many different fields of criminology, criminal psychology, forensic psychology, criminal justice, and criminal detective. When deciding on a particular field I knew I did not want to be on the law side of the table. I feel as though it is not my place to decide what is just or unjust for man and his crimes. As I was leaning toward the more active field, criminal detective, I started talking to officers and was turned off by the idea of “walking the beat” for a year or two in New Orleans. This is when I started to lean more towards the psychology of the art. Criminal psychology seems to be more of a therapeutical type of work versus forensic psychology. Weighing the two fields I found forensics would be more science which I found to be a turn off. That leaves me with my current choice, criminal psychology. The only thing I would consider changing my major to is psychology pre-med. I am ninety percent sure I am going to keep psychology as a major but I am not so sure I will want to do criminal psychology so I am considering psychology pre-med to keep my options open. I see myself being a criminal psychologist. I would like to do some type of work for the government or work with the NYPD.

Me && My Major

Posted by Courtney Williams on November 10, 2008

I started school with a chemistry/ pre-pharmacy major. I am still continuing with this major. For about as long as I can remember I always knew I wanted to do something in the health care field. I went back and forth between being a child psychologist to a registered nurse and then to a anesthesiologist. Then I finally decided to be a pharmacist. I worked at a Kroger for the past two years; we had a pharmacy and I go to know all of the pharmacist that worked in the store and I got more information from them. They really helped me to decide that this is the career for me. So far I have decided to stick with he major. It has become kinda discouraging because some of my friends with the same major have decided to change, but I’m sure that I will keep my major. If I were to change my major it would be to psychology/ pre-med, but I think it would be a better decision just to minor in psychology rather than major in it.

With my chosen major I plan to become pharmacist it a hospital. However, on the other hand since my major is chemistry if being a pharmacist doesn’t work out I have always thought about being a chemistry teacher. I have this crazy idea to do both. I want to work as a teacher during the week, but during the weekends I would like to work at a hospital as a pharmacist. I don’t know that might change, but thats really what I want to do. LOL.

majors and careers

Posted by Edward Hill,III on November 10, 2008

My major when I started my first semester here at Xavier University was accounting with a minor in finance. I choose to be an accounting major because I like managing money. With a degree in accounting, I can manage my family’s business. Being a certified accountant will benefit my family and I. Paying someone to do something I am interested in and enjoy doing wouldn’t be a smart decision. If a family member was to take care of the business, all information would be known without going through some other business that would charge outrageous prices to give information that is needed. Now I’m saving money and knowing what is going on if there is a problem I can fix it myself. Even though I’m just beginning the process to becoming an accountant, I feel like I’m comfortable with the decision I have made. I have no intentions on changing my major. At the beginning of the semester, I wanted to back to my first major psychology/ pre-pharmacy. I started thinking about when all the troops come back from Iraq they will need a lot of psychiatrist and therapist. This would be a good field to go into. I was always stuck on being an accountant since I was a freshman in high school. Later in life, I see myself as a personal accountant to a large number of people. I would like to start my on accounting firm in Atlanta or New York. The thought of moving that far to pursue my career has came across my mind but I have to do what it takes to provide for my bad spending habits when shopping. No one will give you anything in life; you have to work for it.

‘Major, My Major’

Posted by Angelia Sprott on November 9, 2008

Well since my ninth grade year in high school, my major has been the same, psychology. However, this was not always my first choice when it came to careers. When I was old enough to know what careers were, I wanted to be a lawyer. This changed because of my little brother. He had been having some problems in school so the counselor suggested to my mother, that she might want to take him to see a therapist. My brother really like going to see her, and said that she really helped him with whatever issues he was going through. That is what inspired me to study psychology in college. I wanted to see what the big deal was. When I began my first psychology class at Xavier, I was so ready to change my major, because I did not find it that interesting any more. I guess it just took me a while to warm up to the class, because now I really enjoy the class. I could see myself doing something in psychology as a career. I would most likely want to work with children, to try to help them with their issues. Because to me, most psychological issues start some where during childhood, so if we could find out what those issues are and help them with it before they become problems or disorders then the world would be a much better place. I hope that I can continue to like my chosen major and I would love to thrive in this field. I do not think that I will be changing my major. In addition, if I decide to, it would be anytime soon, because I am having fun with psychology for now.

majors ANd careers

Posted by Maryam Kanj on November 9, 2008

I chose Xavier university as my first option for a specific reason, and that’s because they specialize in the major I have chosen. The major that I chose was chemistry/pre-pharmacy this area is very popular and is hard to get in to. I decided to choose that major because I know that it is a good field that I would enjoy working in, a lot of people try to warn me that it will be a hard field but I was determined. College of pharmacy has a lot of opportunities and it is very interesting plus my cousin is a pharmacist and he says it’s a good field . Nothing has really caused me to reconsider becoming a pharmacist because its something that I have wanted to do and I know that I will succeed in but sometimes I feel like it will be really hard to get into the pharmacy program but then I think to myself that nothing is impossible especially if a person is determined like I am. I know that I will not change my major but I might add a minor even though my major does not require it. I think a minor might be something fun to do. My chosen major is pharmacy and this specific major has a lot of opportunities for example wherever you go you can find a job easily and make good money. I see myself becoming a very successful pharmacist. I know that I will have to work hard and study long hours but I’m willing to make the sacrifice. I see myself standing behind the counter trying my best to help people find the right medications for thier problem.

My Major & Career

Posted by Roseanna Desiree Jessup on November 9, 2008

When I got Xavier I had decided that I wanted to be a biology/premed major. Why? Simple really. It seemed like the most logical major to have if you want to be a doctor. Of course this is not true. You can be any major and get in to medical school to become a doctor. But now, i guess biology/premed would just be the EASIEST major to have to get into medical school. It is right on track for medical school. I didn’t really go through any kind of process to come to this conclusion. I knew I wanted to be in the medical field and that’s about it. I was filling out the application and I looked up and asked my mom what major you needed to be a doctor. She said biology/premed so that’s what I put.

I have considered changing my major, not too seriously though. It was when I got my first biology test grade backs. I was a bit discouraged. Biology seems to be the class that I’m having the most trouble with and that’s not good because that’s my major. I thought about it but then I thought about what I could possibly change my major to…  nothing. I think I am exactly where I need to be. I doubt I’ll change my major.

Even though I know I want to be in the medical field, I’m still undecided about my career. I am considering a number of careers. Honestly, the thought of being a doctor kind of scares me because I’m so afraid of  making a mistake and hurting someone… or worse. I thought about being a gynecologist or an anesthesiologist. I’m not sure though.

Majors & Careers

Posted by Jamaan Kenner on November 9, 2008

I started here as, and still am, a Biology Pre-med major.  I have been wanting to be a doctor for the majority of my life and I started to like biology after my freshman year.  Now, that I have actually thought about the process to becoming a doctor, I am not sure if I want to go to medical school.  I’m sick of school, so I’m not really sure of what I’m going to do.  I probably will suck it up and just stick with it since it will pay off in the end.  If I do change my major, it will be to chemistry pre-med, biology, or chemistry pre-pharmacy.  I don’t know why, but since I’ve been at Xavier, I’m beginning to like chemistry more than biology; so changing to chemistry pre-med is a definite possibility.  If I continue with the biology pre-med major, I will specify in sports medicine and try to be the team doctor for a professional sports team.  If I change to pre-pharm, then I would of course go to pharmacy school and be a pharmacist.  If I dropped the pre-med and go with the biology major, I would go into the biotechnology field.  If I went to the chemistry pre-med major, I’m not sure what I could get a job doing other than being a chemist.  I need to research the different jobs that I could get with each of these majors and go from there.  I think that if I become more familiar with all of the job opportunites then deciding what to do with my major would be easier.

Majors & Careers

Posted by Corneisha McCorkle on November 9, 2008

I entered Xavier University as a Biology-Premed major this fall. Honestly, the main reason behind my decision to become a Biology major is I was always told that’s what you were suppose to major in if you wanted to become a doctor. Everyone around me kept saying that Biology would be the major I would need in order to be admitted into medical school. For the longest I didn’t know that you could get into medical school without having majored in a science. I personally don’t think my reasons are that great, but I have yet to consider changing my major. I also seriously doubt that I will change my major in the future. I’m not ruling it out completely, but at this point in my life I’m comfortable with my the path I’ve chosen. Luckily for me I actually find Biology interesting.

With my chosen major, my long term goal is to attend medical school. My next long term goal is to embark on a career as a medical doctor, preferbly practicing in New Orleans. If medicine doesn’t work out or if I decide one day that its just not for me I may do research or work in a lab. I may even chose teaching as my career. I think it would be pretty awesome if I could come back and teach at Xavier one day. At least then I would have a decent place to park on campus. That is all I have come up with so far, but I know I need to do more research. I know that everyone doesn’t get into medical school. Don’t get me wrong, I will try my hardest. If I still don’t get in, then I need to have a back up plan.

Majors & Careers

The major that I started Xavier with is Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy.  I’ve always knew that I would attend Xavier University, and by them having the College of Pharmacy I really knew that I was going.  The reason why I chose Chemistry Pre-pharmacy as a major is because I want to become a Pharmacist.  I’am a type of person that likes to help people and with this career I would be helping plenty of people in the need of medication.  I also chose this major because it only consist of 6 years in school.  Don’t get me wrong I would do whatever it takes to accomplish my goals but I don’t want to take 15 years doing it.  And I also like that fact that you go right to the work force after College of Pharmacy.  But my main goal is to give back to the community and help the people thats in need of help.  Well, as of now Iam sticking with Pre-Pharmacy, but I have been having some doubts about my major.  I guess its because of the work and some of it is really overwhelming ;but its college so what can you expect.  But if I were to reconsider my field I would probably major in biology and minor in accounting.  Its just something that I’ve been thinking about, but like I said I’am sticking with Pre-Pharm.  And if I were to go through with this, my family would be so proud of me, so I’am doing this for both my family and my future because we all are looking forward for be to become a Pharmacist.

My Major and Career

Posted by Cherise Steib on November 9, 2008

I started school with the chemistry pre-pharmacy major and I don’t plan on changing my major at any time. All of my life I’ve loved science and I knew that my career would involve it someway somehow. For some strange reason, I was always excited to be in a science class. While in high school, I competed in the science fair every year and in my junior year I went on to compete on the international level in Albuquerque, NM. I won numerous awards that opened the doors to many opportunities. The science project that led me to internationals was actually intensive research that was published in a scientific journal. The research was entitled “Remediation of Mercury Contaminated Waterways Using Crawfish Shells.” That research was confirmation that my career would be science oriented.

Before I decided to come to Xavier, I wanted to be a chemistry pre-med major, but soon I realized that I didn’t really want to be a pediatrician. I decided not to be a pediatrician because I don’t think that I could stand to see sick kids all of the time. So I figured that the closest thing to medicine would be pharmacy. I love the whole idea of working with medicine and having people consult me for assistant with medicine. I plan on attending Xavier’s College of Pharmacy in 2010. I will be there for 4 years learning everything I need to know to become a great pharmacist. I hope to establish a career in a big city working in retail such as CVS, Walgreens, or Wal-Mart.

When I started at Xavier University, I knew that I wanted to go to medical school to become a doctor. With that in mind I made my major Biology Pre-Med. Though I knew you don’t necessarily have to be a biology major to go to medical school, I figured it would help me more. In high school, I didn’t really like biology but I felt like it was something I had to learn. After almost finishing the semester, Biology is not so bad. I also knew that most of Xavier’s pre-med students that get accepted into medical school are biology majors.

Although I know I could get a degree in biology there are a few things that are causing me to reconsider. For one, I know that I am going to try my hardest to get into medical school and succeed, but if I don’t, I want to be able to do something with my degree. The jobs in biology are limited to research and teaching.
Though i wouldn’t mind teaching, I don’t think I would want to teach biology. I have been thinking alot about becoming a psychology pre-med major. I know that with a degree in psychology that I could go to graduate school, start my own practice as a child psychologist, work in the school system, or even a corporation as a psychologist.

I’ve talked my logic over with my adviser and I’m going to take a semester of psychology before I actually change it. No matter which major I choose my ultimate goal is to attend medical school and fulfill my dream of becoming a Neonatologist.

Majors & Careers

When I first began to apply to college my major started was Computer Science because I really enjoy working with computers. Ever since I was a little kid I can always remember getting computer games for Christmas and I used to think they were the best presents ever. I would stay up all night trying to beat the game. Sometimes it would take me a day and other times I might take me up to a whole week. I still enjoy working with computers but I decided to change my major to Chemistry/Pre-pharmacy because I figured that I would have more options in this field. My mother also had something to do with me changing my mind. She also works in the medical field and she has always wanted me to follow in her foot steps. Since I do not exactly enjoy working in the same field as her I figured this compromise worked out best for the both of us. Another reason I decided to change my major was because I found out that Xavier had such a good Pharmacy college. So far I enjoy my chemistry classes and I hope I made the right decision and if not there is still time for me to change my mind again. After college I hope to find a career where I can travel and still be a Pharmacist. I’m sure there is a career out there that fits this description I just have to do some research; if not then I guess I will just have to create it!

The major that I have started school with is Biology Pre-Med.  When I was a child, I have always wanted to do something in the medical field. What exactly I did not know at the time, but as I grew older, an became wiser, I began to research and compare my interests. As a result, I found the career in Pediatrics to be the most compatible.  I have always enjoyed working with children and learning about the sciences such as Biology.  No, I do not feel that anything yet has caused me to reconsider my major.  Granted it will become more challenging as time goes on but I feel that I can handle it.  As for now, I will not change my major but there is always a slight possibility that I could change my major.  I am a freshman and I ‘m learning new things each and everyday.  With that said, I may discover another field of study that I enjoy just as much as biology or maybe even more.  I am always open to new ideas, but as for now, Biology Pre- Med is the one for me.  I see myself being a great asset to the community, by spreading joy and good health to those families who have ill children. In future years to come, I see myself being a successful Pediatrician running my own practice in Atlanta, Georgia or in New Jersey.  The only way this will come to pass is through faith, hard work, dedication, and determination.

majors and careers

Like most of the 800 something freshmen that entered this university, I entered this school as a biology/premed major. It wasn’t really so much that I knew I wanted to be a bio/premed major, but more-so I knew what I wanted my career to be. I always knew that I wanted to be a physician of some sort. I love to do hands-on activities, I love to do challenging things, and I always like to help people if they need it. It wasn’t until my sophomore year in high school that I decided that I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. This field for some reason just intrigued and interested me so, that’s what goal I’m reaching for right now.

There were a couple of things that made me think about changing my major. For example all of the super hard science classes are always a mind-changer at one time or another. One event that sticks out and really made me think about my career choice is one time at lunch I was talking to a guy in the school of pharmacy. He was saying things like “If you’re a pharmacist, you can go straight to work and straight to the big money” or “At 24 I’ll be flashing my cash rolling in my BMW”. All of this talk was really tempting, and I was really considering changing my major but then I thought to myself; that’s not me. I have never really been the type of person to go chasing after fast-cash let alone money period. I just try and work for what I want even if it takes a while. In realizing this, I decided to stick to my intended major.

The career I have chosen in this major, as i mentioned before, is anesthesiology. Hopefully, by the grace of God, I will succeed in my journey to this goal.

I came to Xavier because I want to be a doctor. As a biology remed major, I plan on cutting people up and putting them back together for  living. In other words, I want to do plastic surgery. I don’t know exactly why I find such interest in repairing physical attributes of the human body. I’ve always wanted to be a surgeon. Plastic surgery just became my main focus. Even about this, I am not positive because I also like the possibility of becoming an oncologist. So, as of right now, I am stuck between plastic surgery and focusing on the field of oncology. As I continue in school, I will determine which one I am most interested in, or that I don’t want to do either one. But only time will tell. I believe that here at Xavier I will learn what becoming a doctor is really about. I won’t be surprised when I get to medical school because my instructors will already have prepared me and given me the means necessary to prepare myself.

Right now I can’t see myself changing my major. My best subject is english, but I don’t want to be an english major. I don’t think I would enjoy teaching english even though I love reading and analyzing literature. And the funny thing is, I’ve always been good at English but I’ve only been average at science. Obvioulsy I have to do better, but science seems to be where my heart is. Biology, the way the body functions internally and with the outside environment, is so intriguing to me for some strange reason. It’s just interesting the way that the body knows how to function. There is so much detail and responsibility play into the efficiency of bodily function. I think I will be a biology pre-med jor until I graduate. I cn’t see myself changing to anything else.

majors and careers

The major I chose is chemisty pre-pharmacy.  Big surprise huh?  Anyway, I actually wanted to do something with computer engineering, but some twist of fate made me end up at Xavier.  I talked with my cousins one day, and they told me they were going to college with a pharmacy major.  I decided to send my ACT scores to Xavier to see what would happen.  A couple weeks later, I get accepted and some scholarship money.  It just happens to be that I also like science and math, so my decision was made. Also, my parents have bugged me for the longest time to become a doctor.  I didn’t want to go to school for the length of time for that degree, so pharmacy would do for me and to please them.

Changing my major?  That is something I can’t answer right now.  Sure, I’ve heard that the average college student would change majors at least once, but that just has to do with classes and opinion. So far though, I can’t complain about classes.  As a freshman, I’m only taking general classes right now.  Once I start taking more specialized classes, I can then make a decision if this is right for me or not.  All I can say right now is that only time will tell.

If I do decide to go through with pharmacy, I see myself in a lab making medicine or having my own practice.  I plan on working behind the counter only when I am an intern or something.  If you do something, you gotta make the best out of it.

Major & Careers

Posted by NeNe Lewis on November 9, 2008

The major I started this school with is biology pre- med. I picked this major because every since I was a baby I wanted to become a veterinarian. Helping animals is what I have always wanted to do. It’s really the only thing I want to do. I have an unbreakable bond with animals. My love for animals will never change. Every since I could remember I was never afraid of any animals. I always have wanted to be the one that animals are brought to when they need to be helped. My passion for animals is something none of my family and friends understand. The only two people who do is my father, who is not in my life and my best friend. My best friend understands because we had a fight about one of my dogs. He called my dog out of her name so had a serious fist fight. He do know now not to play with my emotions, my pets really any animals, and my money. I have thought about changing my major because of my grade in my biology class but i decided to just stick it out. I’m trying my hardest to improve because I want to become a vet more than anything in the world. I feel as though if I don’t fulfil my dream I not only let myself and my family I really let all the animals in the world down. I will never change my major no matter what may happen. I would take the same class fifteen times if I have to. I really hope I don’t.

~Majors & Careers~

Posted by Kia Wilson on November 9, 2008

When I first started school, I didn’t want to be like my friends and major in biology pre-med, just because I didn’t think it was for me. So I enrolled at Xavier as a Chemistry Pre-Medicine major. Throughout high school I always loved science and math, so I knew that one would end up being wat I planned on studying. I wouldn’t say I had the best chemistry teacher while in high school, but she showed me that I could appreciate it more that biology. So therefore I had no doubt that I would major in chemistry.

Chemistry is a hard major just like all the others, but as of now I am willing to study hard and do my best. I am not thinking about changing my major right now, because I am just getting into the flow of things. However, if I do plan on changing my major down the line I think I would want to do something in education or accounting. Life is full of obstacles and I am ready to face some of them and see what comes out of it. You never know just what might happen next so always expect challenges: is the way I look at life.

As of now with the career that I plan on following I wish to become a pediatrician. I work well with children and I just want to be able to help those in need. While working my way up to my career I would love to do some research and get as much outside education and knowledge as possible. I do want to be doctor at some point in my life and I plan on going as far as I possible can to get the most information I would need.

Majors and Careers

Posted by Morgan Weber on November 9, 2008

The major I started with at Xavier University is cchemistry, Pre-med, and I declaired chemistry as my major because I want to become a pediatrician or go into research.  I could have majored in biology, but to me one can do more with a chemistry degree than a biology degree.  Plus, my chemistry teacher in high school made chemistry come alive.  For example, we celebrated mole(a unit) day with food, labs and songs.  Therefore, chemistry really seemed like a good choice for me.  In addition, Just in case I do change my mind about becoming a doctor, I wanted to make sure I had a degree that will be useful or can support me in the future.

I have considered changing my major to biology because I heard it was easier than chemistry, but I will stick with chemistry since I have yet to take my first biology course.  As a result, I am not positive that I like chemistry more than biology.  Time will tell.  Also, I have thought about switching my major to anthropology or archaeology because I am interested in ancient civilizations and people.  However, I would have to go to another college or university since Xavier does not offer either majors.

With my major I see myself going on to graduate school.  It will either be to do research or to become a doctor.  However, I am bit unsure where school will lead me because there are so many options, so until I make my decision I plan on attending summer programs and working in at least one doctor’s office.

Making History

Posted by Joi Martin on November 9, 2008

I began college majoring in Biology Pre-Med and plan to keep that major until I graduate.  Changing my major is simply not an option for me.  I have put in too much time and effort to even consider entering a different field of study.  However, I must admit that taking difficult classes, handling the workload, and realizing that is only the beginning is a little challenging.  In addition, many of the upperclassmen were once bio pre-med majors as well but somewhere they lost hope and changed their major.  I do not want the negativity of others to influence my decisions and I pray that no one or nothing will ever discourage me from achieving my dreams.  I do realize responsibilities and expectations from others are steadily increasing while I acquire newfound knowledge and essential life skills.  With this in mind, I should strive to do my best and always put forth my greatest work.

Ever since I was in the seventh grade, becoming a doctor was definitely my goal.  It seems as if it was so many years ago and being a doctor was impossible.  Many of us were just looking for a career we thought may be cool to say if anyone ever asked what we wanted to be when we grow up.  However, I never doubted that I would be anything else.  Being a physician would mean a lot to my family and friends.  Many of them are cheering me on and their support goes along way.  In about ten years, I will be the first physician in my family and I will be proud to hold such as honor.

career

Posted by Phuong Dao on November 9, 2008

Initially when I started school I decided on doing pre med biology. Growing up the neighborhood I did and doing the job I do, I see alot of people having bad experiences with hospitals and the doctors. I’ve heard a few stories on how some doctors perform their job very poorly and thus cause the patient to suffer from their mistakes. My other influence to become a doctor was my friend and family. My mother would frequently get sick but could never afford the money to see a doctor. The biggest influence to my career is one of my very close friend, Tony. I never knew how much like threaten asthma can be to a person, until my friend past away from it. I always thought as long as you had you inhaler with the medicine, asthma will get better. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. When I found out how he died and how the medics tried to revive him, I knew I wanted to become a doctor so that other close families and friends wouldn’t have to lose someone important to them. I don’t know if those medics did the best they can, or the most of what they could have done. This what makes me strive hard to become a doctor. I know that I wouldn’t be able to save everybody but my goal is to try with everything I have to do what I can. At first, I was intimidated by college and how I didn’t make an A in everything I got but every time I want to give up I always think of Tony.

The major I started off school with is Biology Pre Med. Ive decided to major in this feild because I always had an interest for it. This feild does offer alot of money which is why I am interested in medicine but always because it seems so fun. It does require a long time of study and a long time of school but at the end it ulitmately pays off when you can buy a million dollar house for you and your family. Well ever since I was little people always talk about being rich when they grow up, being a doctor, a lawyer, a CEO of a major industry, a dentist, and etc. So by becoming rich why not be a doctor and I want to become a pediatrician so the kids can make work go by faster. I think kids are funny and somehow if not meaning too always make you smile. IF anything would cause me to reconsider my major it would have to be the lengthy years of study which I think adds up to 12 years before I can start my own practice. 12 years is a long time but to me it is worth it. I strongly doubt I would ever change my major, im devoted. =)  As earning this degree  and starting my own practice I hope that me and my cousins can all work together in our own business and be the wealthy cousins of the family. We all are interested in medicine and also my brother and my cousins. Medicine is the best feild in my opinion. =))

Majors and Careers

Posted by Marshall Collins on November 9, 2008

Out of all the majors to choose from when I started Xavier, I was given the choice between chemistry and biology. I Choose biology because I have always done better in biology versus chemistry. Another reason was that at the time I found biology very interesting at the time. And I felt that for what I wanted to do in life, it was the best choice for my major. But lately the thought of changing my major has crossed my mind alot. Mainly because I originally wanted to major in history but I was told that even though I liked the field of study, it would be in my best interest to major in a science if I planned on getting into dental school. Even though I still want to major in history, at this point I would be slightly behind and it may harm my chances of getting into dental school. So with the biology degree I am looking to recieve, I plan on entering dental school where the first two years deal with alot of biology and chemistry. Then use what I have learned to have a better understanding of the human body, the mouth in particular. So yeah in about seven years when I have my degee in biology and my license to practice, you can come over to my practice and I will show you how a biology degree qualifies me to pull and fill your teeth. Serioulsy because I will have learned the anatomy of the human mouth and therefore can pull without seriously hurting you because of my knowledge of my minor, chemistry.

Jasmine Grant:Majors and Careers

Posted by Jasmine Grant on November 9, 2008

I started school with the major of chemistry pre-pharm.I can to that decision because my favorite two subjects in high school were chemisrty and math.Looking at the requirements there was a lot of chemistry and in chemistry there is a lot of math.I figured that I would be able to practice the sujects I love while doing something productive.I also like the pay of a pharmacist and you do not have to be in school as long as most doctors.Nothing has caused me to want to reconsider my major becasue there is really nothing else that I really want to do.I have considered having a minor in accounting but I decided that I wouldn’t have enough time to manage chemisrty pre-pharm,basketball,and a minor in accounting.I do not think that i will change majors.I am happy with the major I have choosen. It is a bit of a challenge but it will be all worth it.I like everything about my major.I like the starting pay,the places I am able to choose from to work at,and I like the fact that I do not have to be in school forever.I see myself becoming a pharmacist.I have been thinking about becoming a pharmasict in the airforce. They pay good and they have good beifits. The bracches of military always need medicine so I figured no better place to start my career.I do not where I would like to live to start my career but I know it will not be in New Orleans Louisiana.I havent really grown to like this city too much i guess because I havent had time to actually go out and see it.
